Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie

Whaddyagonnasay? It's the Flint Hills! You're out on the open prairie, maybe a little bit elevated for view sake, and you're amongst historical markers. What's not to love?Found just off K-93 north of I-70 near Alma, the Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie is essentially a foothill with some switchback-style trails. Those trails are either gravel or mowed and are navigable for pretty much any age. There aren't any stairs but it's a gentle rise and might take a bit of an effort for young 'uns. All told, you might be able to squeeze two miles of walking if you encircle the base and ascend to the summit, and that's a fair amount of footsteps for a day trip. It's not really a 'hike'; it's more of a walk with incline. The trails are clean and well-kept, and pay attention to muddy spots in colder months as they can be slick and messy. Dogs are welcomed! Gotta keep them leashed and pick up after them, packing it in & out just like you would with anything else. Drive all the way past the signage and you can park at the 'trailhead'. On a clear day you can see for miles in 360° with an endless view of the Kansas prairie just as the settlers did, though they took fewer smartphone pics.It's easy to find, it's not really out of the way, and it's the beauty of the Kansas Flint Hills. Take an hour to enjoy!
