They charge hidden credit card fees and do not let you know in ADDITION to charging if you order something under $10. Very shady

Where I grew up, a "Liquor Store" was more of a mini mart - - a store that decidedly sold hooch and booze behind the counter, cold beer in a case, and probably a few dusty bottles of wine sitting on a shelf on their ends (instead of on their sides in a temperature controlled environment... but I digress...). More importantly, they sold candy, and potato chips, and snack cakes by the box, maybe a small counter for sandwiches, a bowl of bananas and apples by the front counter, cigarettes, bandannas, T-shirts, basic first aid and "family planning" items... You get the idea.Other than alcohol? Universal had none of that... We only went in looking for bottled water, since the Walgreens across the street was closed, and the hotel mark up made it worth the effort to look elsewhere. We were about to walk out before we saw a single 3 foot wide cold case with a few soft drinks and water bottles right near the register. All that to say, I suppose if you're looking for booze, this is your jam. If not, there's a 7-Eleven about 10 minutes down the street by foot.

I was amazed with my new tasting contract I landed. This friendly out the way Wine & Spirit Store was dominated by a huge construction project right next door and that totally would be overlooked. Even with its few missing storefront letters, inside I was met with the friendliest managerial staff who treated me like I was the owner, lol. Brook and Leon you made my tasting company feel very welcome. Thanks to all the customers who purchased from me and the distributor partnership.Cheers The Timid Palate

Located on Florida Ave just east of Connecticut, this liquor store likes to avail its convenient location by overcharging for beer. There cheapest 6-pack is something like $4.99 (for coors light), and there are no cans of Busch or Natural Light. (Only 40 oz bottles [probably to make one who buys Busch feel like a bum]). Go to the liquor store on 20th and P if you have time, for better selection and prices.

I came here to buy a bottle of Jack Daniels and some mixers for a party since I was down in Washington, DC visiting.I have been coming here when I lived in the Washington, DC area four years ago but now live in San Francisco and miss this place. This is one of my favorite stores to go to versus a bigger store because it's a family owned small business and the service there is awesome. The prices are very reasonable and if you go to a few competitors, they are more money and they don't treat you as well. Besides...what other liquor store do you know in this area that is open until MIDNIGHT?

It's a perfectly fine, old-fashioned, wonderfully cluttered, urban liquor store that sells liquor (and beer and wine) and, as a previous reviewer discovered, is not a mini mart. (Very few big city liquor stores are anything other than liquor stores.) Staying at a nearby small hotel that doesn't have a bar, I really wanted a scotch and soda (yes, I'm that old). I took the short walk to Universal Wine and Liquor. The clerk at the counter was spoke enough English to be helpful and point me in the right direction. The scotch and the bourbons were a bit intermingled on the shelves, but prices were clearly marked, and much more reasonable than I anticipated. About what I'd pay at the WalMart in the small Indiana town I live in. They had a nice assortment of high-end single-malts; I wanted a Dewar's White Label, for sentimental reasons, and it was on sale. They even had club soda! The Walgreens across the street had no sparkling water of any kind that I could find (we are in the middle of a big heat wave). I imagine I'll be back on future visits (relatives in the neighborhood).

Terribly unfriendly staff when I stopped by in the evening. Basic courtesies were absent. I said hello. No reply. When I got to the register they just stared at their register screen. And then after they were done doing whatever, looked up and just stared at me. A little "hello" or "what can I help ya with" goes a long way. Plenty of other options nearby. Prices are at least 10% higher than nearby options. Don't waste your time.

This establishment does not comply with basic COVID-19 safety guidelines. When I approached the register, the store manager did not have his mask on (though he had one right below his chin), so I asked him to please put his mask up. He grumbled and pulled the mask up a little bit, and when I asked him again to please do so he refused, said I was being ridiculous, and said that "he was fine." Well, a lot of the rest of us are concerned about our health, the health of those who live with us, and the health of those in our communities. I left without finishing my purchase because I was so incensed. The DC DoH should fine this establishment and shut it down.

Universal has a friendly/helpful staff, good selection, reasonable prices (especially for this area) and great hours -- they're open until midnight seven days per week. This is a great help when I have people over and start to run low on drinks, or when I'm just running errands later than usual.
