One of many great steakhouses in Philadelphia, Butcher & Singer is housed in a space that used to be a bank. Not the crappy little pop up kiosks type ATM banks of today. Rather, this was obvious prior powerhouse building with soaring ceilings, marble and cement, and a huge vault. The lighting is low, there are perimeter semi private booths, and decor sporting nontoxic masculinity which all seem appropriate in this space serving up the classics. A great steak is perhaps my favorite food genre and this was my first time here. I pledge it will not be my last and I would put this in my top 10 great steakhouses I have visited. You will need to save up to eat here, take out a loan, or be a guest of someone with an expense account because it is not cheap. But it is also not the most expensive I have seen either. Some things on the menu were inappropriately high in my opinion but others seemed reasonable. Examples of this include a corkage fee of $40 (my experience in most place is that it is $30 but some have been as high as $50), a house craft Manhattan cocktail is $30 (I have seen craft ones as low as $18 and as high as $32), and an aged Delmonico (Ribeye) steak is $67 (I have seen dry aged ones usually in the $79 range). Nothing was cheap but it was also not the most expensive pricing I have run into. What do you get for these prices? All you would expect from a classic high-end steak house. There were great, straightforward menu items that were perfectly executed. Highlights of our evening were the escargot, the fresh oysters, the Butcher Salad (their version of a chopped garbage salad), the steaks, and the Icebox Lemon Pie. They also have an epic wine list if you are an oenophile but be forewarned, there are very limited selections that are affordable. Expect a 300-500% markup (even more for collector vintage bottles) so although their corkage fee is a bit higher than most I have run into, it is still a good way to maintain some value if you have great wine to bring in of your own. Parking is tough all over city center Philly so find a public garage and walk. Expect service to be professional and friendly but not over the top doting on you. And you would be most comfortable dressing towards up, not down (you will be fine in a collared shirt and jeans or better but I would avoid the shorts and flip flops). If you are ever visiting Philly and in need of a great steak, this is a solid choice in my book

Honestly, this is one of the few restaurants I've seen where the menu is one sheet The wine list is as thick as a book! waiter service was great! The medium rare we ordered was just right. The gravy exploded in my mouth and the meat was tender and satisfying! The mushroom&onion recommended by was very tasty!Half of the oysters are from the east and half of the oysters are from the west.Personally, I think the oysters on the right hand side are sweeterBAKED ALASKA is a little too sweet for me! But yummy, the top is like a toasted marshmallow textureThe inside is with a hint of banana flavor!Plus a thin layer of soft cake moldCREME BRÜLÉE The fruit wasn't very freshFinished off with a Blackberry Cosmopolitan, no wine as I was driving that day, hope to try wine next time!

This is a restaurant you go to for an experience. Is the food phenomenal? Yes. Is the 1930s bank setting lush? Impeccably. Do the drinks impress? More than your hipster speakeasy. Are the servers trained professionals? As a dying art. Everyone should at some point know what it is to truly "dine." Butcher and Singer creates an environment that the patrons should aspire to meet. You can come in a jersey and sneakers, but that's like wearing your beer helmet to the opera. There are few opportunities anymore to have a complete dining evening. Enjoy this. Our meal can only be described as 'complete.' Adeptly crafted cocktails and a comprehensive yet accessible wine list set a stage for an indulgent menu. There aren't shocking new dishes, these are steaks and seafood done exceedingly well. I had the aged New York strip, with a bit of truffle butter on the side. The bit of truffle complimented the amazing earthy nuttiness of the aged steak. We had the mashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts as sides, but honestly any of them would be incredible. There are perhaps three places on the planet I would order something like a baked Alaska as a dessert, such an odd old timey dish. But my lord, I'm glad I ordered it here. Closed with a grappa to cut through the sensory overload from dinner, it brought the meal to a perfect close. Service is an under appreciated skill and aspect to dining, and warrants additional mention. This isn't a restaurant that hangs nice curtains and charges out the nose for the pretense. When you dine here you're really cared for, guided and advised if requested, empty dishes don't linger in your face, you're never looking around for someone, nor is there someone intrusively hovering in your space. After going to so many places that try, it is a treat to eat somewhere that actually delivers.

Classic steakhouse: great food/drinks, swanky ambiance, and stellar service! My favorite things from my meal: blackberry cosmo, scallop special, stuffed hash browns (all absolute must-try), and the lemon icebox pie (seriously one of the best desserts I've had... think key lime pie but lemon). All around 5 out of 5 highly recommend!

We love Starr restaurants so we were very excited to try Butcher and Singer on our visit to Philly. Dinner far and above exceeded our expectations. The decor is grand yet still inviting, the food was expertly prepared, and the service was some of the best we've enjoyed in years. (Shout out to Dirk for making the evening not only delicious but memorably fun!) The stuffed hash brown is cravable. The portions were generous and the proteins were perfectly prepared. The cocktails were also balanced and delicious. We will return asap!

Looking for an elevated dining experience in Philly? Look no further than Butcher and Singer, arguably one of the most beautiful restaurants in the city from a structural and architectural standpoint, there's a reason it's been on just about every "best of" list. I had my first experience over the weekend for a special night out with one of my girlfriends, and was really impressed from start to finish.I screwed up and forgot to book a reservation, but we decided to just show up and try our luck at the bar. This worked in our favor as we got to enjoy the full Butcher and Singer experience from a table in their cocktail lounge space, which is full service and was actually completely open when we walked in on a Friday night at 6:56pm. These unreserved tables filled in quite quickly, and the only hiccup of the night was trying to get a server over to us after we grabbed our seats. I went back up to the host stand after we waited for about 10 minutes, then after that point we waited awhile longer for someone to come over with a menu. Not enough to dock a star, but I found it surprising for a place that should seemingly have very clear and polished FOH systems in place. After this though: pure perfection. We each ordered a French 75 from our server Ricky who was a complete rockstar all night long. He gave great suggestions and was super attentive for our whole meal. We then put in our order (we were splitting everything) which one could essentially title "The basic bitch's guide to ordering dinner at a steakhouse"+ Caesar salad+ NY strip steak+ Creamed spinach+ Mashed potatoes+ Glasses of Côtes du Rhône and ChiantiEverything really was perfectly executed, presented, and priced for the quality. You are not going to have a cheap night but you will leave FULL, tipsy, and happy. This amount of food was too much for two people, but I regret nothing and wish I could have tried one of their many tasty desserts. I will absolutely be back, even just to the bar before a night out to take in the gorgeous space and feel transported away from 15th street for a brief moment. Thank you B&S for the wonderful evening and hospitality!

As far as elegant restaurants go, this place has to be among the finest in Philly. The interior is very classy. I'm a huge fan of dim lighting and circular booths. The staff is top notch and on top of everything. The food in general is very good. Overall, this is an excellent choice for a special occasion. One thing that I did notice was that our server was slightly less engaged than others nearby. At the table behind ours, the server detailed the specials a bit better and provided more recommendations throughout the dinner. Our server was good, but the difference was noticeable. Escargot - I'm a big fan of escargot and these were great. Sizzling in butter and garlic, these went nicely onto the toasted bread. Very savory. I only wish there were more. Aged Strip Steak (Special) - The steak was good. However, at its price, I was a little let down. I probably would have been happier with the filet mignon. The aged strip was perfect in some areas, but a bit too charred in other areas. I like a nice crisp on my steak, but the charred flavoring really overpowered at times and distracted from an otherwise nice steak. I did not order a sauce to accompany given it was the chef's special, but I probably would have preferred it in this instance. Overall, the seasoning was spot on and the meat was incredibly tender. Stuffed Hash Brown - This was delicious. The exterior was crisp and well fried , while the interior was featured a light cheese sauce interwoven between the hash brown shreds. Nicely done -- very much recommend. Broccolini - Nicely seasoned and topped with garlic chips, the broccolini is a solid side. This was a good dish -- not much more to say. Chocolate Fudge Cake - It's as good as you can get. Absolutely delicious and large! I couldn't finish it all myself by the end of the night. If you like chocolate, I fully recommend this one. Biscuits - When your waiter comes back around asking if you would like more biscuits, DON'T be modest. These are literally the best biscuits I have ever had. I could eat them all day long. With the sweet cream butter, they are addictive. Perfectly flaky, easily pulled apart, fluffy, and buttery -- truly well done on these. Value: 4/5Quality: 4/5Quantity: 5/5Service: 4/5Atmosphere: 5/5

Walking in here and you're immediately greeted with a wonderful dark and cozy ambiance reminiscent of the early half of the 20th century. Decor and music all match the theme, and the mural of dogs overlook all diners. The wine and spirit menu is very extensive, and the cocktails are premium. The sidecar was actually 10/10 blended and tasted exactly as it should. The biscuits served to start come with delicious honey butter and are quite tasty, warm, and flaky. Steak was cooked beautifully and was a high end chop. The blue cheese melted on top added great savory flavor to complement the steak. The sides were great as well. Nicely cooked sprouts and very buttery, creamy mashed potatoes. Do recommend the baked Alaska though it is very sugary! Quite an uncommon dessert and they do it well. Nice end to the meal. Overall a very tasty and memorable dinner. Thanks

What a time. Reservation was easy to make (we had a part of 8). We celebrated our parents 50th wedding anniversary. The restaurant is 50s themed, dim lighting and old fashioned. The service is top tier. They bring biscuits w/ honey butter to the table and they were delicious (we asked for another basket full). I had the salmon Brussels sprouts and baked potato. All the sides are shareable. The potato comes with toppings on the sides. The food is amazing. It is flavorful, made to perfection and seasoned well. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Although pricey this is a must try.
