I've enjoyed Sushi Taro's Kaiseki tasting menu in 2020 right before COVID, and so glad I got to come back 5 years later. Nothing too extraordinary about service here. We came for Restaurant Week dinner. 4 courses for $65. They did rush us a bit since it was busy, which I understand so we tried our best.We started off with Hamachi Tataki (seared yellowtail with soy sauce jelly). The soy sauce jelly was very different and interesting. Not our favorite, but not bad. Next was our warm dish, and we all got different things so we could try everything. Really enjoyed the Miso Butter Salmon and Sukiyaki. The Buta Kakuni was good too and reminded me of other braised pork belly dishes I've had, but more ginger forward and less salty. Our third course was 7 nigiri sushi and a half roll (3 pieces). All were amazing. High quality and generous cuts. We ended with their signature Hojicha Pudding with coffee jelly, and THAT blew our minds!!

Finally after so many years of dreaming of the Taro omakase counter we finally got to do the premium omakase counter for a special occasion and it definitely lived up to hype in my head. Food at this price ($350pp) is hard to quanity as "worth it", but this was a great experience and thoroughly enjoyed it. They whisk you away to the backroom and only seat 2 total parties so each party has a chef dedicated to them. I let the chef take the reins in starting, but as the dinner evolved it was truly a conversation allowing you to try anything they had and in any preparation format. One word of advice that I did not know until chef told me too late is that you can actually crush/eat way more nigiri than sashimi; I tried to be slick and try everything in sashimi format to make more room, but ended up stuffed, while nigiri was so crushable from the vinegared rice. I appreciated all the hot dishes that showed the different techniques of cooking, but did not need them and would have much preferred to only eat sashimi and nigiri. The uni, caviar, and toro toast and japanese snow crab dishes were obviously excellent prepared foods though. The premium omakase ($275 to $350) seemed to be worth it to me once for the upgrades which if I could remember were : upgraded prepared foods (blowfish starter; uni, caviar, and toro toast; japanese snow crab both soy briased and prepared hot) and access to premiums "box" (golden eye snapper, kamatoro, needlefish, japanese bay scallops, special type of hokkaido uni, sweet shrimp, japanese squid, and japanese wagyu (not sure on grade). The sheer amount and variety of fish made it all worth it. Getting to try so many types of mackerel, tuna, unis, white fish, and shell fish was insane especially some that are hard to find in the DC area. Some standouts included the grilled kamatoro, japanese wagyu and uni, uni flight including imported hokkaido uni in sea water, soy braised japanese snow crab, and sweet shrimp tempura heads. Only thing I didn't like was the shirako (first time having it). Pictures only include about half of the items served and definitely would come back, such a great experience!

I'll start off with my credentials... lol I'm from Hawaii and have had access to fresh fish and sushi my entire life. I am not Japanese so I will not comment on authenticity, but I can say that the quality was very good. I'm so glad I finally got to try Sushi Taro. I really enjoyed our meal here. We did not do the omakase and went the Ala carte route. Our server was very attentive and friendly! He made some really good suggestions and was quick with serving the food and drinks. The prices were higher for good reason most of the fish was flown in from Japan, so it was expected but totally worth it in my opinion. I can't wait to try some of the other dishes and maybe one day get the omakase. If you enjoy sushi, like not California rolls, I would easily recommend Sushi Taro. I posted pictures of what we had, most of it was on the specials menu so I don't know the names. But every bite was delicious. The uni was the highlight of my meal. My husbands would probably be the pork belly yakitori

I used to work near Sushi Taro in the late 90's and went there all the time, but it had been 20 years since I last dined there. Although the place has gone through a complete redesign, the Sushi was as fresh and sublime as I remember. You won't get better or fresher sushi in DC. Sure, there are celebrated sushi spots in DC, but Sushi Taro is where Japanese diplomats come to dine. We went for an a la cart selection of sushi along with white tail jaw and unfiltered saki. Everything was amazing. As usual, the atmosphere was great. Very traditional with some modern features, a bigger bar than the old place, and more light from the windows for the diners in the interior. Service at sushi taro is impeccable. My daughter is gluten intolerant and the waitress made her aware of anything that had gluten with each dish she brought out.

My husband and I went for the Omakase experience for our anniversary. It was worth it! You're escorted to a private back room and sit at a bar that seats about 6ppl total. It was just us and one other couple so we really had an intimate and curated experience. The chef's were knowledgeable and would help us pair wine/sake with our tasting. We tried a wide variety of fish and crustaceans that were full of flavor and fresh. By the end, I felt like we went on a full culinary experience of the sea that didn't leave me wondering. We'll definitely be back.

3.5 stars. This is the best sushi in DC in my opinion and I've been many times but this was my first happy hour experience. They advertise on their website that it's 25% off sushi and drinks from 5-7pm at the bar. When we sat down they did only place a drink menu and their daily sushi special, but we requested their full menu not knowing how happy hour works and they did not bother to explain. Turns out only the daily sushi menu is on happy hour so only our wine and toro roll were on HH. Still it was absolutely delicious and I love coming here.

I give it a 3.8 stars Came in on restaurant week and was very excited bcuz I heard a lot bout this spot. The ramen broth flavor was not good at all couldn't finish. Seared salmon was not that good as well. The spicy tuna roll was amazing with good spice. My other faves were the eel, shrimp, salmon and uni. I think for the price tho I would rather go to Torai Sushi in eastern market. Their sushi is just as good and lot less expensive. Also, I didn't get omakase, and I think omakase has the higher quality fish. So I don't think I can compare it to Nakazawa which I loved. The staff were really nice and easy going. It's in a nice neighborhood you can chill in too and the spot was nice and clean.

YUM! It's been a long while since I've been here... the last time was before covid. Back then, the happy hour was 50% off but now it is 25% on parts of the menu. Prices are higher than I remember as well. That is probably the one downfall I would call out. Aside from that, I showed up for happy hour ahead of time and had a gift certificate from a birthday present. I ordered a lot. There on my own after a few tough weeks at work and I was ready to eat. I ordered a whole boatful and a separate plate. Pretty sure it was how much I saw other customers order as a pair... maybe even more. Go big or go home! There were some new items like the wagyu with uni. The wagyu was full price but I was ready to treat myself and helloooo it melted in my mouth. It was delicious. The uni was also good and a delicious touch but not as rich as the Big Mac combo that I like to get from Sushi by M in NYC. I would probably still get it again. The fish overall was fresh. The servers were pretty good but a bit distracted. I think probably because they were also setting up at opening while serving the initial influx of customers. It was not too bad though. I was also super thirsty from baking in the sun outside to wait for happy hour before they opened so was chugging water faster than the average diner. I would come back again but more of an occasional treat.
