Food Truck Time: Morfa Empanadas at Cary's Downtown Chowdown Not impressed with the empanadas from this food truck. Ordered two empanadas for $7.50, decided to give the Spicy Beef and Corn & Cheese a shot. I liked the baked pastry; however, I was not a fan of the filling in either empanada. Not my first choice for empanadas from a food truck.

I'll be honest, based on the pictures I didn't expect these to be so good. They look like they would be thick pastry with just a little filling, but I found them to be perfectly proportioned with the pastry lighter than I expected. Crispy, almost cracker-like, which didn't overpower the thick fillings at all. Love that they are baked not fried, so not greasy at all!The chicken one was very Southern, with a bbq flavor. Salsas didn't go with that, but it was good on its own. Spicy beef wasn't spicy, but very tasty. The spinach and cheese was probably my favorite, but I'm a huge spinach fan. Both the beef and the spinach ones went beautifully with both of their salsas. They have small cups for the salsas, but a little goes a long way as they are packed with flavor. One is very spicy...we liked mixing them.Husband & I shared all three and they made for a nice light lunch. Kudos also for the 100% sanitation rating.

I attended the 2nd annual empanada competition in Durham Central Park. I did not have the appetite to try the other food trucks, but I selected this one because it seemed the most affordable. The service is quick. Two spicy beef empanadas cost $7.50. I also had a $1 soda. This empanada is baked and not fried! So, it did taste healthier and crust a bit dry and flavorless. The filling was flavorful but lack heat. Overall, the service and costs are reasonable, particularly when compared to other food truck empanada vendors, but their empanadas might be tastier if they added some chile to the ground beef and also made the crust more tasty.

First time to Morfa's & won't be my last!I got the BBQ chicken empanada, Spicy Beef and Dulche de Leche dessert one.Chicken- it was definitely a tangy/vinegar BBQ sauce, not the ketchup/brown sugar sweet one I'm used to, but it was still tasty and shredded well.Spicy beef- I'm actually not normally a ground beef fan but since this one was so popular I decided to try it. It had great flavor with that kick of spice they speak of- you'll probably need some tissues.Dulche de Leche- good. Once you break it open, not the most appealing, but the flavors are good and the whipped cream makes it! You will need a fork with this one.

Empanadas seem like the perfect street food. They're easy to hold, eat on the run, or carry without making a mess -- at least until you bite into one. When I came across this food truck, I wasn't quite sure if I was in an empanada frame of mind, as there were a couple of other food options nearby. After looking at the menu, it suddenly became easy.I picked the corn and cheese empanada although the spinach and cheese was a close second. (In hindsight, I should have asked for one of each.) Made with both white and yellow corn, some onion, and a mix of mozzarella and provolone cheeses, the filling was delicious. It was thick but not heavy. The corn was firm, not mushy, adding just enough sweetness to the cheese. The shell was thin and the edges were crimped and crispy without being dried out. I was sad to see the first empanada disappear on several levels. It was much better than the second. The filling in the second was slightly watery and thinner. It was still good, but just didn't have the same taste impact. The hot sauce was good; the mild sauce was okay, very mild, and didn't add anything flavor-wise.Each empanada is stamped with the kind of filling it has, a nice touch if you pick up several different kinds. And they're ready quickly. The menu is basic, with four empanada choices, but that's probably just enough to keep the service speedy.

I enjoyed this truck more than I thought. I like baked empanadas as a slightly lower calorie compared to fried ones. I ordered 2 spicy beef and 1 corn and cheese. They came out super fast so that was good and the prices were reasonable. The spicy beef empanadas were pretty tasty. I liked the peppers and olives in them. They also went really well with the spicy jalapeno sauce. The corn and cheese empanada was interesting. It was kind of sweet and very cheesy. I'm not sure I cared for the mozzarella cheese. I definitely liked the beef more. The prices were decent I think I'll just get 2 next time.

I was annoyed that my food took forever to be done but i must say, the food was excellent and hot. I ended up ordering more food after we tasted their empanadas. We tried the spicy beef, bbq chicken and corn/cheese and all 3 were great! Even the kids loved it and they're usually very picky. The fries were also good and hot. (i usually take food pics but we were so hungry and food was good that it was gone pretty fast).

This was my first time trying Morfa Empanadas and they do not disappoint! Being Puerto Rican I am used to fried empanadas but these were baked and are excellent. I had the Spicy Beef and on the spicy scale of 1-10, I would give them a 6.
