I'm not an expert on South Indian cuisine, but we had a wonderful experience at Amma's. The food is delicious and the portions are generous, particularly for the price. We'll definitely be back!

Food 3/5, Service 3/5, Value 3/5, Ambience 3/5We were excited to find a place in Philly that served dosa! We came with a group of 4 people. Services was generally just okay and they were slow to take our order and refill our waters. We all ordered the masala dosa. Dosa was a good size and the chutney and masala tasted good! The dosa was also reasonably priced. The downside was that the dosa was really not very crispy, which for me is one of the most important parts of dosa. Overall may come back if I'm craving dosa, but dosa was just average compared to other places I've been to!

Service was good. Food is OK to me but probably better for other people. I did not know what to expect. My daughter started recently dating in Indian kid so I said screw it. Let's go see what the food is like. I guess he's north Indian and this was south Indian food. it was good, just not my cup of tea

So delicious, definitely the best dosa I ever had. Mansi was wonderful, I overheard her service to the table next to us and she was so thorough and really nice in explaining everything to the gentlemen. We didn't feel rushed out anything. All the chutneys were delicious. My dosa was so crispy and so good. It was a bit spicy but not overly spicy. Can't wait to come back.

Amma's is always a safe & great choice. This was my fifth time coming here and I have been coming here since they initially opened. I will say... i think their dishes have gotten smaller. But it's a good size for a single person! The spice level in the dishes are serious! It is a byob and they also serve beer. Definitely make a reservation if you're coming in a large group or on the weekend

Still tasty.Dosas are the best still, everything else is more standard/average.Small tables and space of the popularity. Lots of waiters so pretty easy to flag someone down if you're in a rush

Excellent food place for a great price! This restaurant is often listed as one of the best food places in Philly - alongside higher end dining establishments with a much larger price tag. The restaurant feels very nice and fancy and intimate - and really is worth the hype. The best part is that it's still fairly affordable - especially when you compare it to other popular/highly touted Philly spots. You can call ahead for a reservation but we saw others were able to get a table fairly quickly (even after an Eagles game). On the toast tab, they automatically add a tip so no need to do that (even though the receipt itself has an option for additional tip). Now onto the food! The mango lassi comes in a bottle instead of a glass - but it was still delicious. It tastes far more strongly of yogurt/milk than mango - unlike other mango lassis I've had. The mango flavor is still there but it's more subtle and feels far less artificial. The samosas and pakodas were also very tasty - and the chutneys that accompanied paired perfectly. Someone ordered a dosa and they are *huge* - he ended up eating only half of it because the serving was so large. I've never seen a dosa that large before - so if you like dosas, this is the perfect place for you. I ordered their veg meal and it was excellent. The seasoning is done perfectly - you can really taste all the flavors blending together in perfect harmony in which no one spice overtakes everything else. If I'm in the Philly area again, I'm definitely going to visit here again.

The worst Indian food I've ever had in my life. I thought the New Delhi Indian Restaurant in Philly was bad, this is worse. I really don't wanna waste my energy with this review but here we go, it seems that they are packed only because they happen to be in the middle of the city. But there isn't another one on South Street that goes simply by the name: "Indian Restaurant" I prefer their yummy food better. So this place I ordered lamb saagwala. That thing had so much yogurt, you couldn't taste the greens or the curry. No hint of spice but sweetness. The banana thing was worse, it said plantain and I thought it was sweet plantain, I even asked the waitress, and she said yes, plantain... That thing was raw banana, dipped in flour and fried. Hated it! This place has so much regular finger food... I thought for a minute it wasn't an Indian restaurant. So much going on and noisy... you would have to scream just so someone next to you could hear you.

Came here on a Saturday afternoon and was seated very promptly, which I was surprised by. We ordered the spinach and onion pakoda for starters and it came with this green chutney and a dusting of chaat masala on top. It was really fresh and crispy and the portion was huge! We each got dosas; I had the Mysore masala dosa. I had higher hopes but found that the masala inside wasn't that flavorful. I felt it was overpriced for the taste but the portion was hefty. The ambience was fine but there were a lot of people going in and out which was interesting. Overall a good experience, maybe a little overpriced but portions were sizeable.
