Don Jose Mexican Restaurant

I used to love this place. Service has declined. They are not open when they are supposed to be. Very inconsistent.

My family has been searching for a Tex-Mex restaurant that has *perfect everything* since we arrived in Houston in 2000. Of course we did not try everything on the menu, so I can't offer comments on it all, but I will say that most of their food is quite good.The staff that we had interactions with were all exceptionally nice/friendly/helpful. Specifically: the tostada chips and salsa are excellent; ground beef is very well-seasoned; refried beans are also excellent; Mexican rice is above average; tamales are a little too firm; cheese and beef enchiladas are both average; guacamole here is nothing more than mashed avocados; Biggest problem: the enchilada sauce/gravy is not at all the "chili gravy" I want. My strong preference on enchiladas and tamales is a chili con carne gravy--not enchilada sauce. If they actually do offer this, I'll be back to try it.For now, the search goes on.

I'd heard about this place and how good their flautas were, so being that it's relatively close to where I live, I walked up here for lunch. I ordered the beef fajitas off the lunch menu. Very good. The meat was cut against the grain in thicker pieces that were very juicy. Onions were soft and just starting to caramelize, which I enjoy caramelized onions. Rice and beans and pico were good enough. I did ask for some lime juice to freshen up the dish, and reliably received some lime wedges. One thing I would recommend for Don Jose is to work on the salsa. I noticed it was too tomato-based for my taste, so when the food came, I put some pico de gallo in it with lime juice and a little bit of salt, and mixed it up. It was just perfect. I'm a fan of a pretty chunky salsa, so I may be a tad bit biased. But other than that, Don Jose is a solid Tex-Mex restaurant. Good job!

Just no. One thing I hate is when I call back and they argue that I received the right thing. I'm unhappy with my food it's 12 f**king dollars be a good business and refund me. These people had no idea that yelp even matters. I told them it looked nothing like the pictures they have posted and they claimed that Yelp doesn't answer the phone!! omg. Im mexican and Japanese don't tell me I don't know my cuisines. This is not mole. Not returning. No wonder they can't move from that terrible looking place.**** OH AND THE FOOD THEY DID GIVE ME HAS SO MUCH SALT I COULDNT TELL WHAT FLAVORS IT HAD***** THEY ALSO SAID THE LUNCH PRICE WAS DINE IN ONLY****

There is no other Mexican restaurant I have found better than this place. It's been around for more than 50 years. The owner died and willed it to the Mexican waiters that have stuck with him that long. Their enchiladas cannot be beat!

The Best, we Love this Place and Atmosphere! Everything on the Menu is delicious. Been coming here for many years. The Staff is wonderful, so Friendly! Oh and very good Margaritas too!

Absolutely amazing food and service. Our server David was hospitable and friendly, answered all our questions and he enjoys and loves what he does. Gaucamole was fresh, delicious, grilled shrimp seasoned beyond perfection and the tortillas hot. would come again

I've been coming here for 30 years or more the food is fantastic and the clientele it's mostly regulars. If you have not ate here, you're missing out. The waiter amazing and they become your friends and family. This past year in 2020 they lost two owners to Covid. They are sad But happy to see everyone coming back to the restaurant . He will love their food and their Salsa is amazing.

I have been to Don Jose Mexican Restaurant many times because of my social group meets every month. Parking is plenty at the lot during week nights. Wait staff were friendly and service was fast.I usually order restaurants' signature dish whenever I visit a new restaurant. At Don Jose, the signature dish is enchiladas. There are so many combinations to choose from. Dinner menu comes with rice and/or beans. I don't like leftovers. So, I order from the combo menu. Just the other day, I had #5 that comes with 2 chicken enchiladas, crispy beef taco and guac salad last visit. I like the plating presentation. The beef taco was served in a mini taco bowl with juicy and seasoned ground beef on a bed of shredded lettuce. Guac salad was fresh and delicious. I usually add some salt and squeeze a lime on the lettuce to jazz up the flavor. After I finished the enchilada, I use the chips to scoop up the melted cheese from the enchilada plate. Mmm... queso yummy.I tried the menudo once and I wouldn't recommend. It was watered down; doesn't matter how much seasoning I add. The best part of the dinner meeting is the load of tortilla chips and bottomless salsa.

Long time, family owned Mexican restaurant. Great family friendly staff and simple, good, Mexican food. Strong margaritas too!
