Welcome to the center of the United States! The premier Walsh Hotel awaits your visit.
Seriously, this is in the shower, and am slightly confused: Shampoo(ok), Conditioner(ok), Lotion(what the hell, why lotion?)

Landed at the airport at Chanute very late in the evening in early July 2016, having been prevented by weather from reaching Kansas City, and happy just to be on the ground. A couple of phonecalls later, and it had dawned on us that there was NO transportation to be hired in town. No taxi, no Uber, no city bus. Nothing. So there we were: a family with two young kids stranded in an unfamiliar town well after sunset with no way to get off the deserted airport. If I couldn't find a hotel that would shuttle us in, it would be a long, bleary walk in the dark. The manager of this hotel (Clayton, as I recall), was the friendly voice I needed to hear. As it turned out, none of the local hotels ran any kind of a shuttle, but I explained our situation, swallowed, and asked if there was any way he could arrange a ride for us. Whether out of the generosity of his nature, or a desire for a good Yelp review I can only guess, but this good man left his post at the front desk to drive out in his personal vehicle and rescue us. I really, really hope this review does not get him into trouble. On the way into Chanute, he gave us a late-night mini guided tour of the town, and drove us through McDonald's, which delighted our little girls (who hadn't had a proper meal since 7 AM Arizona time). So even if the hotel itself had been a dive, I would have had to give it a good review. BUT, when we got there, it turned out to be an unexpectedly cool old-time main street hotel, the kind with ornamented parapets and bronze lions standing guard on the curb, and an old hearth big enough to heat the odd-though-charming and comfortable lobby, which I will risk describing as Art Nouveau verging into Deco.Apparently what is now an Extended Stay goes back about a century, having been the town's very first hotel and a source of local pride, though eventually falling on hard times and going into eclipse before renovation leading up to the current ownership. The rooms, as some reviewers have indicated, reflect that long history; our room had a floor plan that would no longer be laid out in new construction, but which arguably compensates with that elusive quality called "character." Our room was actually two fairly small rooms that had been made into a mini suite, which worked very well for two adults and two kids. It was slightly tight, but we found everything to be perfectly clean and very comfortable. Although we were stranded, it all felt like an adventure, and like we were really on vacation and not just stuck somewhere. We sat on one of the beds and ate fast food, then crashed, so I can't say anything about TV. In the morning, we discovered we had a commanding view of the main street, and surrounding businesses. The included DIY breakfast was good: I had a waffle and the kids had cereal and fruit. The weather cleared and Clayton gave us a ride back to the airport (where we met the retired town dentist who flew over the Hump in WWII Indochina).Extremely thankful that this little gem exists in Chanute.

The struggle is real in this place, over the phone they definitely oversold this place. Everything is extremely dated and dirty, it seriously feels like it could be haunted. It has all the elements of a horror story rolled into one. Dirty phone, window sills(dead flies), wood flooring installed poorly, window ac unit sounds like it is on its last leg, and radiator that I seriously thought would be my untimely demise. The elevator. . . not all buttons work, can maybe fit 4 people(if lucky), probably all original since 1929. We stayed on the second floor, which has a balcony that hasn't seen any sort of care as it pertains to upkeep of furniture. The price changed after we had booked the room, we were quoted at $137(for two nights), and when we checked in it jumped to $167(I believe, I know it was in the $160's). Not impressed with this one, in need of some definite TLC to even remotely work as a hotel.

This is not your typical hotel. First it is like you stepped back 50 years in time. It has a nice feel though. When you check in it is in a weird little office, and when I came in tonight they were not here and called to have someone come up and check me in. But this is a small price for a room only costing $50.If you are traveling with children this would not be my stop. But staying by myself really the same room was nice. It felt like I was staying in my aunts spare bedroom not a hotel. I stay on the road a lot, and it was a nice stay. The beds are great, it feels like your at home. For $50 this is my hotel of choice in chanute.

OK, the good with the bad.I actually kind of like this place despite the service. We stayed here last summer, we had to go back to OK from K City and were slap happy tired. Plus we'd heard about the ghost stories and can't resist a historical building. Most of Chanute is old but run down and sad looking as opposed to really "historic." Depot is nice but only contains a library and museum we went to once. Once was more than enough but I digress. This hotel was, on the inside, old but old in a good historic way. Had that comfy feeling you see in old turn of the century photos of overstuffed homes. Then we waited to check in. And waited. And waited. Once someone showed up to give us the key we we went upstairs and saw the rooms named after famous Kansas natives. Our room was named for Vivian Vance, Ethel on "I Love Lucy!"It was small for two people but the bed was surprisingly comfortable. Clean and had the feel of staying in an aunt's spare room as opposed to a chain where they fold the toilet paper so you know they cleaned it. As for the ghost stories, I will admit, we awoke in the middle of the night to hear some wild banging in the bathroom, as well as what sounded like rustling around in the closet. No one was in the room on the bathroom side, and the racket from closet was enough to make me go out in my nightgown and see what was going on. There is a room on that side but a locked room/closet is there, probably a supply closet. No clue what was having fun in our closet but it made us glad we stayed! I'd stay again but someone said it was being redone or closed. Too bad if true, it's one of the only things we haven't cursed at in town.

Probably the worst hotel in Chanute. stayed for 2 nights and checked out even though the reservation was for a week. They make you pay ahead of time in case you realize that this place is actually not a good place to stay and you end up wanting to leave. The Super 8 is a little further south but it is such a better place. I wanted to get a 1 queen bed 'suite' non-smoking but they only have those available in smoking. So I had to settle with a 2 queen bed 'suite' in order for my room not to smell like cigarettes. Let me say that the rooms are tiny. I had 2 bedrooms each with a queen size bed in them. There was just enough space that I could barely move around. The bathroom was tiny and the shower could only fit one person. And when I say one person, that means if you are overweight, you will have a hard time moving around in there. The tv's are completely out-dated. One of the tv's was from the 80's while the other was from the late 90's. No flat screens or HDTV. Ok. No problem, I can live with that. But if you're going to give me a tv from the 80's, I'm going to need a remote for that because the remote that I had did not work for that one. Moving on, the closet was a decent size. The only problem was that when person on the floor above me showered, the water ended up pouring down into my closet. I had to quickly remove all of my clothes before they became soaked. They were still wet in the end. So if that's bad, then wait until this. I asked for a non-smoking room and I got a non-smoking room. However, the rooms around me were smoking and the smell of cigarettes from them would seep into my room while I was trying to sleep. Oh. And there were times when it wasn't only cigarette smoke I was smelling. There was definitely marijuana being smoked as well and this would seep into my room too.The only advantage that this hotel has is that it's located right downtown. However, besides that, there is no other redeeming qualities about this place. Go stay at the Super 8 further south. It's closer to a Walmart, fast food joints, etc. When I told the guys I was working with that I was staying here, they all cringed and told me that there was a more modernized Super 8 down the road. And the Super 8 is cheaper.

The only good things about this hotel are the cheap price, location (if you want to be in "downtown" Chanute, and the character. Otherwise, there's absolutely no evidence the rooms are cleaned between stays, or really with any regularity. There was dirt/grime and a shred of toilet paper along the wall where the toilet and sink sit. When I put down the white floor towel before taking a shower, immediately it had a few gray spots on it from picking up dust/grime. After the shower the bottoms of my feet were not completely dry and I picked up lots of small pieces of dirt when I walked into the bedroom. Had to use a towel to clean my feet before putting on socks. When I pulled back the comforter and sheets, there was a small potato chip on the sheets. Worst of all, the toilet seat had noticeable "etching" from bodily fluids on it. I suspect they were on there several days to have never come off with cleaning. Gross - make sure you hover ladies. I'm really not sure when the last time is my room had the sheets changed (no way a potato chip makes it through the wash) or cleaned, but I don't like living in other people's filth. For the price, the beds are OK. Not the worst I've ever had but certainly not close to what you get in something like a Hampton Inn for an extra $30 a night. If the rooms were actually ok, I might stay here again. But I can't deal with unknown dirt from others. There is a nice consignment shop across the street to the east if you do decide to stay here.

What an awful hotel. The TV didn't work. The phone to the lobby and out side didn't work. The mattress was OLD. It was dirty. At 3am a freight train went through town. When I checked out in the morning, had to wake the 'attendant' up to get a receipt.Breakfast was awful. McDonalds was A LOT better. Horrible Hotel.

I can't even give this hotel one star. I made a reservation at this hotel a week or two before our trip. When we arrived at the hotel to check in (we were on time), we were told that a family had come in for a funeral so they gave our room away. They asked us if a smoking room was ok. We said it was not. The two male workers then went upstairs to "check" the rooms and came back to tell us they put us in a smoking room anyway. When we got to the room the windows were so dirty you couldn't even see out of them and the room that they claimed was just remodeled was dirty. We didn't take showers in the morning because the bottom of the slower floor was covered in dirt. The drawers had bugs and an old Cheeto in them. To make matters worse, when I pulled the blanket up at night, it smelled like SERIOUS body odor. After checking myself, I realized it was the blanket that had never been washed. So, I pulled down the blanket and found dried blood as well as body hair on the sheets. This was THE most disgusting hotel experience I've ever had. To top it off, their free breakfast includes a freezer full of pre-made sandwiches that you get to heat up yourself. Nothing beats making your own breakfast after a night of sleeping in someone else's blood, body odor and hair.
