Excellent selection of beers and they have guest taps! There is something for everyone, which we found out after we saw the frozen drinks they had in the corner and decided instead of have frozen pina coladas instead of craft beer. Glad we did - these were really good! And a good size, too. Service was quick and helpful as counter service only.

Shelter is awesome! They have a great beer selection with ~30 taps and great variety of styles, including often at least one smoke beer (a personal favorite). Beers are always from small, craft producers (sometimes foreign ones) so you won't find any macro beers here (like Bud), and prices are a little higher to match this. Beers are usually served in either 13 oz, 16 oz, or 20 oz pours (depending on the beer) so definitely double-check the menu before you order. You can order either at the bar or via your phone. The atmosphere depends on the time of day and who is there -- it's a pretty spare, modern space, so it's all about the other people there. For example, you might get some people working on laptops or get families with kids. Shelter is part of The Roost food hall so you can order food from any of the stalls there. They have four TVs for sports but they aren't huge, so you have to sit at the bar for the best view.If you get beer here, you can take it elsewhere in the food hall, including to Caruso's next door.Service is fine and pretty quick, if they aren't busy.Pro tip: visit on Federal holidays (like Presidents Day) when they often discount some beers to $5, which is a steal for the great stuff they have on draft. Check their Instagram account in advance to confirm if they are running this promotion.

Jay was our bartender, he was quick and made drinks with a smile. The bar seating is comfortable, there's ample room and lots of tv screens, playing a variety of sports games. We'll be back to check out their other options.

Nice place with not too crazy expensive drinks and casual chill vibes to hang out with friends or even alone on the patio with your dog. Love that they bring the drinks to you and you order on your phone

I enjoyed this place. It's a great place to watch a game or hang out with some friends for a Happy Hour. You pay as you go which makes it even more convenient. If your looking for a good place in Capitol Hill with some good food options and draft/ wine selections give this place a try.

The drinks here are pretty good. They have a wide variety of options for beers, wines and cocktails. The service is pretty fast and the prices are typical for the area with most cocktails ranging between $7 and $15.

Shelter is from the creators of Churchkey, a popular beer spot in Northwest D.C. Shelter is on the bottom floor of a new apartment building in Hill East Southeast and part of a culinary clubhouse called The Roost. Shelter has a large indoor space with a long bar and a large outdoor patio with all types of seating. They serve a rotating list of craft beers, sour ales and ciders. Because of their diverse menu, they cater to all types of preferences. I love sour ale and they have two on tap weekly. Since it's part of The Roost, you can order any food item from the other shops from tacos to burgers to sushi.

Consistently excellent beer selections, choices galore, options on size of pour, and cocktails that are equally on-point. If you're on or near Capitol Hill Southeast, there is no reason to go anywhere else for a brew.

I am so over the Roost at this point, and it has everything to do with Shelter. The cocktails are sub-par, too small, and way overpriced. Yesterday I ordered an aperol spritz. The drink was way out of balance, no fizz to speak of, and it came in a small wine glass, so I literally had about 3 sips before it was done. After tax and the 20% tip the app defaults to, my total was $16.90 for one crappy drink. This is not an isolated incident, but a trend. The wine pours are small and expensive; if you order sparkling wine, it's more likely than not going to be flat; and they think they deserve a 20% tip when the customer does all the work because you're ordering with the app. No thanks. I have had enough negative experiences that I will start steering myself and my friends elsewhere.
