One of the few late night spots in chinatown and they have a wide variety of drinks and bakery items. I also think they have noodles and such as well. Very friendly staff here and they can take card/Apple Pay but prefer cash. Some seats inside for a casual, simple spot to eat inside. The taro smoothie was very good, both creamy and smooth. Perfect refresher on a hot night. Custard bun was okay as well, low amount of filling though. Will definitely remember to try more of their drinks late night when I'm around. Thanks

Rolling into Philly at the 30 Street station, I needed to get dinner. Most folks would have automatically sought out a Cheesesteak but I looked at a map and saw Chinatown was not too far away. After a quick Lyft ride, I stopped at the main gate and decided to just wander a bit to see if anything would strike my fancy. Before I found a restaurant, I came across Hong Kong bakery. Mom and pop Chinese bakeries are increasingly rare nowadays so I'm always happy to check one out. Funny part is, when I tried to open the door it was locked, but the owners inside saw me and came over to open it. I must have gotten there just as they locked it.It was about 7pm-ish so I figured it would be slim pickings but much to my surprise they had plenty of items available! The lady behind the counter was also kind enough to make a dinner recommendation for me (which will be the subject of a future review!).I tried two items out: their Moon Cakes and Egg Tarts. The Moon Cakes are made in-house, which is not as common as it used to be. I picked up the mini ones since I was traveling. These were purely filled with lotus paste, and I have to say they were really good! There was a nice sweetness to them that was not overwhelming. The outer shell was nice and chewy and held together nicely. The egg tarts were not the style I typically get. I prefer the ones with the flaky crust like those I grew up with but I noticed starting around the early 2000's some bakeries shifted over to a more traditional pie crust that was more uniform and thick. That is the style this bakery uses. I would give the egg tarts a B-. The crust was okay, but not super buttery (which is my preference) but the filling had a nice, eggy flavor to it with just the right level of sweetness. The next time I am in town, I'll definitely stop by this bakery again to try something else!

Friendly lady at the register, but unfortunately, the egg tart here is incredibly subpar. The custard isn't terrible, but the puff pastry is supposed to be flaky...But the word 'flaky' has lost all meaning here.I hope their other offerings are much better...

We stopped in on a Saturday. There was friendly service but the buns were stale. The egg tarts fell apart.

After stopping off at two other Chinese bakeries this evening looking for a pineapple bun to no avail, I was pleased to step in to the HK Bakery Shop and find that there was one remaining bun prior to closing for the day. I snatched it right up and took it over to Franklin Square to munch on while enjoying the water fountain and the cooler weather. The bun was just as I remembered from my time living in Hong Kong--perhaps a little on the dry side given it was end of day, but just as airy inside and flaky outside. Plenty of other baked goods to choose from but I was a man on a mission and paid little attention to anything else. Would come back and try more of the menu in the future.

It was a very expensive $2 steamed bun. For that size, it should be $1. Plus there was more bread than filling.

I really enjoyed this place. Their bubble tea is soft and not overly sweet. I ordered the avocado smoothie with boba. I like how the drink was so smooth, they use like sushi ice or something. There weren't chunks of ice or anything in it which was awesome. And the avocado was strong. They also have a cute Pina colada in a whole pineapple that they were trying to push, which seemed too intense for me. And everything is really affordable. The guy in the front was very nice and personable. He seems to be an account in the area, and offering to help people open bank accounts. Their pastries are bit ordinary, but you can tell they put a lot of hard work into their pastries by how they look. Overall, not a bad experience. If I'm in the area I'd drop by again.

I came here while I was wandering around Chinatown. I came across this place and was surprised that it was still open. A lot of bakery places had closed already. I wanted to give a try and got 2 buns - taro and red beans. I love the taro one, but i didn't like the red bean. The red bean paste inside was dry and not a lot. The staff was nice and welcoming. I wouldn't mind coming back to try other items here. I would give a 3.5 stars but I only tried 2 things and their service was nice. So I rounded up to 4 stars.

Purchased this Saturday and put in the fridge right away. Tuesday morning, the whole cake roll was moldy. Another reviewer mentioned this too. Will not come back again as the breads are clearly not fresh. Also will add that I went to Mayflower bake shop and purchase the same Swiss roll at the same time and it is still fresh and good! Clearly, it is not the time that elapsed but quality of food.
