Very delicious food and good portions. Service is attentive. There is a cute robot with cat ears that serves the food. Dont know why this place is rated so low.

I went here with some friends on a Thursday for dinner. It was really easy and quick to get a table. If you're ordering the dry pot/hot pots you can customize it with whatever toppings you want and can pick the level of spiciness and broth. They give you a piece of paper and a pencils to make your order. You can also order off the menu for specific dishes, but I HIGHLY recommend doing the dry pot and hot pots with soup. We ordered both mild and chose a good selection of 5 ingredients per dish with glass noodles for both. Super flavorful and very generous serving sizes! We ordered two and split it between the four of us. The ambiance is nice, pretty quiet and easy to hear each other over dinner. Also they have one of those robot waiters that carry the food over and seems like people either hate those or love those so take that information how you will lol. I really enjoyed the food and am excited to go back for more!

I don't know how many times I dream about the broth here. I would come leave New York just to have this. Sooooo good. You write what you want in your bowl in a piece of paper and give it to the worker, and then a cute little kitty robot brings the bowl out! I dream about the broth every now and then. So so so yummy!! Pretty spacious so you can just walk in to satisfy your cravings (:

Perfect for those chilly days when you're just craving a HUGE bowl of hot, spicy soup with literally whatever you want in it. I find myself coming back here whenever I want a comforting meal. Definitely opt for the " build your own" bowl or dry plate option. They give you a check list and a pencil and you can add any veg, meat, greens you want. The bowls are literally huge and will last you for two meals at least. Definitely would recommend sharing between two people. Great bang for your buck for a personalized meal.

It's one of my favorite places for mala hotpot in the country and I'm surprised at the low ratings I see here. I think they have gotten much better recently and the service is nice - one time they ran out to the streets to give the customer their water bottle left behind. They're not like the type where you expect them to come and ask you how's everything going but they're pretty efficient and get things done. They have the mala stir fry and mala hotpot with lots of ingredients to choose from, and a separate menu for common Chinese food which are definitely not the selling point of this place. If you like spicy food that's also a bit oily the mala stir fry is for you. They made it the authentic way and the flavor is on point. The best item is their pork intestine - so chewy, juicy, and a little fatty! I always get 2 portions and I just can't get over how good they taste

I've been here a few times before and always enjoyed my meal here! I love that your bowl is highly customizable -- you can make it dry or with soup, add whatever protein you'd like, even the type of noodle is up to you! I think the variety is great, and I think the quality of the ingredients is pretty solid. Sometimes the flavor can get a little unidimensional since everything is just in one pot with the same broth, but even then it's still good! I will mention that the level of spiciness is pretty hit of miss here; one time I got medium spicy and it was almost inedible because of how difficult it was to eat! The following times since, I have gotten little spicy and found that it's not spicy enough.

Really debated leaving 3 stars because the service was pretty bad. Chinese places usually have bad service and this place definitely qualifies as they care like you're doing them a favor by showing up. Came close to leaving before even getting a table b/c they wouldn't even acknowledge we were standing there waiting. Flagging down someone to place our order and getting water refills took a while too. But I only gave four stars because the food was excellent. Ordered mala dry pot and it was awesome. Most places only stir-fry with mala seasoning, but they include a soy-based sauce that really paired well. Ingredients were fresh and plentiful and they give you a pretty big portion. Also had the scallion pancake which was a lot thicker than most, but still very good.

Chu Shang Spicy is one of my favorite go-to restaurants in Chinatown. I always get the spicy mala dry pot and customize it with a medley of ingredients, including pork, beef, enoki, lotus, water spinach, watercress, cabbage, Chinese cauliflower, bean sprouts, crab sticks, and the must-have wide glass noodles. The mouthwatering spicy flavor and numbing/tingling sensation are super addicting and pair perfectly with a bowl of fluffy white rice. I love spicy food and especially crave it during the winter. It is the perfect dish to share with friends, but make sure they can handle the heat (there are non-spicy flavors, but spicy is the best)!Of note, in my experience, the food can take a while to come out, especially if they are busy! Probably not the best place to go if you are looking for a quick meal.

This is the second time I've been here and the food is always delicious. I will say that it's best to order the minimum amount of toppings or else it will be very expensive. The dry pot comes with a side of white rice which is perfect for with the spicy food. Keeping in mind not ordering too much in quantity and less seafood/meat options it's pretty affordable for the amount they give. This is a great spot for Szechuan food in Chinatown. The service was good, workers kept the chit chat to a minimum which is what I prefer. The interior has up to date decor and is tidy and the cat robot is a plus

Ordered the dry hotpot from them after hearing good reviews from friends who live in Philly. When we got the food, it was a good spice level and on the salty end. My wife had put a nut allergy when we had ordered15 mins after finishing our meal, my wife started vomiting and our other friend developed hives. My wife and her other friend haven't eaten here in the past without issues but this time was no good. I also found a piece of steel wool in our food. Thank God I saw it before anyone ate that as well. I wasn't planning on writing a review for this place so I don't have any pictures. Threw the food out Will not be coming back here
