You don't go here for the ambiance. Sure it's got some, but you go here for the incredible Oaxacan food. We had the queso fundido (add chorizo, obv) to start, and for entrees we had enchiladas verdes. The waitress was keen and knowledgeable and I cannot wait to go back.

Sometimes published professional restaurant reviews can be helpful in suggesting someplace to try. A favorable Washington Post review guided us to out-of-the-way, and easily-overlooked Sabor Mixteco on a drizzly Thursday and we came away highly impressed. Despite many local competitors for fast casual cuisine of many ethnic styles, Sabor Mixteco stands tall as a little restaurant not to be misjudged or overlooked by its humble storefront appearance and inexpensive, pedestrian decoration and ambience, bright colors notwithstanding. Culinary artwork with a Mexican flair can be found inside.Though non-fans of Mexican (and/or Tex-Mex) may wish to give this place a pass, if this cuisine is what you seek, Sabor Mixteco does what they do with excellence and charm. A large and varied lunch menu awaited us with surprisingly affordable prices. With lunch under $20 being difficult to find in the DC Burbs, here you can find many delicious and bountiful choices for less than $15, in 2025. Delicious bargains are rare indeed but exist here. One of us had the burrito, which proved too big to eat for lunch and we brought half home. I had the delicious Pastor Alambre Tacos off the lunch menu. We plan to come back and work through the other offerings too. Sabor Mixteco deserves more business. Maybe the recreational cannabis dispensary a few steps away brings them some? One can hope.

Gah damn, well I just added a new Mexican restaurant to my local rotation.I'm Mexican, and a California transplant, so Imma keep it real when I tell you it has been challenging to find authentic Mexican food spots on this coast. When I tell you that the rice was righhhht, the beans were creamy and delightful, the tortillas were good like my tia made them, the pasilla enchiladas were unique and flavorful (get cheese and chicken), and the tamarindo agua fresca was LEGIT. They also offer 3 salsas taqueras which is a rarity around here. The service was warm and friendly. They're also on Door Dash, so you know I'm gonna be a regular.Come to mama, I need some chilaquiles verdes now:)

Love this place! I got introduced to this business through a Yelp check in event. Otherwise I wouldn't have known it was even here. I returned on my own last week for Taco Tuesday when I was in the area checking out another business I learned about through Yelp!Poli (the owner) was very helpful. I placed a to go order for tacos. With the Taco Tuesday special, if you buy three tacos, you get one free. Not bad at all. I got two carne asada and two chicken. I really enjoyed them. The menu here looks so good. I'm happy they were able to get their liquor license now. I didn't get any drinks but I will be back!

I was intrigued when I saw the menu online, it looked very authentic. Prior to coming here, I hadn't found a good authentic Mexican restaurant in the whole DMV, so I decided to travel 50 min to give this place a try. The restaurant is casual, adorned with bright colors and Mexican decor. Came with my husband and kids, we were warmly greet and promptly seated. The menu had a lot of Mexican dishes that we hadn't found elsewhere, so that was great first sign. We ordered the green enchiladas, chileajo, side of cactus, side of home made tortillas, side of rice and beans. First impression: The food was presented nicely and portions were perfect. I can't explain how delicious, fresh, and tasty everything was! It tasted just like food from a Mexican grandma, which is so comforting and hard to find. Everyone that works in this restaurant is from Mexico, unlike some of the other "Mexican" restaurants with chefs from Central America. Sabor Mixteco is the true definition of authentic Mexican cuisine. The enchiladas were flavored perfectly, in a green tomato sauce with a hint of spiciness. The side of rice and beans were delicious. The chileajo was the highlight of the meal, the meat was so soft, juicy and marinated to perfection. The tortillas were unlike any other tortillas I've ever had in the DMV, finally someone who makes fresh and delicious tortillas!Cactus is so common in mexico but hard to find in restaurants here. Sabor Mixteco's cactus transported me back home. Please do yourself a favor and order the tres leches, I guarantee you have never had a more delicious one. Drinks are 5 stars too! The mezcalita, mezcal with tamarind and tepache are a must.Service was absolutely fantastic!! So happy to finally have found a place that truly honors Mexican cuisine. We were told a new, more expansive menu in rolling out soon so don't hesitate to come try this delicious food asap!!

This hidden gem is conveniently located in downtown Wheaton, offering plenty of affordable metered parking. If you're without a car, the Wheaton train station is just a short distance away, making it accessible for everyone. The owners are incredibly friendly and passionate about their restaurant. We enjoyed a great conversation about their journey in the food industry and what inspired them to open this place. It was an enriching experience that added to our visit. The food was delicious! I went with my husband and son, and we couldn't stop talking about our meals for days afterward. The authentic tacos were a standout, and we're already planning our next visit.Additionally, they have a charming patio that was perfect for the lovely day we visited. If you're in the area and craving great tacos paired with exceptional customer service, definitely check this place out!

Great customer service here! I came for the Yelp event, but couldn't eat any of the taco options because I'm a pescatarian. I got a quesadilla instead and it was delicious! It only took about 5 min as well. I also love that it's in the neighborhood- I'll be back soon!

Food was so tasty! We started with the $3 chips & salsa, ordered tacos de lengua, asada, al pastor, and suadero. Then my partner loved his enchiladas divorciadas and I ordered a steak torta with fries. We went around 4pm and it was a bit quiet with cumbia and rancheras playing in the background, pleasant vibe. Everything was delicious and the service was quick, kind, and attentive. So happy we live so close because we will be visiting again soon!

I will definitely go back here! The food was great, the people were friendly, and the menu had a lot of good looking options. I had two tacos and an order of sopes. The sopes were great--the beans were excellent, the tortillas were fresh, and the house made chorizo (an optional addition to the sopes) was delicious. The tacos were also quite good--the Al pastor was especially solid. The Al carbon taco was good, too, but the steak wasn't particularly well seared/charred, but it was well seasoned. The tacos were both generously filled. The space was comfortable and the hosts were warm and attentive; there was music playing, but it wasn't too loud.

We enjoyed our meal at this Oaxacan restaurant! The place is very casual with no frills. We would come back and try other items on the menu. When we arrived for dinner, there were several available tables and they said we could sit anywhere. We sat at a table, and service was attentive. We were in and out in about an hour. Ordered the chips and salsa to start- costs $3.50. The salsa is thin but very flavorful and not spicy in my opinion. I would order this again. We also ordered guacamole, which took about 10 minutes to come out (I guess they were making it fresh), and by that time we pretty much finished our salsa & chips. Our entrees followed the guacamole by a couple of minutes, so we left most of the guacamole for after our entrees. The guacamole tasted fresh, but we probably wouldn't order it again, because of the pacing and the salsa does the trick. As for entrees, we decided to have something other than tacos. We ordered Mole enchiladas and the bistec con salsa pasilla that comes with thick housemade corn tortillas. Both were great dishes. I especially liked how sweet the Mole was, because at other places, it can be overpowering, but not here. They dropped off 3 different types of sauces at our table. I like the green sauce. We ordered agua fresca (fruit juice)- passionfruit and tamarind for $3 each. They were sweet and refreshing. Too full to try their dessert offerings- next time! Parking- there's metered street parking ($1.25 for an hour) and a public parking lot ($). Across the intersection, there's a strip plaza with free parking, try that at your own risk.
