I live right around the corner so we used to frequent this place when the former family owned and ran it. It got sold and shortly started going downhill. Much better to walk to other end of the block and go to Ben Molls, those folks are friendly and cheaper prices (albeit limited wine selection).

They sell aviation gin. Nough said. The employee was friendly. 4 stars because the selection is on the limited side. However the fact you can grab the liquor yourself (in DC) is a plus

This is our local around-the-corner stop for wine and beer. The owners are very friendly and even started carrying a beer that I tried on vacation and loved - awesome place!

This is one of the best places to buy alcohol in Adams Morgan/Dupont/U Street area. Not only do they carry beer, wine AND liquor, the selection is surprisingly massive and the prices are about right for what you could consider a bottle shop. From chilled craft and microbrews to cases of Miller Lite cans, the supply is always high and the couple running the store couldn't be more pleasant or helpful. They are a staple in the neighborhood.Plus, they are now open until midnight Mon-Sat, plus have a Twitter feed advertising new arrivals @VirginiaMarket

This is by far my favorite place to pick up a six pack in the area. When I moved here form Portland, OR I was a little worried about the ability to find good craft beer in DC but my fears were put to rest when I found this place. Not only do they have a wonderful selection of craft beers (and almost nothing from the big bad beer guys) but the lady who runs the place will go out of her way to get anything you ask for. I absolutely love that I can go in there, ask for my favorite beers, and she'll have them in a week or two. What kind of store does that? I Love this place. Go try some fancy beer if you haven't already. I'd recommend the 22's of Green Flash Imperial IPA if you're really looking for a good time. Or a six pack of Hop Ottin' IPA will do.. Keep it up guys - You're the best!

It's pretty wacky that I could feel such strong feelings for a liquor store. It totally blind sided me, to be honest. After a trek through DC one early evening, I was looking to get my booze on. Living in Virginia, I'm not used to liquor stores looking nice and inviting. I have to deal with awful state-run stores and awful taxes. Walking around AdMo, I just so happened to stop into Virginia Market. I couldn't believe how clean and bright and inviting it was. It was not the first DC liquor store I went to, so I know that's not how all of them are. I couldn't believe that the liquor wasn't behind some counter and that everything was clearly labeled! What was this place?! There was great selection also... Not just of the alcohol, but also of the snack foods. (I liked that there was a freezer chest full of ice cream in the front.) They had a pretty good stock of Asian alcohol, too. However, I was specifically craving shochu, which they didn't carry. They did have soju though, so it was still ok! The owners both seemed really sweet. I didn't interact with them much, but I definitely got a vibe that they were good people. It's crazy how attached to this store I became during my brief visit! I don't live in the area, so I don't know when I'll be back, but I know if I were a DC local, I'd make a special trip just to hit up this store.

This is just a sad and depressing shop, the only reason to go there is that they stay open later than other shops. Ownership changed a few years ago when the previous, much-loved owners retired. It was bought by the same guys who own Universal Liquor down the road, and their business model is the same - just stay open late when other shops are closed. That's it.

Virginia Market is convenient - it being a mere 3 minute walk from my home means that I have sunk hundreds of dollars into the store over time. That's the only good thing I have to say about it. On several occasions I have cracked a can of Virginia Market beer to spit it right back out, the taste indicating bad storage practices and/or expired stock. I recommend that you look for seasonal beer, wine, or liquor when you shop there if you want the best chance at a good drink. The beer really can be hit or miss. Some of the staff is quite rude - the way that one employee speaks to customers is nasty. The store is also disgusting. Don't look too closely at the grime in the large open beer fridge - I don't want to know how it got so dirty. I would like to know why nobody has ever cleaned it, though. Finally, they do also charge a 2.99% credit card fee for all cc purchases, which is not posted. This is in clear violation of Visa's merchant surcharging policies, which state that "...disclosures indicating that a merchant outlet assesses a surcharge on credit card purchases must be posted at the point of entry and point of sale/transaction." There's only one sign posted regarding cc fees in the entire store and it only discloses a $.50 charge for purchases less than $10 - there's nothing about a standard surcharge anywhere.Although I have been begrudgingly loyal to VM for a bit now, I have realized that I might actually hate this store and will probably take my business somewhere further for better beer, cleaner cases, and transparent payment processing. Give it a shot and see what you think.

This is my go-to place to pick up beer or seltzers in Adams Morgan. They have great prices and selection compared to other places in the area. The customer service/interaction is also very good.

Came here on Sunday and there was absolutely no customer service! The woman at the register just stared at me and my friends. It was a weird and awkward experience. I truly felt racially profiled. We left and went to another liquor store due to the uncomfortable experience. I was absolutely disgusted and cannot patronize an establishment where such behaviors are displayed!
