Great place to grab a nice pour over coffee on the go. All outside seating. No croissants on the menu that I could see.

Our last day in SD and yesterday we noticed this local shop just down the block from our hotel. It was busy on a Monday morning, so we thought we'd give it a shot today. It's a cute outdoor place at the bottom of a condo building. The menus are on the glass door that they can close up at night. W ordered a Carmel almond milk latte and I chose their vanilla cinnamon non-fat latte. Both decaf. I forgot to ask to go light on the sugar-free vanilla syrup, but the drink was perfect. Not too sweet and I love the combo of the vanilla and cinnamon. The coffee itself is five-star worthy! The food was good but not great for the price, hence our four-star review. I had the Tourmaline, husband had the Pt Loma. My open-faced sandwich had avocado mash with arugula and heirloom tomatoes drizzled with olive oil on sourdough toast. Price was $10.50. It wasn't bad and loved the toms, but needed more avo---and slices would have been better or chunkier mash--either way, more avo needed. I could barely taste it over the arugula. W's toast had two medium cooked fried eggs on jalapeno sourdough toast with arugula. We asked to have to avo removed from his toast. It was decent, but a little dry with no cheese or avo. We didn't think to ask to replace the avo with cheese, so our bad. The outdoor area is nice and relaxing. Lots if neighborhood folks with their dogs. We did have some excitement as a resident on the 13 floor (16 if you count the businesses) threatened to jump. He and his lady were having an argument. We called 911 cuz the guy was literally throwing his legs over the balcony... and at one point just before the police arrived, he was full-body standing on the outside of the balcony with us and many others yelling at him to stop. He didn't jump, thank goodness! But the cops had to close down the coffee shop until they could secure him. As I write, it's still a situation over there. I hope the man gets the help he needs. Sorry for the coffee shop for their lost revenues. So, go support them!

Okay forgive me if I'm ignorant of some hipster trend but is coffee not supposed to have flavor anymore? This is the second Achilles location I've been to, and for some reason I was equally shocked both times at the quality of the drinks and food. The employees seem friendly and that must be how they maintain good reviews because, holy hell, I felt like I was drinking coffee machine waste mixed with flat soda. This time I ordered whatever their version of an espresso tonic is called, and the Tourmaline, which is described essentially as avocado toast with tomatoes. The draw of an espresso tonic is that it's loud. It's in your face. It's highly carbonated, it's bitter and tastes strongly of espresso, and preferably a little sweet and sour from some sort of citrusy simple syrup. It should be perfectly balanced. Not only is their version of the drink made with cold brew, but it's also apparently not made with Topo Chico, the barista's mineral water of choice. So it's just weak in every possible way. To reiterate, I felt like I was drinking coffee machine waste mixed with flat soda. And now you'll be thinking about this review while trying it, if you dare.If it was just this one drink that missed the mark, I wouldn't be going off in this review, but the first drink I tried at Achilles was a flavored latte of some sort, and I can't even remember what it was supposed to taste like because it didn't have much flavor, coffee or otherwise. And what's up with their food? After the first location I'd been to I thought "that kinda seemed thrown together," but after this time, it was confirmed.Look at the attached picture--it's just sliced tomatoes sitting on a bed of spinach, supported by (literally) one whole- and two half-pieces of toast with avocado spread. The quality of the ingredients wasn't bad but could you imagine going to a place that serves salad and having them prepare your salad like this? It reminds me of that one episode of SpongeBob where they're trying to sell this literal image as salád (I just checked and the episode is called Bossy Boots).I don't care that I live right next door, I'm not coming back. Best wishes to the employees tho.

A cute little coffee shop within walking distance of our hotel! We wanted to try somewhere local. There was no line when we went about 8:30am on a Saturday. The baristas were not really friendly and didn't look happy to be there other than when they were bantering back and forth making orders. The menu is quite expansive and would be great for any coffee connoisseur. I had the Finest City - cold brew with cinnamon, vanilla, and cream. It was great! My husband had the El Cortez - cold brew with cardamom, brown sugar, mint, and cream. He loved it!

Place is clutch as it's right outside my apartment complex. Never too long of a line albeit I usually go around 9am during the weekdays and 8am on Saturdays. Quick and friendly staff. Usually they always ask me about my dog or my outfit or generally how my morning is going. Last time I came here I ordered the Finest City Cold Brew which consist of Cinnamon, Vanilla Syrup, Heavy Whipping Cream. Made with their Nitro Cold Brew.Solid combo of flavors that always gets me energized. Not a fan of their tea selection but they have smoothies and my next stop there I'm going to order the Broadway as it is a Protein Smoothie - Pitaya, Acai, Spinach, Peanut Butter, Almond Milk, Banana. Moderately priced. Really it's about convenience of the place rather than cost and quality. For that, I give it a 3 star.

Cute little coffee shop located in the bottom of an apartment complex, The Rey. Great service, friendly staff and delicious food. The coffee too. We enjoyed our short walk from our timeshare to this shop. Sat outside, there is no inside seating here, and enjoyed the morning.

Love this coffee spot! This one at the bottom of The Rey is especially cute with it's storefront and outdoor seating area. Their coffee is excellent and love the variety of pour-overs, cold brews and hot/cold lattes. Today in particular I tried the iced honey cinnamon latte and was very pleased. We also got the special which was the lavender cold brew, which was a little strong on the lavender flavor but otherwise good. As for food, I love their sandwiches and after getting your food and coffee it is nice to sit in the sun in their seating area and people watch. Service is always friendly and you can tell they take pride in making the coffee. I've asked for many a recommendation and they are always so helpful. Downtown is lucky to have quite a few Achilles coffee locations.

After coming here for the last month I think it's hit or miss depending on who's working. Recently, the order I called in wasn't ready at the expected time, so I waited an extra 10 mins (like 30 mins total to make 2 lattes) and the latte ended up tasting like just milk. I had ordered a vanilla latte with brown sugar syrup and couldn't taste vanilla or brown sugar. I'll probably try my luck here again but if you come- don't be surprised if they deliver a disappointing drink, this location tends to be inconsistent.

I usually love this place, but I mostly get their espresso lattes. Today I tried their matcha latte with hazelnut syrup and was disappointed when I was basically given a cup of iced milk with vanilla syrup and a sprinkle of matcha. I didnt mind the mix up in the syrup I asked for, but I did try asking for more matcha. I was ignored by the newer staff making the drinks so I asked the cashier. She looked annoyed, and did add more matcha, but it was still really light. I understand its tedious to have to go out of your way to correct something you did not make, but people are not paying $7 for a cup of milk. Do not get their matcha lattes.
