Samurai Japanese Steak & Sushi Bar

The experience was fun but food was very under seasoned. My family really, really enjoyed, and our chef was lovely- he was very funny and extremely talented. Staff were very responsive despite the incredibly busy night and service was very quick.

WARNING -- Less than 1 StarStay Away from Samuari Restaurant in University Mall in Fairfax, VAWhile the food is good (as far as Japanese hibachi restaurants in America go, particularly at today's prices), the wait staff and the owner are clueless when it comes to business etiquette and customer service.Although our hats are off to Chef Chris for serving up an entertaining and tasty repast, our waitress did her best to drive us away. Before we were even halfway through our meal, she initiated her assault on our table. Three more times she descended upon us demanding payment -- before we were even finished eating. How many times does a patron need to say "No" for her to get the hint?There's nothing like getting the bum's rush when you're the only ones in the restaurant at 3:00 p.m.The rest of the staff presented a formidable defense when I asked several times for the name and contact information of the proprietor -- only to put me on the phone with someone who purported to be the owner.The woman proceeded to defend her waitress, claiming that she merely was trying to provide outstanding customer service. NOT! In addition to downplaying our concerns -- our entire dinner party was profoundly appalled by this scene -- there was no effort on the owner's part to make amends. When you spend some $250 for dinner, you expect more.

If you're coming for anything other than hibachi, beware. I was here for dinner on a Saturday and the entire back half of the restaurant was packed with several birthday groups getting hibachi. Normally this would be fine and I get that hibachi is a show but wow... I could barely have a conversation at my table because of how loud, obnoxious, and distracting the hibachi tables were. I think there were at least 5 separate birthdays and every time it was time to since happy birthday to a new group, they'd play this super loud song throughout the speakers for the entire restaurant to hear AND there was a drum involved. I came here to catch up with some friends and this was clearly not the place to do that lol I wouldn't come back unless I wanted hibachi. They seemed like they were having fun. But for the non-hibachi tables...not good. Additionally, service was slow and it took 10 minutes for a server to come by the tables after we had sat down. The sushi itself was fine.

Disclaimer: This review is only for the hibachi food and service; I have never tried the sushi bar. When you first walk in, there isn't at clear host/hostess stand. What would usually happen is someone from my party would try to make eye contact with someone who looked like they worked there in order to eventually be seated. Not a big deal. Shortly after being seated, my party was attended to. Samurai offers a standard hibachi menu with various combination options. Each dish comes with rice, salad, miso soup, and vegetables. You can substitute the rice for fried rice (gluten free option upon request) for $3.00 more. (would recommend btw!) Their food is decent albeit their portions are small. Not everyone at my table leaves feeling full after.Although I do agree with some of the complaints made by some of the recent reviews, I did not experience rude restaurant service. The groupon policy was explained to me respectfully and the fine print wasn't verbose or not easy to understand. Note to future self - read the fine print more carefully!

My family and I are skeptics when it comes to good sushi places or places that are recommended, but we checked this out for my birthday and boy they did NOT disappoint! We made a reservation just in case, not crowded, seated right away.Great customer service, amazing sushi, and awesome hibachi! Our chef and server were very fun, friendly and entertaining. We even got a magic show by our server Ryan! Highly recommend! Can't wait to go again!

We decided to try this place out for the first time. We had the hibachi and sushi. They have an extensive drink menu and cocktail options which was awesome. The tempura vegetable appetizer was delicious. The hibachi steak and scallops had great flavor, along with fried rice, noodles, and vegetables. All were really tasty! For sushi we had a fried one, tuna tataki, and salmon sashimi... we were really impressed and plan to come back just for sushi! If you haven't been here before, you should definitely come check them out. We plan to become regulars!

Came for a graduation celebration - graduate's pick. Can't really go wrong with hibachi - the grill makes the food so flavorful. My hubs & I always spilt shrimp & steak entree (get regular not fancy shrimp, which was not worth the smaller portion) - more than enough for 2. Good bar drinks and service.The show is entertaining, always good time.

We just had an anniversary celebration dinner here tonight and we had a memorable evening. First, the interior is very inviting and attractive. It has a welcoming bar and sushi bar. My wife had the scallops which she said were really good and I had the 8 oz. steak which was very tasty and cooked perfectly. Of course, there were also the theatrics of the chef, mountains of sides; fried rice, lo mein and vegetables. Everything was delicious. Second, service was excellent. From the time we arrived (we did not call to reserve) when we were promptly greeted by a very friendly hostess until we were seated just moments later, everything moved smoothly and quickly. Our drink orders were taken as soon as we were seated and delivered promptly by a very friendly server. Our chef was very friendly and interactive with the guests at the table and put on a very good (usual Japanese steak house) show as he performed his trade. He was very skilled and kept us entertained as he worked through the process.Third, prices were moderate and food quality was very good considering how expensive eating out has become. It does help to have a Groupon but only a little. In summary, from the time we arrived until we left, we were made to feel valued, welcome and comfortable. Even though there was a notice at the door that they were short staffed and to be patient if service was slower than expected, we did not experience any such delays. All of the staff that we interacted with were extremely friendly and professional and couldn't have been more diligent in fulfilling any requests. All spoke perfect English which isn't always the case in Japanese restaurants - at least in my own experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary with wonderful hospitality, professional service and excellent food at a fair price. My wife said that she wants to return soon and I concur. Overall, ours was a great experience.

We have eaten at Samurai for 10 years and always enjoyed our experience. We tend to go there for special occasions, and our daughter choose Samurai whenever she gets to choose a restaurant. Earlier this summer, we went there for our daughter's birthday. They treated her like a queen, surprising her with a beautiful dessert and singing a fun birthday song. The chef recently moved here from the South, which is where we are from, so we enjoyed a fun and engaging conversation with him. Every employee we have met has been gracious and helpful. Last but not least, the food is tremendous! We always order the filet mignon with brown rice. The portions are generous and we come home with an extra meal simply by boxing up leftovers.
