Amazing inventive cuisine in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere from Pat and Mel. Seriously - one delicious bite after another that you can't find anywhere else!

It's difficult to convey the sincere culinary passion behind the Owners Pat and Mel. Spending the day running a would class sausage store, and then a few nights a week, have the organizational skills as well as the emotional and physical endurance to serve 2 seatings offering world class cuisine all with genuine smiles. I got exhausted just writing that! We had Thursday night reservations for the 1st seating at 6:00. They do an amazing job transforming a sausage store into an intimate dining atmosphere. My wife and I were fortunate enough to sit at the chef's counter to watch the well orchestrated chaos unfold. Pat took a break to explain the meal that everyone was about to enjoy with stories regarding inspiration and influences as well as two add ons that were not included in the prepaid priced fixed experience. We let Mel who was amazing running the front of the house know that we wanted both add ons. One was a gorgeous steak tartare, and the other was a lamb fat ravioli. Needless to say everything that we put in our mouth was spectacular! I'll let the attached pictures of our meal as well as the menu tell the rest of this story. Make a reservation and bring a good bottle with you to experience this epic establishment for yourself!

We were thrilled to have reservations to one of the early seatings at the Heavy Metal Sausage Company. During the day, they're a butcher shop and on Friday and Saturday nights, they have a pop up shop that feels like a cozy dinner party. We had great seats at the counter (although it was a little cold with the air blowing on us) and got to watch Pat at work while his wife Melissa bustled around serving each course. A great start to this particular 4-course meal (the menu changes) was the antipasti which was served on two tiers. Our favorites were the pesto potatoes and eggplant dip. They even made sure to add meatballs when I let them know ahead of time about my husband's food allergies which was so accommodating. I can't say enough about the next course which was polenta with raw scallops and chanterelles-a perfect combination of flavors and texture. The stuffed porchetta with apricot glaze was good too. Finally, the meal ended with whipped ricotta and fruit over brioche pieces. All delicious! Be sure to bring your wine. You'll love the atmosphere from the cozy dinner party feel to the adorable, mismatched china and of course, the food.

Lovely, welcoming service in this neighborhood butcher/corner shop in South Philadelphia: we stopped by for sandwiches and came away with sausage and bread, too. Loved that we could order from the selective menu or build our own sandwich/plate with their offerings. The pickled carrots were a surprising treat--and that's said as a non-carrot lover! Highly recommend!

I've been passing this store so many times but never realized it existed. The sign is on the door but I don't see any markings.Upon entering I could smell smoked meat. Heavy metal music was played but not deafening. There is a table for 4, a table for two, and some seats against the wall. The menu is written on the blackboard next to the door.I wanted salad but wasn't available. If you don't want the bread for the sandwich, they can make it for you. I picked spicy beef tartare, special of the day. I told the owner that I don't like spicy food, he gladly accommodated my preference. My husband had blood sausage sandwich. It was served on rye bread. The sausage was sliced as deli meat, it tasted like Lebanon bologna. A lot of meat for a small sandwich. Very tasty. Some sandwiches are served with their homemade ciabatta. My beef tartare was delicious. Perfect acidity, didn't smell or taste raw meat. There's a raw egg yolk on top. You can buy several deli meat, mostly are smoked. There are some grocery items that you can buy such as pasta and hot sauce.Owners are super friendly.Definitely come back to support local business.

Great Friday dinner (1st seating @6PM) tasting menu, all prepared & cooked each course, served hot. Trofie (pasta) with arugula pesto overall is good & tasty, a bit al-dente to my personal liking. Loved and enjoyed the Spaghetti alla Gricia, outstanding & delicious.Salsiccia (Italian sausage) itself is perfect, meaty and has a nice light sauce. It comes with radicchio salad, but a bit bitter to my taste. Sweet potato crostata for dessert was just fine, but the honey gelato is delicious. Coffee was ok, tad on the bitter side.Overall, it was a great experience. Parking was surprisingly easy considering you're in the heart of South Philly.

Butcher shop by day, intimate dinner pop up by night, Heavy Metal Sausage is a real neighborhood gem. They only have a few tables inside, but during the day you can get a few sandwiches, some charcuterie boards, or just come by to pick up locally made patés and sausages. I picked up a Poppe sandwich and a paté a few months ago- both delicious. You can modify the bread if you don't like rye.We did the Trattoria dinner on a Thursday night, a BYOB Italian style dinner of several courses for $65 pp. There are only a few tables, mostly for 2 or 4 people, and a few tables in the actual kitchen overlooking the action so you can see how the sausage is made. We started with some pickled green beans, then had some tomato pie, pasta, 2 different veggies- romanesco and radicchio, and goose 2 ways- pulled on cheesy polenta and sliced breast. Turns out goose is not only silly but also scrumptious. Similar to duck. Dessert was house made cannoli and gelato. We also splurged on all the add ons- a truffle pasta, a spicy salami, and a cheese course which was an extra $60 total. It was way too much food and we took home about half the veggies and polenta, some pizza, cannoli and even some cheese and bread. The atmosphere was lovely, like being at a small dinner party, cozy interior, adorable dishes, delicious and interesting food.I don't know anything about heavy metal, but I do know about meat, and pop ups, and you should go here and try this place out!

When I say this place is special, I mean it. I've come for the tasting menu in the past, and wanted to stop by again for a more casual lunch dining experience. I arrived with my friend at 11:30 on a Saturday morning and there were some classic south Philly italian dads drinking their second bottle of champagne and chatting with the owner behind the counter. There was a steady stream of customers coming in and making conversation, which was fully entertaining and endearing, as the owner knows each person, knows their orders from last week, and makes recommendations for their next week, all while catching up and asking about their family. The community that this place has fostered on porter street only adds to the spectacular and unique food. I'm not a girl for cold cuts, but decided to try the smoked ham sandwich and was blown away by how fresh and interesting this was. All sandwiches come with homemade pickles. I would recommend trying both the sandwiches and the tastings they have on Thursday (and Friday?) nights. The tastings are just as intimate, with regulars and newcomers having time to chat with the owners and watch them as they prep the meal. I'm so glad that they received a James beard nom - they deserved this!
