Kyoto Japanese Restaurant

Haven't written a review in like a decade but felt the need to find my login to review this place.Take the negative reviews with a grain of salt. I noticed people complaining about the price, but it looks like they ordered delivery and probably included the DoorDash fees and stuff. And the guy that complained about imitation crab in the roll? That's a defining feature of American style sushi rolls. Also, complaining about the presentation when you ordered delivery doesn't really make sense - stuff will move around when a delivery driver is handling your food and driving around.My wife and I have been here 2 or 3 times over the past couple of months. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food in a strip mall sushi joint. The prices are slightly higher than the surrounding area, but the quality is better. I lived in Japan for 3 years when I was stationed there, married my (Japanese) wife there, and we both agree that this place is good (she would know better than me). We've had the nigiri, sashimi, uni bowl, salmon bowl, pork tonkatsu, chicken dinner combo, and some other things I forget. The only thing that was just "ok" was the miso soup. We're actually going there tomorrow to try more things!Another thing to mention that's not necessarily indicative of quality or skill - we overheard the sushi chefs speaking in Japanese, not Korean or Chinese.So take it from a Korean/American guy and a Japanese woman: this place is worth a try.

Ladies and gentlemen, behold the $49 sushi tray! (Tape dispenser included for scale.) What an absolute steal--if by "steal" you mean "daylight robbery." I ordered pickup, blissfully unaware that two specialty rolls and two pieces of hamachi would be so... microscopic.Do yourselves a favor and skip this place.Go to Zento, where the ambiance is better and you actually get fed.============================================Responding to the owner's oh-so-insightful comment below:Yes, prices rise, but that doesn't mean portions should shrink! Paying $49 for what feels like sushi for ants? I think not.** Also, it's not about the budget. It's about not getting swindled. ;)**

Meh. I'm not sure why this place has so many good reviews?I got the spicy salmon, California, tuna, and the Kyoto special roll.The roe on the Kyoto special was very hard, which I've never experienced and did not enjoy.The rolls themselves were disappointingly small and poorly rolled (as you can see from my attached picture).I wouldn't say the sushi was bad... it was just very disappointing for $45 of sushi. I would not go back.

We're back!!!! Someone wanted sushi and miso soup after her coding class so here we are. Great food, great service every time... we made it to happy hour.Beautiful smooth jazz playing in the background gave Kyoto and relaxing and inviting setting this time around.

2.5 stars..Forgot that I had gotten takeout from here before and was disappointed. This place is fine. I think part of my experience was because I got delivery from across the bridge (it took over an hour)... The order you see in the photos was $220; i think for the level of quality and preparation this was too expensive. My main complaints: - the fatty tuna was brown and discolored, and you could not even chew it. DoorDash refunded but I was very thrown off by it- the restaurant should not have served that. - the Tamago had a greenish tint and tasted and felt manufactured. But it's hard to find decent Tamago in the DC area - the sashimi combo was very expensive for what it is I usually like to see some ebi/ shrimp and maybe even salmon roe or octopus. It was just pure fish... which is kind of a lot for 21 pieces. - the rolls weren't carefully put together and there was a lot of imitation Crab stick and other filler. If you look at the scallop nigiri, they didn't even bother to wrap it in seaweed.- the "extra fresh wasabi" was not actually fresh Wasabi like chopped up as I thought. It was just another chunk of the molded ball -- but! It was still pretty good. Overall the quality of the sushi was OK and if I was in a pinch and really craving...I think I would be okay eating here. But otherwise probably not. And I will definitely not be doing delivery.

A hidden gem!! Sit at the counter and let the chef choose all your dishes. Best sushi around with exceptional service!

The food at Kyoto was delicious. The service was quick and the staff was polite. Will be coming back.

Haven't ordered delivery sushi in a long time, and Kyoto is absolutely nailing the chirashi dish. Fresh, with an almost slightly sweet taste to the whitefish and what I'm pretty sure was yellowtail. Beautiful, delicious tuna and salmon slices, generouslyslixed but still easy to handle. Honestly, I'm so happy. Sitting on my back patio, truly enjoying every piece I put in my mouth. And it's always good for a restaurant to use real shish leaf as well. Adds such a lovely palate cleansing taste. I wish I had taken photos. But sadly for you, it all disappeared before I thought of it :)

We got 4 sushi rolls for takeout. It was okay. Did not taste fresh. Unfortunately, the salmon, especially, was not fresh. We've been looking for a good local sushi restaurant near Shirlington, but wouldn't go back. The search continues!

I'm not sure why this place is rated as high as it is. The sashimi was inedible. I literally spit several pieces into a napkin, & sent the rest back. Nothing tasted fresh or sushi grade. I ordered the sashimi regular, the happy hour spicy tuna & yellowtail roll, & an order of unagi sushi (which came to $54 with a happy hour beer). The only thing that was decent was the miso soup, rice, & the unagi. I would not recommend this place to anyone, & with the cost of dining out being what it is this place needs to do better!!!
