I visit the Pie Man's stand each Sunday that I see them at the Dale City farmers market. A very tasty way to support a veteran's small business. He's a very kind Marine that always makes you feel like your purchase is appreciated. His set up at the market is always inviting with so many options to suit any palate.

Best bean pies in DC! I ran into Mr. Pie Man on the corner of the NMAAHC, and tried samples of a pineapple bean pie and a pumpkin bean pie. Not a huge fan of fruit fillings in my bean pie, but it was absolutely delicious! I'm a basic original kinda girl, and it exceeded my expectations. Can't wait to get another pie!

After an awesome visit at the African American history museum, I was wandering towards the nearest Metro station, there he was..The Pie Man...he was offering samples everyone that passed by... I was so confused as to what I just tasted. He said read the label.. The pie is made out of beans. It was delightful! I have never had bean pie.. He had lots of flavors.. Lemon, pumpkin, blueberry, original, caramel apple (which was the pie man's favorite), so thats what I chose. Perfect size for 2-3 servings, nice crust for only $5. Great pie!Location was on Constitution and side of the African American History museum.

We tried the chocolate pie and it was delicious! Everyone in my family loved it and wished we had more than one. I would definitely seek out the Pie Man for our next purchase.

The pieman was beside me at our local Fall Festival. When I got there he was set up with about 400 pies on one table, by the time I left he was down to possibly 20 or so pies. I had heard them telling customers about these pies from 8 AM to 5 PM and had already decided to try purchase one before I left. With a variety of flavors, pecan, coconut, blueberry, lemon and the list goes on I chose coconut. I had never heard of bean pie and if I'm being honest, it sounded disgusting but when I was finally able to try it I was so pleasantly surprised that I ate half the pie! The pies are enough (in my opinion) to serve about 2 people but it was so hard not to eat the entire pie, needless to say, I wish I had bought more. At $9.00 per pie the price was totally worth it. If you have the opportunity to try them I would suggest you do! You would be missing out if you don't.

The specialty here is the "bean pie", a creation based on mashed navy beans. Think of a custard or chess pie, but with a slightly thicker and more granular consistency, closer to a sweet potato pie. $5 gets you one in any flavor you may desire, coconut, chocolate, seasonal fruit, the aforementioned sweet potato, etc. etc. Fork and plastic bag optional, save the environment please. The crust is basic, a little sweet and maybe with a touch of ginger. The filling is smooth, not overly sweet, but perfect with a cup of coffee or for breakfast. I would not ready a whole one myself, but a half is a perfect share with your sweetie. I have no idea how this dude came to be outside the GWU metro or what his hours may be, but he's worth a stop if you luck into him. They travel well too -- I stuck mine in a suitcase and they arrived just dandy in Minnesota.

Every Friday and (almost every) Sunday, you can count on a huge table of homemade pies greeting you outside of the Foggy Bottom Metro station. Though some may feel that his insistence that you try free samples to be a bit overwhelming, I can vouch that it's worth the stop. Don't worry, there will always be another train if you miss yours. Just buy an extra pie as an apology for being late to wherever you were headed. These pies are unique in that they are navy bean-based without any additives or preservatives. Now, I know absolutely nothing about navy beans but a quick Wikipedia review says it can lower your LDL so that is good enough for me!Aside from the free samples, I have actually purchase the caramel apple which is so delicious. All of the pies are a lighter consistency and not overwhelmingly rich or sugary. All pies are $5 and, if only buying one, he prefers cash. Otherwise, card is accepted. Treat yourself to a taste (or a full pie!) to support this small business.
