Sonya's Market was in great location compared to the Airbnb I was staying in on 11th St NW so I came here a few times over the weekend. The place is well stocked from floor to ceiling and the prices are descent for drinks. They have a gigantic selection of Wine.Be prepared to be watched like a hawk while you're in here with surveillance cameras and by multiple employees posted throughout the tiny store.

Cute little market in Columbia Heights! Random selection of items, but they have everything from tooth paste to brownie mix!

Might be biased on the 4 stars here because it is my local bodega that I frequent most. . . frequently but it is truly a pleasant experience whenever I come to purchase my groceries (beer). The place is truly cramped but that's alright because there aren't usually more than a couple people buying their groceries (beer) here either. The typical non perishables are all marked up and some of them are even Giant's own generic but it is too much a convenience fee to mind. What makes this place gold is twofold. The first is the lone proprietor, Mr. Yu. Mr. Yu is possibly the hardest working man I have ever met INCLUDING my own father. This guy works every day Monday through Sunday and he is in there to open the place up at 8:00 am and closing it down at 9:00 pm (although I have seen a younger man with similar features that has manned the counter during the day occasionally). When I wanted some groceries (beer) on Christmas day was I worried that he wouldn't be there? No way. I asked him why it is that he can afford to spend all of his time and holidays working and he explained that he had a falling out with his family in 1984 and hadn't spoken to them since. Did I mention he lets me come in and make change for the laundromat? The second is the cheap wine. While a pack of lightbulbs might cost you $4, I have purchased the cheapest magnum bottle of wine I have ever had in my life at Sonya's for about $7. Not the most flavorful but it certainly does the trick ;)If you are concerned about not being able to take the quickest route to the beer fridge because someone is checking out and filling the space between the end cap and the counter then this place might not be for you but if you want convenience and pleasant from someone who has been serving the community for 20+ years, Sonya's is your joint.

So convenient if you live around Sonya's. Great for wine and snacks. They even unlocked the door for my friend who was there right before closing so he could grab some "emergency" wine.

This is the best little corner market in Columbia Heights, hands down! Craving a bag of hot Cheetos? Need a plunger? Ran out of toothpaste? Sonya's has it all! Not only do they have a very friendly staff, but they have just about anything you might need. They also have a wide variety of beer and wine! Perfect place if you live in the neighborhood and don't want to walk to a cvs or target. Their products are a little bit overpriced, but you can't beat the convenience and lovely vibes they provide!

This place is around the corner from my house so I go here when I need something and am too lazy to be bothered to drive to Giant. As the previous commenter said, this place is small and packed tight, and the stuff (like any Bodega or convenience store) is a little more expensive than at the supermarket, but it's convenience can't be beat. Recently, Mr Yu was robbed at gunpoint, so now there is a buzzer with the security door that he uses to let people in and out, but otherwise things remain the same for the always polite, hardworking Mr Yu. What I really love about this place, is that although it is small, and they obviously can't offer a big selection, they always have at least one of whatever you need. I had a barbeque recently and ran out out charcoal (and plastic knives/spoons). Of course, Mr Yu had one kind of charcoal and one kind of knife/fork/spoon set. Want to bake a cake? He's got one kind of chocolate, and one kind of vanilla? Dog food? one kind wet, one kind dry. No matter how obscure the item, he will always have at least one of it (except for beer, which comes in infinite variety here). Mr. Yu, like all bodega's are the last of a dying breed of mom and pop entrepreneurs. He works hard, and never complains (even about the robber) no matter how bad things get. It's great that we still have independent business like this in Columbia Heights, which add real character to the neighborhood. It's been great coming to this place for the past four years, I hope he's around for many more.

There are a handful of small bodega/markets in this area, and they are all pretty similar. Sonya's, however, really should be treated as a step above all the other corner stores. They have eggs. and they have organic eggs. ? respect. make sure you ask Mr. Yu about what he has. Multiple times I have done the walk around and not found my item, then Yu quietly asked me what Im looking for, and voila, its back behind the produce chiller, or somewhere I hadn't thought to peek.

This market is great! They are tiny and a little pricier than giant or safeway (expected since they so tiny), have an awesome selection (if you don't feel like going far to make dinner they have what you need). Owner is real nice. Great local market.

I can see two corner stores from my front porch, but I always choose to go to Sonya's. Like any DC corner store, the options are limited, but they almost always have what I am looking for when I forget an item for dinner or want a quick snack. The produce is a bit lacking, but not awful for a corner store. The beer prices are high, but I rarely go just for beer.

for a small convenience store, they utilize their space very well. They provide a good selection of essentials, and you can find almost anything you might urgently need. They also have friendly employees who are willing to help!
