I used to live across the street from what is now Heng Feng. At the time, it was Shanghai 1; it was never quite a top-tier Chinatown eatery, but it was rock solid and generally not given to the kind of massive wait times some of the better known restaurants in the neighborhood could develop. We recently realized it's now Heng Feng and stopped in after looking over the menu. I notice this page still has the review I wrote in 2019 for Shanghai 1, so maybe there's some kind of continuity between the two? In any case, the menu is a real powerhouse now. I love that it offers my favorite dim sum and a full range of noodle soups (beef, duck, lamb, etc); normally in Chinatown I would go to Dim Sum Garden for the former and its next-door neighbor Nanzhou La Mien for the latter. Having both, plus ample dry noodle, rice, and meat and vegetable dishes all on one menu makes this a great one-stop shop for good quality Chinese food. At this point, I've only been to Heng Feng once under the current name; we ordered pan friend soup dumplings, beef noodle soup, and....whatever it was my fiancé got for her entree, haha (some kind of chicken and noodle dish). I at least tried everything (in classic Chinese restaurant style, there was no real rhyme or reason beyond readiness to when things came out, so her noodle dish came out, followed a few minutes later by my soup, and eventually the dumplings, which in our minds were the appetizer; she took pity on me and let me share the noodles until my stuff came), and it was all at least good. Her chicken & noodle dish was tasty, but not the kind of thing I tend to order, so I'll leave it at that. The fried soup dumplings were plenty flavorful and substantial, but they didn't totally succeed at the tricky but not-impossible task of coming out with a good amount of broth inside that hadn't been absorbed. I'm sure this wouldn't be an issue with traditional xiao long bao, though, which the menu also offers a few varieties of and which I personally prefer. The main event for me was my beef noodle soup, and that definitely hit. The broth felt pretty light when it came out - not the most full-throttle, "BEEF!" flavored version I've had, but still good. But with some chili oil spooned in and a few bites of the endlessly flavorful beef in my mouth, it all came together in satisfying fashion as I made my way to the bottom of the bowl. If there is some kind of direct connection between Shanghai 1 and Heng Feng, one thing I can say for sure is that HF has upped the noodle soup game. The experience left me very willing to do a return trip and explore more menu options, because I was slobbering at the prospect of trying all kinds of stuff I didn't order that day, from the regular soup dumplings to the "garlic eggplant" (aka fish sauce eggplant).

April 2024 - Fairly new business in PA Chinatown per the grand opening signage. The menu has an Asian Fusion mixed menu - rice plates, noodle soups, fried rice and the like. Overall the decor looked very new and clean. Tables were a bit cozy to maximize seating space but good for groups of all sizes. There was little to no wait for my party of three as I arrived at an off time. Early dinner on a Friday evening (just about 6:15pm). But I notice it was the last open table. The food was just okay. Was a little disappointed given we were in Chinatown. I expected more authentic regional flavors - taste wise. But for me, it seemed to be more geared to the Western clientele. The menu was Pan Asian as well. Sad for me but fine for everyone else I suppose since it filled up. The fried dumplings were the only item that I recommend. I did not care for the rice dish or the noodle soup I ordered.

Soup dumpling:Def not known for them. Skin was thin and thus wasn't strong enough to withhold being picked up even if gently via the tip; multiple dumpling broke before reaching out plates and they had the audacity to bring a broken one to serve as you can see from our photos. And we're familiar with how to eat soup dumplings.Scallion pancakes were like 99% dough, 1% scallions. Although the fried flaky texture was good. However, the pork large intestines were good and would be open to trying those again. Does take card as payment option.

Our favorite hand drawn noodle soup place, spice C was closed on Wednesday! So we decided to give this place a shot. Ownership changed over the summer and reviews seemed promising. Food was just ok. Broth was lacking in flavor and meat was very chewy. Soup dumplings were very good, but not something I would return here for. Pig ears were disappointing in texture and taste. If craving Taiwanese hand drawn noodle soups, give spice c a try.

My last review was for when this restaurant was still Shang Hai 1, so I felt like it was necessary to update my review since it's under a new name and management. I came here with my family and saw the great reviews, but realizing that they'd inherited previous reviews. Needless to say, we were quite excited to try a new place. Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed. We had a party of 5 and they sat us at a 4-top with a person at the end, no biggie. They were busy and tried to accommodate us as best they could. However, the staff continued to bump into my family member on the end with no apologies or gentleness. We ordered a variety of noodle soups, appetizers, etc. Half of what we ordered either came out wrong or they gave us the completely wrong dish. Some dishes were taken back for correction and still came out wrong the second time. Everything tasted like cheap imitations of what Shang Hai 1 used to serve. We didn't enjoy any of what we ordered. Also deleting my previous photos as they no longer apply to Heng Feng.

Because Philly Chinatown has various amount of great restaurants that offer superb services and flavorful food, I will give this place just an "okay" establishment. It serves the purpose of filling you up when you're hungry, but won't take your breath away. The server was great and fast. There are a good amount of seatings. Here's the food breakdown:General Tso Chicken - what you would expect if you go to an unlimited all you can eat Chinese food aka buffet. I'm expecting more on the meat, less on the coatings.Beef Ho Fun: good flavor, had an ample amount of beef, but the noodles were overcooked (as you can see from the pic). House Special Noodle Soup: I don't see the pork sauce that they advertised. The taste was mid.

Solid 4. Not sure I believe the noodles were actually hand pulled, but how am I to know? Tasty anyway, good price, friendly service, and clean.

Service is good and the store is very clean. Yet I can't say the noodle is tasty. Actually they just taste super bland, not good at all. The beef with bone in the noodle is tough to chew. The braised meat trio is not of good value, tiny amount. It's such a big letdown as we travelled all the way from the suburb.
