I've been going here since I was a little girl. It's always my family's go-to restaurant when in Raleigh. Their food is delicious- especially their pupusas and carne asada. Last time we were there, my husband got a seafood soup and it was amazing as well. Staff are friendly but their music is played through YouTube on a TV and it has ads and it will suddenly be silent because it needs them to click on "continue watching."

Horrible customer service! I went in to get some salad and cheese to go with my Pupusas that my housekeeper made. They wanted to charge me $38 for those two things which is really ridiculous. So I went down the street to a food truck that sells pupusa's (RIVERA'S PUPUSAS Y MAS!)and I asked them and they gave them to me for free and wanted me to try their Pupusas. Let me tell you it was really really good!!! Better than a regular restaurant. So I will be going to that food truck when I want pupusa's and that's very often. As for the restaurant I was very nice and the manager or that person that's in charge would not come up front to talk to me. He probably knew he was taking advantage of me by charging so much. He was a coward and wouldn't even come out and talk to me. Save your money and go to Riviera's Pupusas Y Mas food truck. Their customer service is much better, food is authentic and probably one of the best pupusa's I've ever eaten, and their prices are awesome!

We had friends who raved about this place so we did take out with them the other night. We ordered the carne Asada tacos, as well as the chicken tacos and 2 of the Papusas (one chicken and one beans and cheese). We also ordered the chips and Queso.Everything was very good - I could use a few less onions but that's a personal taste thing. The pickled salad stuff they give you to put on top is amazing. I was a little nervous it might be spicy based on my low tolerance but it wasn't it was just perfect. We did have some issue with communication but they brought an English speaker out to assist us getting the order straight. Definitely worth going back.

The food here is great. Packed with flavor and layered. I feel the need to reiterate that this is NOT Mexican food. Whilst there is some similarity, going to this restaurant with an expectation of Mexican food isn't a good idea. We ordered a lot of food to try lots of variety:Pupusas stuffed with cheese and pork- served with a type of slaw these are awesome. Some of the best pupusas I've ever had. Mariscada- a seafood soup in a broth with coconut in it. It was amazing. With octopus, shrimp, fish, and a lobster tail. Costilla de Res (beef ribs)- packed with flavor. These were served with shrimp, salad, rice, refried beans, and tortillas (much thicker than Mexican style ones). Generous portionCombo Quesadilla- the best quesadilla I can recall having. With beef and chicken. The meat was marinaded. Served with guacamole, flavored sour cream (so good), and pico de gallo (but the real thing)Flautas- though this is not a traditional Salvadorean dish it was still super tasty, Prepared mostly how one would expect. The only heads up I would give is that I have not ever been there and had an English speaking waitress. That is not to say that they don't have any, I just haven't been served by one. My husband is fine with having myself or my mom assist him in asking questions or ordering but left on his own may have some difficulty. Ordering would be no issue but asking questions about dishes or the menu would be. Just a potential FYI to any non-Spanish speakers out there.

Originally, I planned to visit a bakery during the early afternoon hours. Since it would also be close to lunchtime, I could justify having lunch first! Ahhh, rationalization. I took a last minute glance at Yelp to find nearby places and scrolled a list of Chinese, Italian, Vietnamese, burgers, KFC, etc...no. The name Mar y Sol stood out but there was no information. I discovered it serves Salvadorian and Mexican food. Having enjoyed Salvadorian food in the past, this decision became very easy. They're located in, of course, a strip mall with businesses targeted towards the Latin population. Even though I arrived after lunch hour, the restaurant still had a few patrons. I walked in and the waitress greeted me.The World cup games were on the two large flat screen TVs (clearly audible but not intrusively loud), A hodgepodge of Salvadorian and Mexican décor, combined with a hunting lodge theme, generic landscape paintings, and red checkerboard tablecloths completed the look. These were positive signals that I might be in for some authentic food.I was here for the soup and went directly to the large menu's soup section. There it was, the magic word: Mondongo. The waitress returned with a basket of chips with salsa and was surprised to learn I was ready to order. With the soup, I asked for maracuya (passion fruit juice). My juice arrived along with warm Salvadorian style tortillas meant to accompany the soup. I was very pleased with the soup's presentation and aroma plus it was piping hot. I have not had Mondongo prepared Salvadorian style. It was topped with fresh chopped cilantro, had several large strips of cabbage, and a small piece of yellow corn. The broth was a brick red color with a consistency that coated the spoon. I tasted the broth first and my mouth was filled with a lot of information: tomatoes, chilies, onion, cilantro, garlic, salt and I'm sure much more. It was slightly spicy but I'm a coward when it comes to the Scoville scale. You do know Mondongo is tripe soup? I stirred the soup to reveal the real treasures: chunks of yucca ( cassava ) large pieces of beef bones, and tender pieces of flavorful beef tripe. It only gets tender and flavorful from hours of cooking. The more soup I had, the more the flavors came forth and I discovered that the spiciness was now rather enjoyable.I forgot to squeeze the fresh lime into the soup but did eat the tortillas. I could best describe these as soft, warm, unleavened cornbread and were perfect to sop up some of the broth. I observed the food other diners received. The portions were generous and looked enticing. They serve Salvadorian appetizers, seafood, grilled steaks, chicken, quail, Tex Mex and Mexican food. I might mention that the service was very good. For $10 with tax, I had a purely serendipitous and most enjoyable lunch.

I love papusas and Mar y Sol has marvelous papusas! The curtido that is served with them is a gorgeous acidic counterpoint to the richness of the crisp papusas, and they're ridiculously low priced. Honestly, I've only had a few other things at Mar y Sol and they were all good, but if they only had the papusas, I would keep going back.I don't speak much Spanish and that is occasionally a minor issue when ordering, but the waitstaff is patient with me. I am generally excited when I'm the only English speaker at a Latin American restaurant - those tend to be the most worth going to and I'm willing to put up with my occasionally awkward communications with the staff at Mar y Sol if it means a big pile of delicious, cheap papusas!
