OMG I ate the best baklava in Houston! When the doors of the food mart opened, the aroma that hit me was insane! I didn't bother to look at any of the products on the shelves. My nose literally led me to the back of the food mart where the bakery is. I saw trays and trays of different kinds of baklavas in the display cases. I got greedy (as usual when it comes to sweet food) and asked for eight different kinds of baklavas. The baklavas were sold by per pounds. Luckily I brought my Turkish friend along which helped in the communication part, and I was able to get a few pieces of each kind. The baklavas weren't too sweet, and they were so awesomely good. If I have to choose one favorite (trust me, it is tough to have one favorite only), it would have to be the cold baklavas with hazelnut or pistachios. Eat them straight out from the fridge is just aaahhhh... Diyarbakir Burma with pistachio had a good texture contrast that was so good. I also got the rice pudding (forgot to take a pic because I gobbled it down before I remember to take a pic) which came in a small rectangle aluminum tray. The rice pudding was baked well, and it wasn't overly sweet. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Other than sweets, the bakery sells breads too. That would be the food item l will purchase on my next visit.

I'm aca with it if you want to go here by yourself, but I wish you'd take me with you. We're talking about the mother of all Turkish grocery stores... and the father too. They have all the Turkish stuff, it's small but it's packed and loaded, prices are mid to high but damn it's amazing if you're over here from Turkey and miss your home goodies.Combined with the Istanbul Truck on Westheimer near Hillcroft, this is all the Turkishness you'll ever need.

Only a week has passed since my return from Istanbul, and I already missed the city dearly. To add to the sorrow, I was sad that my small stock of Turkish delight was already depleted, but happiness returned when I discovered this Turkish grocery shop. The small Acacia Mart was like my happy flashback of Istanbul!Right off I-69 near Beltway 8, Acacia Mart is almost like a grocery store that was plucked from Turkey and placed in Houston. Here, you will find many authentic Turkish goods (many of which are imported from Turkey) ranging from Turkish tea to Turkish delight! Despite the small size of the store, the selection was nonetheless impressive given its niche and sufficient for me give my dad a brief tour of my culinary experience in Istanbul with actual samples. What's even more impressive is that even though the products were imported for an under-served demographic, the prices are reasonably cheap! For instance, a 1-lb box of Hazer Baba rose-flavored Turkish delight was only $6, which is almost half of the $11 tag on Amazon. Who said you must empty your wallets to try international goods?Whether you are looking for familiar Turkish goods like me or simply browsing for a piece of Turkish culture in Houston, Acacia should be your stop! A grocery store cannot bring back the grandeur of Hagia Sophia or the festivity of Galata Bridge, but nonetheless I will know where to return when I need a real-life reminder of Istanbul.
