Returning to Houston after 20 years, I was pleasantly surprised to find La Mexicana still thriving. It's evolved from a humble hole-in-the-wall to a significant establishment, a testament to its staying power in the ever-changing Montrose area. The food at La Mexicana has always been more about the experience than culinary excellence. True to form, during my recent visit, I opted for the crispy tacos while my wife enjoyed the sopes. The flavors and presentation were consistent with my memories - comforting, yet unremarkable in terms of gastronomic innovation. The quality remains modest, aligning with its no-frills approach to traditional cuisine. However, it's important to note that prices have risen over the years. This might be a bit off-putting considering the quality hasn't seen a similar elevation. But for those of us who have a history with this place, La Mexicana holds a special spot. It's a repository of memories and a symbol of continuity in a city that's constantly evolving. In sum, while La Mexicana may not dazzle with its culinary offerings, its value lies in its nostalgia and the sense of community it fosters among long-time Houstonians. It's a reminder of the old Montrose, a slice of history that's worth revisiting for those who shared in its past.

Second time coming here and it was way better ! Service was really fast and attentive. Ordered 1 lb of beef fajita a double rice, shredded cheese. They offer a lot of different fajita plates but I got the basic meat by the lb. The beef coulda been more juicy but it was well over 1lb. Queso was good and had options to add meat on there as well. Overall great because of the service I had.

The decor of this restaurant reminds me so much of Mexico, I truly love it. The hostess wasn't as friendly as one should be, she could smile a little more. Our party of 7 was quickly seated and attended to. Everyone ordered something different and we were pleased with the overall taste of our dishes. I do feel like some of their dishes are over priced. Unless I'm in the area, I don't see myself taking a 25 minute drive to come here again.

Food is good but the prices are ridiculous. I'llAlways pay for a good taco, but $6 for this is insane. All their meat tacos are small and way over priced.

LA MEXICANA: A True Gem of Authentic Mexican CuisineIf you're searching for an authentic Mexican dining experience that combines the warmth of family tradition with the zest of true Mexican flavors, look no further than La Mexicana. This restaurant is not just an eatery; it's a destination where cleanliness, authenticity, consistent quality, attentive service, and affordability converge to create an unparalleled dining experience. The authenticity of La Mexicana's offerings is validated by the frequent patronage of the Mexican Consulate, which not only enjoys casual dining here but also celebrates special occasions within its welcoming walls. This nod of approval from those who know Mexican cuisine best speaks volumes.Let's talk about the food that will tantalize your palate:- The Menudo is a symphony of robust flavors, a hearty broth teeming with tender tripe, hominy, and a harmonious blend of spices that culminate in a soul-warming dish perfect for any meal. (A Mexican hangover favorite!)- Breakfast at La Mexicana is an affair to remember, especially their breakfast tacos. Imagine soft, handmade tortillas cradling a mixture of freshly scrambled eggs, crisp-edged potatoes, and a choice of fillings from chorizo to bacon, all melting together in perfect harmony. Not the cold faux tortilla stuff you get in franchises.- The Machacado con Huevo a la Mexicana is a feast for the senses, with reconstituted shredded dry beef interwoven with scrambled eggs, tomatoes, onions, and jalapeños, creating a bold and savory tapestry of flavors. A Northern Mexican favorite of mine.- A bite into the Chicharrón con Huevo a la Mexicana presents a delightful textural contrast, the crunch of pork cracklings softened in a bath of scrambled eggs and salsa, embodying the comfort of home-cooked perfection. Don't knock it till you try - As for the Chilaquiles, they are nothing short of a masterpiece. Crispy tortillas soaked in a vibrant salsa, interlaced with crema, cheese, and a hint of cilantro, make for a dish that is as visually stunning as it is delicious.La Mexicana's full bar and inviting patio amplify the dining experience, providing the perfect backdrop for sipping on a margarita or enjoying a cerveza in the open air. And while the ambiance is usually serene, be prepared for a vivacious atmosphere on Saturday mornings when the Memorial Hospital nightshift nurses come in to unwind. Their high spirits are infectious! This family-owned business stands alone at the pinnacle of its class. It's a place not just to eat, but to explore and share. Bring friends, share dishes, and discover your new favorite. La Mexicana is more than a restaurant; it's a culinary adventure waiting to be experienced at a very fair price.

Save your money and go somewhere else because this is not authentic Mexican food. The food tastes like it came out the can and the tortillas were hard. The enchiladas are garbage. There are many ingredients missing from there so called authentic Mexican dishes. Just because it's been around for a long time doesn't mean it's authentic Let's talk about the waiter, the waiter is very quiet and serious. I asked him if there was a kids plate with just plain meat beans and rice. he recommended me a fajita plate and we went with it. After the food arrived we realized how big my son's plate was compared to ours and how much more expensive it was. ( the money was no real issue) it was the fact that his recommendation was way off. We criticized his recommendation and he insulted us by saying you have the menu you can read it. after going back and forth with him we found that there is a kids plate with exactly what we asked for and it was a fraction of the price of what he recommended. This place is insane.

Food over priced and the tamales are horrible, no meat in them, I wouldn't go back even if my food was comped.

I brought my boyfriend here two years ago and he fell in love with the food! We started coming very often. Decent price, delicious, real tortillas, and great drinks. If you want a dessert, the sopapillas are THE BEST!
