I left my place at 6 am, but I live just too far away to apparently be in time for the donuts. It's larger than I thought, but still just as country, in the best possible way. The hash browns were crispy. The omelet was good. I've had better, but I could see Don himself cracking the eggs, and that beats any chain or convenience. It's a local place to get your morning coffee and see a smiling face. You only find your way to Protection if you're a local or (like me) have a strong desire to not take the beaten path

Bought a second house in Coldwater and heard lots of great things about Don's in Protection. It was certainly busy and I know why! It was delicious! They have a menu of American diner items and some Mexican food. I opted for the taco salad and I'm so happy I did. Perfect portion and very tasty! I will definitely return and probably come earlier to avoid the crowds.

Really great quality food for such a small town. Family owned so the meals have a home cooked feeling. Great place to hangout for lunch/IceCream with some friends or drink some coffee. Inexpensive meals. Sales candy bars and what not at the register. Has private rooms for a family get together.

If you're traveling on 160, you've got to stop at Don's. We're just passing through back to Northwest Arkansas. Welcomed and served by the sweetest ladies. The food was phenomenal, a ton of options and all super well priced. Two of us ate full meals, with sides and got milkshakes all for $30. Feels like eating at grandma's kitchen, smells like it and tastes like it too. Don't skip this spot!

If you're passing through Protection, KS or any of the near by cities, I recommend stopping at this local diner. This place is just about as "American" as you can get. From the cook to the waiters to the patrons, this place was great! I got the steak fingers and my co worker got the chicken fried steak and we both were very pleased. If you're looking for a southern style home cooked meal, this is your place.5 Stars!PS. GET THE PIE! I got the peanut butter and it was to die for :)

This is exactly the kind of place you hope you will stumble on during a road trip in rural America. A small town diner where the locals spend 2 hours sitting around drinking coffee after they get their 50 cent (yes, that's right, 50 cent) homemade donuts for breakfast. It's the kind of place where the older gentlemen go right up to the coffee station, get their own coffee, then turn to the restaurant to see who else needs a refill before setting it back on the warmer. We were here for breakfast, and got 2 coffees, a milk, 7 donuts, a cinnamon roll, a full plate of biscuits and gravy, and a platter with an egg, bacon, toast, and hash browns and the total was only $16. I couldn't believe it. The biscuits and gravy were my favorite thing at the table- made with huge chunks of fresh sausage. It was delicious. Everyone else in our group devoured the donuts, but I thought they needed just a little more sugar in the dough. Not complaining, though, it's just a preference thing. My husband was in heaven reliving his childhood eating those donuts, as they were just like the ones made by an old Mennonite lunch lady at his school growing up. If you are just driving by then take the 1/2 mile drive off the highway to get yourself a donut to go- if there are any left.
