So, I'd keep your expectations in check when visiting Mushroom Rock State Park. It's a tiny park -- the smallest state park in Kansas at just 5 acres! But you get to see some interesting rocks. Some of these rocks really do look like mushrooms. We explored the park for a bit, but we were done after about 15 minutes. There's a short, easy trail on one side of the parking lot that takes you down to some sick rocks (that people have carved into and written things on, which I think looks cool but you might not). On the other side of the parking lot is a little area with more mushroom rocks; some of these are short enough to climb on, so kids might like these. There's a restroom here, but it's basically a port-a-potty hole in the ground, so if you can hold it, I'd suggest doing so.

This place is off the beaten path and I decided to take a minor detour on my trek across Kansas to get some exercise. This park is super small and basically one little mushroom shaped rock formation. There is no hike or real space to roam. It's definitely not worth the stop unless you're literally driving by it.

This was one of our stops on our cross country RV trip. It's nice to break up the drive, but I have to say, this place is not worth the stop. This park is tiny. There's a couple of rocks that look like mushrooms on the side of the road. It's definitely not worth driving out of your way for. I honestly don't understand how it's a state park. This wins the award for worst state I've been to. Don't waste your time.

This 5-acre park is definitely "off the beaten path" -- something like 30 miles off I-70 and then 2.6 miles up a dirt road. We were actually driving one of the Kansas "scenic byways" (Prairie Trail Scenic Byway) which passes Kanopolis State Park a few miles south of this park on KS Route 141. I was surprised to find 7 Yelp reviews when checking out the site. After passing the 1st park, we were watching for Mushroom Rock State Park when we saw a sign with an arrow pointing up a dirt road. There was no indication of how far up the road or anything and we almost turned back a couple of times because we weren't sure where we going. Then - 2.6 miles later - we spotted the Mushroom Rock State Park sign.As noted above, this is a very small (5 acre) state park but it has some great rock formations. There are two really good ones, one on the north side of the road and one across a small bridge on the south side of the road. There are a couple of picnic tables and a wide spot in the road for parking but little else. There is an outhouse that actually looks good from the outside but it's really the pits (pun intended) inside and I'd recommend avoiding it unless you're REALLY desperate.

I'll start with the pros.We drove up from wichita. Beautiful drive. The park itself is in between a bunch of cattle land so its quiet and peaceful. The rock formations are pretty and almost alien like granted the location. They have bathrooms which, although they are not top of the line, is nice when you are so far off the grid. It's free, and there's a sufficient amount of parking, free as well. That being said, this place is kind of a joke. There's approximately 5 to 10 rocks total and really only 2 worth seeing. The place is supposed to be 5 acres. I think that's a stretch and even if it is 5, the rocks are only in 2 select areas of less than an acre. All in all, glad we went and saw it but I wouldn't go back. It's not all it's hyped up to be. If you are near the area, go. Otherwise, don't worry about it.

We really like Mushroom Rock State Park and usually feel too rushed to stop. This time it was early afternoon so we decided take a drive by and hike a bit! It's only a short drive from the highway between Ellsworth & Salina and we feel it's well worth your time to stop. Not a large park as it is just the outcropping of the rocks that makes it unique. They actually look like mushrooms. It's part of the same rock outcropping that forms Rock City. The Mushrooms or pedestals are really examples of Hoodoos and are formed by the weathering & erosion of the Dakota Sandstone . It is the smallest State Park in Kansas. It's a nice family area with its trails, picnic tables and of course, rocks to climb on.

Who would have thought driving down an unpaved country road, one would come across rocks that look like mushrooms? Was I tripping? No, this is real! This unusual little park in the middle of nowhere is a really nice place to go for a picnic, just hang out, read a book, get away, etc. The rocks are actually limestone formations that over time wore down to pedestals on the bottom. Its far off the beaten path but worth the trip if anywhere nearby.
