858 Burger

Absolutely delicious! Loved the vibe, food and location, right in the heart of La Jolla. The 858 burger changed my life 10/10!

I first noticed this place a month ago when we drove by on our way to Chin's. Then yesterday, I saw a post on Instagram that made it look pretty tasty so I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the experience was underwhelming.The fries were bland and lacked any seasoning at all, and the house-made ranch was...disappointing--I'd advise skipping it altogether. I ordered the classic burger WITHOUT pickles, but they still added them, which affected the taste. Not a fan of that pickle flavor!The onion rings were the only highlight of the meal, crispy and flavorful. I also ordered a cookies and cream milkshake, but after finishing my burger and several reminders that I hadn't yet received my shake, I went up to the counter to request a refund and Instead of giving me that refund, the cashier went ahead and just made the shake. To add to the frustration, my wife "accidentally" spilled her Sprite all over me because of the cheap cups they use. And to top it off, someone thought it was okay to park their golf cart in the access area of the handicapped spot where I was parked. Being handicapped myself, I had to track the person down to move it.Overall, this experience has left a bad taste in my mouth (pun intended). The portions were very small and the flavors were meh for the price. I don't think I will be returning. The lesson here? NEVER trust an Instagram recommendation--those idiots don't know anything.

858 Burger (named after the area code for La Jolla) has taken over the space where a short lived burger vendor had operated in the village of La Jolla. The suite was connected to an empanada business sharing the same main entrance and restroom. On-site parking was limited to a couple of spaces while the dining area had eight countertop seats adjacent to a window and enough tables to hold another couple of dozen diners.Three types of smashburgers and five sides were the savory menu offerings. Milkshakes, a chocolate chip cookie, and mini churros were the sweet treats. I picked a Classic smashburger with sweet potato fries for my meal. The burger was a beef patty dressed with American cheese, grilled onions, pickles, and thousand island sauce on a buttered brioche bun. The patty had crispy edges around the perimeter which was good. That being said, I thought the featured burger of the predecessor was a better product.The real disappointment was the sweet potato fries. They were soggy inside the cardboard cup and not worth $4.50 for the amount given. The service was okay as the wait to receive my food wasn't too long. The menu prices were similar to the previous business so that was a wash. I rated my experience at a three star level for 858 Burger.

They just opened for business so I get it. Probably still working out the kinks but I was disappointed considering all the hype this place has gotten. To start with the pros, the kids working here are so sweet, the vibe is cute, and the fries were good! Well seasoned and a nice thin cut.But the cons consisted of them being out of their chocolate shake (but had vanilla...not sure how that works) and the burger was lackluster. Not what I was expecting when I ordered the "Classic" (Buttery brioche bun, beef patty, melted American cheese, thinly sliced grilled onions, pickles, 1000 island sauce). It was dry, cold, and had a plastic like texture on the cheese.Maybe it was because I ordered take out and didn't dine in. Some burgers just don't travel well but I only live 7 mins away. Hoping to give this place another shot since it's suppose to be curated by a chef from a two Michelin-starred restaurant but not sure if I will when preexisting burger shops in LJ are solid choices.

This place was very disappointing...I don't see why there's so many raving reviews. The burgers were mid, basic smashed burger with a weird chili jam that I was not a fan of. The dirty fries were kinda gross, not sure what kind of cheese was used but it felt like fake cheese? Like canned cheese? I do not recommend the dirty fries at all. Overall, my experience here was okay. The restaurant was clean and workers were nice but the food wasn't good at all though.

Pretty solid place. It is way better than Classic Burger which it replaced. I had the 858 burger and dirty fries. The patty was great. I really liked the onion-bacon jam they used as well. It added sweetness and smokiness to the burger but still didn't overpower the flavor of the beef. I think the burger would have been perfect with a little more acid to cut through the sweetness and fattiness though. Dirty fries were okay. The fries themselves were solid. I think the cheese sauce was a little much and the onions in the other sauce could have been a bit smaller and better dispersed. If I get fries the next time, I think I would get normal fries. But the burger is where this place shined.

Great burgers and nice and simple menu.Service is fast too. Place is very clean.All my friends loved it.

The 858 burger was fantastic. The smash patties were juicy, crunchy on the outside, and the jam paid a sweet compliment to the burger. Sweet potato fries were also amazing and the homemade sauces! This will be a staple for the La Jolla community.

Great burgers, great onion rings, friendly staff. No brainer since the prior establishment here set the bar and now 858 continues the quality with their wonderful burger experience. Love what they're doing, love the burgers and I'm shouting from the mountain top regarding the onion rings. New name, new crew, new twists and still...deliciousness at this very same address.

Came here last week after trying the shake & mini churros which were really good. So decided to come again to give the burgers a try. The burgers were good, juicy & good size. The onion rings were very good & crispy, the dirty fries were good but basically a copy cat of in n out animalstyle fries. Now ... the wait on the shakes ... when I ordered my food at 645pm she said it was going to be 20 minutes.. I NEVER got my shake .. when I went to the counter to ask what was the delay she said it was because she had to take orders plus make the shakes .. after an hour .. I just asked for a refund for my shakes .. yet when no one was ordering I didn't see her make any shakes .. ordered a pizza from Pizza on Pearl at the same time and I got my pizza before the shake... which was again ... never .. .. not coming again... apart from the service it was overpriced .. $85 was my total !!
