The last few years have not been kind to the Taiwanese food scene in the Houston area, as the decline has been felt across the city and surrounding suburbs. Mama Wu's is among the few Taiwanese owned and operated shops in the area and is stationed in the restaurant stalls within JusGo Supermarket. They specialize in meat over rice combos and a small number of Taiwanese style pastries, which are two things I haven't really seen anywhere else in the area.(#1) It's all so simple, yet unique at the same time. Best of all, everything is stellar and they are incredibly deserving of their success thus far.Pork chop over rice (排骨飯), one of the island's most classic dishes, is outstanding here. Other dishes, such as their chicken fillet (雞排) fish fillet (魚排), braised pork belly, and even boneless pork chop is downright delicious and pairs so well with the cabbage and rice. Throw in a side of their Taiwanese sausage (台灣香腸) and even one of their pastries (mung bean + meat is my fave) and it'll be a wonderful meal. While speaking Chinese is not a requirement, knowing any Mandarin will make things easier. Cash is encouraged, however, credit card is also doable. There isn't a lot of seating, but the vibe is as homey as can be. I feel the future is bright for them and the Houston food scene only gets better with them in it. ____________(#1) Yes, really.

Such a good place to buy bento boxes to go. We buy a couple on the weekends when we don't feel like cooking. The Taiwanese sausage is so good. It's not dry at all. The pickled cucumbers in the bento box add a nice vinegar crunch without being too sweet like some places. The prices are still affordable for the amount of food. We usually have enough for leftovers where I take it to work the next day for lunch.

Everyone has their favorite comfort food. You naturally seek it whenever you feel like eating something that warms your soul and makes you feel at home. I have that craving on Sunday, so we head out Jusgo Supermarket in Sugar Land to have some Rice Platter at a highly reviewed Taiwanese Fast Food spot. The food court at Jusgo Supermarket in Sugar Land has become a favorite place to eat for me. I have been to Joy's Dim Sum 3 times now, and every time it's excellent. I'm feeling pretty confident in trying out this place that specialized in Taiwanese food. One of the reviews recommends that you order the Braised Chicken Leg whenever it's available, and I was still too late, it sold out right before my order. So I settled for their second most popular item, "Railroad Bento" 鐵路便當, which consists of a piece of Fried Soy Braised Pork Chop, one Braised Egg, slices of Taiwanese Sausage, Pickled Mustard Greens and Cucumber, Stir-fried Cabbage, on a bed of perfectly cooked White Rice. I believe Railroad Bento originated from Japan, where each train station has vendors who sell their specialty in a conveniently packed bento box for commuters on the go. Taiwanese culture is heavily influenced by Japan, some elderly Taiwanese even speak Japanese due to the occupation of Taiwan for about 50 years. The Railroad Bento at Mama Wu's Kitchen delivers the comfort that I was seeking and more. The whole Bento tastes delicious and fulfilling. We also order the Grilled Sausage which is a must, porky with a bit of sweetness, goes well with the White Rice from the Bento. We also get an Egg Yolk Pastries, which has sweet Red Bean stuffing with a Salted Egg Yolk in the middle, a nice dessert to finish up the meal. This kind of comfort food is just what I crave sometimes, not too fussy or fancy, but hits the spot and soothes my soul. I'm looking forward to going back and trying their other dishes. I understand now why Mama Wu's Kitchen is so well-loved in the community because the place delivers a piece of Taiwan to Houston.

TLDR: Mama Wu, keep doing you! Legit Chinatown quality/prices in Sugar Land. A def hidden gem. Visit: Weekday (lunch)Order:Rice w/ Soy Braised Pork ChopAdded Grilled Taiwanese Sausage - 8.3/10A STRONG showing at this little spot in the Jusgo shopping center. The pork chop was fresh out of the fryer (I'm talking about still bubbling lol) and it was absolutely solid. A great subtle soy braised flavor permeated the chop and the accompanying assortment of pickled greens, cucumbers, cabbage, and soy egg were all nicely done and balanced out the bento box perfectly. At this price point and in this area, you cannot go wrong here. I'll be back!

It's a small Taiwanese shop in the Jusgo grocery store with limited seating. You can tell it's pretty authentic based on the handwritten menu and Taiwanese speaking workers. I ordered the rice w/ soy braised pork chop ($7.99) along with a grilled sausage ($2.50). The bento box was really filling and the piece of pork given was huge. It also includes a braised egg, Taiwanese cabbage, rice, and a few slices of sausage! All in all, both things I ordered were delicious and I'll have to come back. Note that it's cash only if your order is under $10!

Wow such a hidden gem! This little shop is tucked away at the inside entrance of the Jsugo supermarket. The menu is mostly in Chinese with English translations on the sides. The Taiwanese bento boxes here are really great for the price! For $6.99 you can order a whole bento box meal which will definitely fill you up.We ordered the braised pork bento box and it was delicious! The braised pork was served on a bed of rice, with a tea egg, and a bed of veggies on the side. All of the food was delicious and cooked well. The soy sauce chicken leg bento also looked really good but was sold out for the night.Definitely give this place a shot!

Mama Wu's is one of the best spots to get Taiwanese-style railroad bentos in the Houston Area! Hidden in Jusgo Supermarket Sugar Land, this mom-and-pop shop offers affordable and authentic Taiwanese eats. I really enjoy the Taiwanese sausage, pork chop, and roasted chicken bento boxes. There's not much seating, but it's a good place to buy togo to bring home for lunch and dinner. Also, they usually close during the summers for a few months because the owners go back to Taiwan.

This is a no frills Taiwanese kitchen, but the food is awesome! There are not too many Taiwanese foods/restaurants in Houston, so it's great to see authentic taiwanese-style foods. I love the pepper pastry they make, and they almost always sell out before I get there. I have had the braised pork belly bento, and it is good. The frozen items are good as well, but you will have to reheat them at home. They are located in a stall before you get into the Jusgo market in Sugarland. Note that they are closed Mondays and Thursdays.
