I have only really liked Matcha flavor desserts in Philly's Chinatown establishments so I was hesitant at first but I am so glad I gave their Matcha flavor a try because it was phenomenal. It was creamy, firm, slightly sweet and had a distinct Matcha taste and smell. Must try if you are a Matcha lover!! Their single scoop is a good size too. I hope they include Pistachio in their rotation at the Somerset Split location because that's something I want to try next.

Best ice cream I've had thus far in Philly. Grabbed a shake on my way to the airport. I have no shame...I finished it by the time I arrived to the terminal. Located inside the Reading Terminal Market, Bassett is family owned and has been in business at this spot for 4 generations, since 1892. There are several options to enjoy, cones, cup, shakes and pints to take home. The staff was helpful with suggestions but I made my own creation. A vanilla shake with chocolate swirls inside and caramel drizzle on top. That was some real tasty goodness. The line moved fairly quick and the atmosphere was great.

Fast and friendly service! I ordered the butter pecan ice cream in a cup, my husband ordered a strawberry milkshake. The ice cream was wonderful and my husband's milkshake tasted of fresh, authentic strawberries. Definitely recommended for a sweet treat in Philly

Tried a few samples, but didn't want anything. If this didn't have the history or great location, I don't think they would be in business. Portions are huge. Kids scoop was enough for me. I read about it and asked for the smallest size, but the worker didn't mention it. Customer service was nonexistant.

Friendliest staff. Allergy accommodating. Fantastic flavors. Highly recommend Dark Chocolate or Mint Chip with the sprinkle waffle cone. The countertop is inviting for conversation with others, and the history of Bassetts is always the talking point. Love it here!

When visiting the Reading Terminal, this was a must for me. What makes Bassetts special is that it is America's oldest ice cream company. To be honest, I first learned about Bassetts when I was watching a Korean movie. Apparently, they have ice cream shops located in China, South Korea, and Taiwan. Obama has also been here. I came here in the morning and had it as my breakfast. The worker was not the most pleasant. She seemed as if she didn't want to be there. A cup with 2 scoops is $7. It was too much ice cream for me. I wished I could order 1 scoop. I went with pistachio and pomegranate blueberry crunch (chocolate chips). I liked how the pistachio had actual pistachio in it. The ice cream was good but not memorable.

Good ice cream but don't order the quart. They manually pack it so it'll be half empty.Get a pint or smaller.

tl;dr scoops don't come cheap at this historical Philly ice cream parlor -- expect an expensive-yet-skimpy portion of good-not-great ice creamBassetts Ice Cream is a Philadelphia icon, dating back to 1861 (before even Reading Terminal Market was established). L.D. Bassett used to churn the ice cream by hand at home, and he eventually moved his operation into RTM in 1892. Bassetts is now RTM's final remaining original merchant, currently in its sixth generation of family ownership. Bassetts shows no signs of slowing down though, and it recently even hosted special guest President Obama for a scoop. The shop is pressed against the west wall of the market -- Bassetts is one of the select RTM vendors to boast an outdoor window. Warm, industrial lighting fixtures and a wooden ice cream cone hang around the retro, all-caps sign. The white-tiled shop is accented by pops of lapis and gold, and the short white-marble counter is decked with commercial-grade napkin and utensil dispensers. Four contiguous, built-in screens display Bassetts' menu, and the walls are decked with Bassetts merch. My sister and I were eager for dessert after lunch in RTM, and ice cream is always our go-to -- so one of Philly's most iconic scoops shops seemed like a solid bet. We were one of just a few parties in line during weekend lunch, and the staff patiently gave us plenty of samples. We shared 3 Scoops in a waffle cone. The vanilla-base Moose Tracks was surprisingly heavy on the fudge and peanut butter cups -- far more than most grocery store brands. Meanwhile, the Chocolate Fudge Brownie was expectedly chocolate-forward with plenty of dense brownies; it was the surprise favorite of our group. Lastly, Bassetts' signature Coffee Fudge Truffle (formerly known as Guatemalan Ripple) had smooth mocha ice cream with coffee-filled truffles and fudge swirl -- it reminded me of a coffee version of Moose Tracks. The scoops were small-to-moderately sized, and the triple scoop barely extended beyond the equally petite waffle cone. The ice cream was enjoyable (if not standard), but the poor value ($10 for a triple scoop) was eyebrow-raising -- especially considering that Bassetts pints may be found at local stores for about $4. Nevertheless, for a bite of Philly dessert history, Bassetts is worth a try at least once.

My husband and I recently visited Bassetts Ice Cream in Philadelphia, this has a lot of charm and history. Bassett's is America's oldest ice cream company, serving up scoops since 1861. The legacy alone makes it worth a visit for anyone exploring the city.We had a cup with two flavors--Salted Caramel Pretzel and Blueberry Pomegranate. The Salted Caramel Pretzel had a nice sweet-and-salty mix. The Blueberry Pomegranate was refreshing. Overall, it was a good experience combined with historical significance and atmosphere make it a cool stop in Philly. Definitely worth checking out if you're into trying a piece of Philadelphia's culinary history!
