It must have been during COVID, when I started watching a lot of cooking videos on YouTube, that I first learned of the existence of birria, the Mexican pot roast that is often served in taco form, stuffed with melty cheese into fresh corn tortillas, grilled and served with consommé for dipping. Some time later a friend of mine took me to La Chona and I finally got the chance to try the stuff -- and I was mad that it had taken me so long to discover it! Bear in mind this is the only place I have ever tried birria, but I find what they serve here so extraordinarily delicious that it's hard for me to imagine it being done much better. The only mistake I made the first time was ordering three birria tacos and wolfing them all down at once; they are VERY filling and two would have been plenty, especially since I was having chips, frijoles and salsa on the side.I've been back three or four times now and every single visit is a treat. The wait staff is on point, the place is decorated festively and always kept tidy despite being busy every time I go in, and the kitchen crew absolutely knows their stuff. Highest recommendation!

Chefs have changed and the food is not quite as good. Prices on the menu have risen a lot. We still love their sopa de frijoles and the bistec platter, but we don't come here like we used to.

Messed up my order and when I called to let them know my order was wrong the rude manager hang the phone up on me as I was telling what I ordered. Then I drove back to the restaurant and the rude manager wasn't trying to give my money back. She tried to remake my order but I didn't want it after how hostile she was acting, and the fact I had to drive 25 minutes back and then I was going toHave to wait another 15 to 20 minutes to to replace my order wasting my time!!!!!! Would not recommend They care more about your Money and not satisfying customers !!!!

We thought we've tried every Mexican restaurant in Wichita so when we heard about Taquería La Chona we got excited. It was a great afternoon to try a new place and support local!Let me start off by saying the staff was very friendly and so helpful with their menu. We started with the homemade guacamole and chips Now the Coctel de Camarones (Mexican Shrimp Cocktail/Soup) was my FAVORITE! OR maybe itwas the Shrimp and Lengua street tacos?! Jon had the Alambres (grilled bistec, chicken, shrimp, onions, tomatoes, jalapeño peppers and melted cheese served with rice and beans and corn tortillas) and by the end of our meal we couldn't move! I will be back because I wanted to try the Menudo. It looked so good! Again, we feel so very fortunate that we live in this great city! #eatlocal #SupportICT #supportict #eatout #mexicanfood #foodie

No alchol served but that's okay we came for tacos and loved the food. Our waiter was awesome and the cooks had food out fast. The store was inviting and comfortable too! This was first time there but we will be regulars now!

8/8/2024: I'm really disappointed to be doing this, but I have to revise my recommendation of this restaurant. First of all, the do still have the best tasting tacos in town. However, last fall there was an incident where the health department cited a dozen or so violations. This concerned me, so I had not been back since then. Finally today, I decided to give them another chance.theyve continued to improve the restaurant but as we are sitting at a table adjacent the kitchen, a cockroach ran down the wall next to us. Then, when the waitress brings out the ticket, there is now a surcharge for paying with credit card. Honestly, I'd probably have not mentioned the surcharge if I weren't twisted up on the cockroach. I can't go back again.8/11/2020:Holy moly! This place is gooooood! I tried the Birria and Campechanos ranchero taco. This has to be the best taco I've ever had in Wichita. Tacos served with a large chunk of lime, grilled jalapeno and grilled onion. Service is good. Owner went Above and Beyond to greet me and check on food. Nice atmosphere. No doubt I will be back, often!

Best Mexican food I have had in the states. Service was great, drinks were kept full, portions were big enough grown men couldn't finish it

Went for the first time last night and was thoroughly impressed. The food was amazing, we tried the barbacoa and the chicken tacos. They were very filling and tasted great! We wanted to try the birria tacos but only got two bc they're around $4 each. They come so full of meat! Definitely worth the price point! I didn't dine in but did wait inside while my food was prepared, the place is clean and had a fantastic vibe! This is our new taco spot!

Excellent and authentic Mexican food with an emphasis on "el Sabor de Jalisco," the Mexican state that includes Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. You get a variety of salsas to mix in your own mini-molcajete to achieve the right balance for you; the menu is expansive and covers about everything you can imagine in traditional Mexican cuisine, and you know you're at the real deal when they've got every kind and style of protein you've ever heard of, and some you haven't. Enjoyed a variety of tacos, including a quite large ranchero, and the reports around the table were high marks for everything, from soup to seafood to dessert items. Wonderful selection of fresh juices made in house as well - I had the guava, very refreshing. A real treat, this unassuming place-- absolutely packed with happy customers. Servers were delightful all around.
