McKenzie's Chicken In A Box

While in the area I decided to call in an order so that I could avoid a super long wait. They told me it would ready in 15 minutes. It was exactly that 15 minutes. It wasn't a long line like I usually see, causing me to abandon ship. The chicken and fries were hot, fresh, and delicious. It hit the spot.

Went to Sherwin-Williams to buy some paint, and I was reminded that I had read an article that this place was still operating. So, I decided to drop in, and I'm always down for some fried chicken. I thought I was winning because they had a special that day, 8-pc dark for $8.62. I also ordered the sweet potato fries and sweet potato casserole. The chicken was ok. It was a little dry, which was weird, because it's hard to overcook thighs. They're like the fattiest part of the chicken. The sweet potato fries had no flavor and were limp. They need to switch to the Tropic Island brand sold at Costco. And the sweet potato casserole was a disappointment. The pecans were brown, had no flavor, and weren't fresh. The casserole itself was ok after I added some butter, sugar and cinnamon, but I couldn't get over the pecans, and threw it away. Service was good. The people are rather pleasant and easy to work with. Ambience is lacking, though. I appreciate nostalgia, such as the newspaper ads from the 80's, but the plastic containers in the display cases when you first walk in need to go. It's time.

So let me preface this by saying, I'm a huge proponent for supporting BOB's (Black Owned Businesses); however, my disappointment was not necessarily with the food rather with the filthiness of this establishment. As a first timer inside here, I was mortified with the amount of filth in here. I mean come on. This is a food eatery and the ambiance reminds me of the Addams Family house. Dust, cobwebs, mildew and dirt everywhere, dead roaches on the grime ridden floor. Floors appeared un-swept and un-mopped for weeks....yet people were coming in here buying food in droves like they don't see how dirty this place is. The only reason I didn't leave, I made a preorder the day before for an 11am pickup. My friend's mom's funeral was that day and I was purchasing 100 wings for the repast. Now I will say the chicken and fries were decent but for me, I can't understand how these employees can walk past all this filth and cook food in that kitchen. This is a tell tell sign of how folks live at home. There is absolutely no way a half decent clean person can stand to work in this type of environment. Y'all need to close shop and perform a weekend deep cleaning of this place. You can represent us better. SMH.

I stop here every few years to get a box of chicken. I recently stopped and it has the same consistency: hot, fresh, crunchy. I usually like the chicken meat to have seasoning as well but McKenzie's manages to still serve quality chicken. The skin definitely makes up for the lack of seasoning on the meat. It's a flavorful, crunchy crust. The chicken definitely has "country-cooking" or "old time" vibes lol. The fried okra are also top tier. It's a mandatory side. Whatever they fry them in is the perfect match.I've never had an issue with customer service. Parking might be a little sketchy but, other than that, give them a try!

Good afternoon I writing this post cause I'm so disappointed. On Friday 09/20/24 went into chicken in the box the chicken refried and dark dry out. I was coming from doctor's office and thought I would pick up some chicken come home relax and enjoy. Didn't happen could not eat the chicken was to hard and dry out gave to my neighbors dog so pissed off 19.00 dollars for 10 pieces. Whom ever the new manager is please go back to what use to work giving customers this want work. SORRY YOU LOST A LONG TIME CUSTOMER.

Best fried chicken in town! My parents grew up in Gentilly eating this chicken and I work across the street and can validate is still just as good as it was 40 years ago

Some of the best damn chicken I've had in a while! Fried okra was cooked perfectly as well!

The food here is always great and the service is always A1. My only suggestion would be that there be a deep clean of the from part of the building. I know nothing is done there but there's a stale smell that isn't the best while trying to get to the smell of the food cooking in the back.

Local joint I saw and just had to try, glad I went inside, seems like a local favorite, I got a simple meal but it was pretty good! My mom loved the boudin balls. Fried chicken was on point!
