Also, once they were out of stock of what I needed but the staff mentioned they'll get it the next day - and sure enough they did! Super friendly."

"I was going to tell you all about this grocery store, but if I told you I knew any details, I'd be Lyons to myself. This is the convenience store to the east of downtown in a pretty low-rent area. It's a little rough but it's not too bad. They have pretty high prices on stuff, and that can be expected from any given convenience store as you would expect. It's a bit shady going in and out oftentimes and that's why I tossed it a 3. Rather than the 4 I was considering."

I originally planned to eat at the establishment, but the way big delay for a burger and fries caused me to run out the door and not even get a chance to eat my food until after I drove home. The day I visited it was not even that busy to have a 15 minute wait for a burger and fries. Like seriously? While they were fresh, I was able to eat some fries during my meeting, but the burger was way later. Don't get me wrong- the price point for the burger and fries is fine, but you gotta season the meat! It was the most bland burger I've ever tasted. Even with mustard, the patty still needed salt. Tragic. I may go again when I have plenty of time to sit and eat and bring any dissatisfaction to their attention, but for now, 2 stars is all this delicattesan gets from me.."

Tucked away in a little corner shopping strip off of 1960, they offer a variety of products from alkaline water to head wraps, fedoras, fruit, desserts, laundry detergent, soap & even a small frozen section- all black owned. The space is clean & spacious & speaking with the owner feels like walking into your local neighborhood spot-you know the one that asks how your weeks been & knows you by name. While they're building out, I'm sure the offerings will vary depending on the vendors holding shelf space, and although they're not YET a substitute for your grocery store run, I'm glad they're here & excited to continue to visit and watch them grow."

Even though the only thing I was thinking when I saw the bright lights illuminating HUNG DONG from the highway was Frank Reynolds' line from one of the best episodes of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: "Whoops! I dropped my monster condom that I use for my magnum dong." They don't sell that here, but thanks for asking.I found this while on a brief frolic and detour from trying to find the Sam Houston Race Park for the Cirque du Soleil and being led astray by Siri for a few turns just within spitting distance of actually finding SHRP - he was promptly put in time out for that freshman move.I wanted to stock up on snacks that could be smuggled into Amaluna a la movie theatre style - I had the pocket depth for some real candy. Unfortunately I walked out empty handed. Nothing caught my fancy. Selection of snacks took a hit for one star and then the overwhelming smell that slaps you in the face as you walk in also reduced it a star. It's in a huge strip mall and parking is very limited. That might reduce star quality further. But if you use it as a waypoint when you try to find SHRP and Siri is sassin' you up with wrong directions, it's a good place to stop and look for snacks. Don't expect a five star assortment and be ready to become one with the overwhelming stench."

The produce was well organized, and there were several employees restocking the shelves as we shopped. For this week, I wanted to get ingredients to make California rolls, Banh Mi, Beef Pho, Spring Rolls, and Hot Pot, and was able to find all of the ingredients I needed here except for the French baguette for the banh mi. However, since it's right across the street from an HEB, it wasn't a major inconvenience. We also picked up some pantry items like snacks, tea, and instant ramen, and they had a really good selection of items to choose from.Overall, I'm happy to have anotrrrhueuoyroyoutoutoor Asian grocery store in the Katy area to choose from, and the prices are comparable to 99 Ranch and Hmart. (yes, i just said foodstuffs.) there were rainbow colored beans in one aisle, and funky drinks that some people's wildest imaginations couldn't even come up with. i got me some guava nectar (standard classic), and a bizarre pink drink that was rose flavored with basil seeds. i used to trick my white friends that bubble tea was tadpoles, and always got a kick out of the disgusted faces they'd make as i happily slurped it all down. well, i don't know if these are real basil seeds, or what, but these things really do look like tadpoles. well, if they are, they taste like tapioca balls and have the texture of ikura (salmon roe). anyways, i'm not dead, and i drank it yesterday, so i guess i'm a fan."

I never took the aloof customer service too personally anyways. I know that people may have language and cultural barriers. Anyhow, I like this ethnic shop because it carries a lot of unique and international grocery. Its not too far from where I live and it definitely beats driving all the way to Phoenicia. I still visit Phoenicia every now and then, but this spot is closer and its smaller as well, so it makes grabbing items quick. They have fresh cut meats and they also have fruits and vegetables. They have a nice dairy selection.. consisting of yogurt, labne and various European cheeses. I also like their spice selection as well. If you're looking into jazzing up your flavour palate, than I definitely recommend buying the spices here. They also have a nice candy and jam selection. I love buying the Turkish version of nutella here. It's the Ulker brand. They also carry this nice hazelnut spread which is delectable on toast. The biryani's are tasty and a must-try, and I think maybe actually taste better the next day. I also tried the chicken samosa and the samaosa which were good but not my favorite favorite, but still good. Que N. "Tien Hung is a small Asian grocery located in rather run-down shopping center on Beechnut and Wilcrest. This store took over part of the old Viet Hoa, which was in the innermost corner of the shopping center. When my family moved to Houston in the early 90's, I remember frequenting the old Viet Hoa on the weekends. With time, things evolved and Viet Hoa became one of the Asian grocery store powerhouses in its current location on Beechnut and Beltway 8.With Chinatown's busy weekend traffic, it's convenient to have a few smaller Asian stores like Tien Hung as alternatives for ingredients or supplies. Obviously don't let the run-down store or presence of peddlers turn you away, but always be cautious of your surroundings. Do as I do, quickly get in, grab what you need, and go! The storefront is not the cleanest nor most well-maintained, but they do offer a limited selection of seafood, meats, and produce. Occasionally, my mom comes here for Asian herbs and pho bones and meats to save time. Should you need ground pork from certain cuts or sliced meat, you can request those services from the butcher. Sometimes, the shrimp in the seafood section is even cheaper than Viet Hoa or Hong Kong.My favorite items to get are the homemade pork and shrimp wontons, which are made in-house daily. The wontons are located in the refrigerated section in the back of the store. For $6.50, you get a reusable 14 oz package of 32 wontons. Since I buy them in bulk and have to transport them 5-6 hours in the car, I freeze them as soon as I get home. Before eating the wontons, I let them defrost in the refrigerator for use the next day. These wontons are the perfect addition to make your own wonton soup with egg noodles, veggies, chicken broth, and whatever other ingredients you prefer. Everyone that has tasted these wontons loves them, especially during those cold winter nights.Another favorite of mine is the 25lb bag of Con Nai Bao Bo(deer) jasmine rice. I have purchased about 3 bags already because of how fragrant it is when cooking. Compared to other brands, this jasmine rice is more soft and moist, with a subtle sweetness. It's more expensive than other brands at $27.50, but definitely give this brand of jasmine rice a try if you're wanting a better flavor/texture profile. At the front checkout counter, there are a small selection of homemade Vietnamese goodies like: sesame balls, banh bong lan (sponge cake), and shredded pork & pork skin (bi). I haven't tried any of the baked sweets here since Parisian Bakery is right next door, but I have tried the tasty shredded pork & pork skin (bi), which is sold by the pound. You can use the "bi" as a spring roll ingredient, on toasted French bread, or to be eaten with rice or broken rice dishes. Don't expect friendly service and the cashier lady often tries to ask you to buy more homemade goodies. Like I said earlier, grab only what you need and be on your way.Consider Tien Hung as your local Asian convenience store. I frequently stop by when my mom needs a few ingredients for dinner to avoid the hassles of parking and traffic at Viet Hoa or Hong Kong. And you can always grab fresh French bread, pate chaud and sweet goodies next door at Parisian Bakery too. Less hassles and getting sweet treats afterwards = winning!"

Not expecting much for being out in the country, I decided to hit up Yelp for lunch. Well, today was a lucky spin.Imagine a cold winter day. You're in the house trying to get warm. The only thing that feels good is a warm blanket. Why does this matter? When I opened my bacon cheeseburger, there was literally a bacon blanket covering the inside of my burger. As I closed the burger and brought it to my mouth for the first bite, it was like the music video for Loverboy's Almost Paradise song. I'm not even kidding -- not only was the burger solid, but there was an appropriate bacon overload. Some bacon fell out, but there was still plenty of bacon in the burger. Oh, and don't worry -- I didn't leave a fallen bacon behind. I will post a picture of the burger.I had ordered onion rings as well, but truthfully I never made it to them. I was full about halfway through my burger. I devoted all of my strength to taking down edible work of art. Man won with the burger, but the onion rings were orphaned. If you're driving between Houston and San Antonio, stop by. They take all major credit cards. It's only 2 minutes or so off the highway. I can't wait to stop back by this place. Where else can you order a Japanese rice lager, strawberry rhubarb smash, quiche, tart cherry sour (featuring whiskey, tart cherry shrub, and egg white), torrijas, fresh juice, Mexican coke, wine, fattosh salad, herbal tea, grilled cheese, and Cortado all in one spot (and I'm excluding food halls in this rhetorical question)! While some may ask if this spot is having an identity crisis, they suggest their menu is loosely Mediterranean inspired, and I personally think it provides a fun reason to revisit! My lunch was fairly simple- Americano with oat milk, lamb flatbread, brownie (how boring of me), which may account for why my experience was just fine. The lamb flatbread was tasty with the salsa, and while the simple greens provided a much needed textural crunch, I'd love a fresh/herbal element of an additional texture. The creaminess of some feta, or fresh addition of some ground mint would really blow this dish away. While I was there there were only 2 person studying on my visit, being relatively quiet at this time of day, I can see how this can be a beautiful study/remote work spot (with gorgeous light). The rest of the crowd consisted of duos (mainly female, with a few significant others seemingly convinced into joining).Overall, pretty solid spot!
