Chez Hansi

The service and friendliness of this mom & pop shop are unmatched. We truly felt like we became part of the family with Hansi (the chef) and his wife, our waitress. They're such an adorable couple and they truly care about crafting a nice time. She is from Morocco and he is from Germany, so the food itself is an interesting mix of inspirations.The bread we started with as a lovely olive bread that was toasted to perfection. Next came the Caesar salad- such a huge portion. Not as sardine-forward as typical and fairly lemony but a nice texture to the lettuce. The schnitzel was great with the spaetzle. The wasabi flavored salmon also had a wonderful texture. We were super full by the dessert menu so we were sent home with complimentary dessert. The spot is BYOB and they offer a 10% discount card to Rex down the street.The food is just served with such care that it was overall such a lovely experience and would easily visit the two again.

Simple menu but food is phenomenal. Love the Jaeger Schneitzel with mushroom sauce. The pork belly with sauerkraut and potatoes salad is dead for ( remember to make reservation and request this particular item, they don't always serve this item during the summertime). Love the music selection that brings you to a small town in Europe. You do feel visiting an uncle and welcome you with all your favorite food. Chef treated us with a spinach mushroom foie gras crepe and super tender pork belly with sauerkraut ( someone order ahead and it's not on summer menu). We're very blessed. It's so much food and I couldn't finish the cold pouched salmon and made that's a to-go at the end.

I can't believe it took me 3 years to find this gem (thank you restaurant week). An entire restaurant run solely by 2 people truly had me floored. To think 2 people can run an intimate restaurant at max capacity of I say about 25-30 people is beyond impressive. Food was served in a timely fashion, generous portions, exquisite technique, comforting food especially for a cool evening, and not to mention, a warm hearted service, what more could you ask for? I will never look at food and service the same way. The best way I can describe the food at Chez Hansi is comfort French inspired German food. Very interesting concept, yet elegantly executed. And when I say comfort, I mean it felt like I was dining at my Mom's dinner table. As you can see in the photo, the kitchen and chef are intimately located a few meters from the entrance. As you are seated and perusing the menu, I couldn't help but feel at someone's home. Even as the food was being served, the table felt familiar, the food warming, and you couldn't help but feel the 2 running the show were family. Although French inspired (apologies if I'm mislabeling this as maybe Moroccan), it wasn't French forward if that makes sense? Techniques used were French while maintaining the heartiness of the selected proteins. All the dishes stayed true to its roots and culture. My favorite was the Choucrute Garni. Ingredients are a tad strong in flavor separating but it goes a step above when you eat them together. Harmonious and scrumptious. Fats from the sausages are cut by the acidity of the sauerkraut, and then all are blended together by the creamy starch from the mash. Well done. Overall, an excellent showing. Like I said, I can't believe this place went unnoticed by me for 2-3 years. The two owners are beautiful humans and deserve everything for hosting such a unique and wonderful establishment. Seriously, Philly owes you for your home and passion for the community. Best of luck and I will definitely be seeing them again soon~

Thank you, Restaurant Week list, for letting me know this place exists!The couple who run it work their butts off. She makes all of the desserts AND is the sole server. He is in the kitchen making German, French and Moroccan dishes.We had an onion tart with Caesar salad--excellent. The onion tart wasn't too heavy despite what appears to be cream in it. They were quite busy and felt backed up (we didn't mind a slower pace for dinner), so he brought us all some of the cream of rutabaga soup. It had a silky texture, with ham added for extra flavor. My lamb tagine was so good. The meat was flavorful and tender, not too gamey. It was also plentiful. I took a large portion home for a delicious lunch. Had to leave room for the homemade desserts that were as beautiful as they were delicious. I loved the lemon tart. It was a good balance of sweet and tart. Service was on par with traditional fine dining. Our table was wiped of crumbs, and our silver replaced after each course. When my husband got up to use the restroom, she folded his napkin and put it on the chair for him. They were out of the Moroccan tea I requested, so she made us coffee. It was a kind gesture--she made decaf because it was late in the day. Everything about the evening was lovely. I'll be back soon on a regular evening to try more of the menu.

I am such a fan of mom and pop shops, and Chez Hansi is deserving of recognition. We went during restaurant week and had a lovely time! Must get: lamb, sausage (presentation may not be perfect, but the quality is amazing), crab cake, fresh bread, tiramisuMeh: the butter, the quail (slightly dry)Missed out: ?I recommend bringing cash, a bottle of your favorite beverage and have a great time! My dining experience here was absolutely phenomenal. When you walk in, it's not a large dining area by any means but it more than made up for it by providing amazing service, an inviting and intimate atmosphere, and delicious dishes. We started off with the spinach-garlic panna cotta and galette du crabe. The panna cotta, combined with the smoked salmon and capers was fantastic. The galette was reminiscent of a crab cake but much better.As for the royal tajine, it hit the spot in this winter weather. The braised lamb was so tender and it didn't taste gamey at all. As for the bastilla, I only had a bite of the chicken baked in phyllo but it was interesting to get a taste of savory and sweetness in a pastry. It was pretty good.The desserts definitely tasted homemade but in a great way. Even a small bite of the tarte citron had me wanting more! The tiramisiu also had me desiring more too.All in all, I enjoyed our close get together with friends and I would definitely come back again for another fantastic dining experience. I highly recommend bringing a couple of friends for a wonderful night out or bringing a date here! You won't be disappointed.

This place feels like going to your aunt and uncle's house for dinner. There's something so sweet and earnest about the owners I just want this place to do well. If you want to feel like you're getting a home cooked meal in a cozy low key European bistro, go hansi what's cooking! The vibe is cute, tiny flower vase on the tables, unpretentious, open kitchen (you can actually see the chef cooking behind the glass and the fridge and stove look like just a regular person's kitchen.) There is a small table outside and a bunch of tables downstairs too. They bring some baguette and butter when you order which is a nice touch.The menu is pan- European- French canard a l'orange, Moroccan chicken tagine, Spanish escabeche, German/Austrian schnitzel, Caesar salad and tiramisu. We ordered the escabeche which is like a chilled vinegary fish, scallops, and shrimp, the lyonnaise salad which was a special (delicious but a bit too much dressing), and the steak au poivre (another special) which came with potatoes which were delicious and Brussels and green beans and bacon. The chef sent over a complimentary cup of harira lentil soup which was simple and good, and a lemon tart which was delicious. We loved the tiramisu too! Don't expect everything on the menu to be available, but you might be lucky with other specials.BYOB and super cheap- $30 per person. This is not haute cuisine, but if you're looking for a low key neighborhood date or girls night, stop by!

This is one of those restaurants that is so good, you almost want to be selfish and not tell too many people about in case it gets so popular that you'll never be able to get a table again. If you like cozy, family run unpretentious European restaurants where the food is outstanding and the service is warm and friendly, this is the gold standard.

It hurts my heart to write this because I was so excited about this homey spot and the rotating menu items they listed. We arrived and placed our orders. It took about 30 minutes to receive a simple charcuterie board with bread we didn't care for and watery French onion soup with no cheese. Had they listed it as something else other than French Onion, the lack of that delicious melty cheese we all love would have bothered us less. Then, 45 min after ordering, we found out the entrees we ordered were no longer available. We begrudgingly order a steak, waited for it, and it was a bit chewy. We were noticeably disappointed and Chef and crew were quite apologetic, comping our meal and bringing out schnapps. Again, I feel REALLY BAD because I was so hoping this would be a neighborhood gem. Listen, if you are a chef opening a business, it is also your responsibility to manage the business side if you have nobody else doing it. That includes managing your inventory, etc. I wish them the best, and recommend some business classes to help set them up for sustainable success. The food is amazing and also at a reasonable price. I highly recommend beef bourguignon. The beef is cooked to perfect tenderness, juicy and flavorful. Service is also very attentive and kind. The restaurant is small but super cozy and clean. There are about 10-12 tables in total (a few on the first floor and a few downstairs). Their menu is seasonal. I would definitely come back to try more dishes.One thing to keep in mind is that they have a 4% surcharge for credit card payment. So bring cash if possible.
