My meal at Public became a three-hour affair after we moved out onto the outdoor patio for after-dinner drinks. The outdoor space is strewn with twinkle lights surrounding a live band. It was kind of magical, with the lights and music. The glasses of wine helped, too. Public is a great place to visit during the warmer months when you can sit on the patio with a band. Before all of this, though, we had dinner indoors. Public offers pub food, but it's really good pub food. I was with a group, so we ordered a bunch of different appetizers: the pickle plate, spicy cauliflower, blue cornbread, and chef's charcuterie board. The spicy cauliflower was my favorite! I didn't expect to like it as much as I did, because I'm a little cauli-tired, to be honest. There's cauliflower everything everywhere. But this was spicy and savory and sweet. The cornbread -- made with blue corn -- was unusual but very good. It's served in a small skillet with butter and hot honey.Public makes Wichita-style pizza, so I ordered one of those. A personal pizza can serve two people easily, maybe even three. I got the Bassano, which is chicken, burrata, mozzarella and pesto. It was OK, but the crust was a little too bready for my taste. I guess that's what Wichita pizza is like. My pizza was my least favorite thing that I tased; I really loved all of the appetizers. This is the kind of American restaurant that most people will find something to order. They have sliders and pizza and wings and things. I think if I were you, I'd order an appetizer and a drink, and take it outside to the patio to enjoy. They have great appetizers here, and a great outdoor space.
