Vernie's Hamburger House

We made a pit stop in Hayes on our roadtrip from Denver to Kansas City earlier this year. We found Vernie's while looking for a lunch spot and were not disappointed.The restaurant has a very family oriented, retro vibe. The food was inexpensive and delicious. I would recommend the corn fritters!

Great Hamburgers, great homemade pie, Friendly, personable service. You can tell they use better quality hamburger meat than the chains. We had hamburgers, lemon meringue pie, and coconut meringue pie.The ambiance was diner-like, not a place to celebrate a promotion or anniversary, but we weren't looking for that.Love supporting local businesses like this!

I've been to this quaint mom n pop hamburger joint once. It was a slow day. Atmosphere was 1950s. Server was right on top of things. Prompt and polite. The cheese burger was like dad made. The milkshake was terrific. The only minus was the tiny restrooms. All else 5 stars.

Stopped here on a road trip and the food was great. The staff was friendly, the service was fast and the restaurant was very clean. Loved the map they had to pin where you were from. It was a fun touch.

Try the Philly Cheesesteak Burger. The onions, red and green peppers are grilled to perfection, and the pepper jack cheese blends perfectly. The fries are good, and fried pickle chips are great! I tried a butterscotch shake, and it was very, very good! Great food. Local tradition.

We were a little disappointed after reading all the great reviews. The shakes and onion rings were very good. The burgers were nothing special. The fries and tots were under seasoned but cooked properly. We won't likely make this a stop on our frequent journeys through Hays.

We were told by friends that travel the 70 freeway often to make a stop at this place on our way to Kansas City. Thank you to them because it was well worth our time and money. The burgers were served with very fresh lettuce and tomato along with pickles. The onion rings were a real winner in my book. The place had a clean restroom, the service was friendly. We were going to stop by on our way back home, but they are closed on Sunday and Monday. Sorry we missed you on our trip home.

Small inside, but don't let that ruin your time here! This is the best food I've ever gotten from somewhere like this, great service too, the staff were nice and at a good volume to not be drowned out by everyone else in the building.

A great family restaurant with excellent food, great service, very clean, friendly and generous portions! We try to stop at Vernie's Hamburger House every time in Hays! A local favorite as well, for good reason!
