I may have found my new favorite restaurant :-) walked in for brunch after church. My husband chose it and our palates are on different planets so my expectations were low LOL but everything here was delicious! By the time I got to the last bite of my steak and eggs, I wished I ate slower to savor every bite. We also shared the French toast and lemme tell you... the maple syrup wasn't even needed! The side of their mezcal mascarpone was the perfect touch. And their house margarita was so refreshing. Service was prompt, with periodic visits from our server just to check in. The ambience is casual. I'm already mentally plotting the next visit.

Ate here for a late lunch celebrating spouse's birthday. We made a reservation for 1:30 pm using their website (super easy and convenient!), and when we arrived and announced ourselves, the greeter knew who we were already because we were the only reservation! Only three tables were occupied! I understand that evenings/ weekends the place is packed, so we found this very funny.Every single person we interacted with was friendly, nice, warm. It made for a wonderful feeling of hospitality which added to our experience. We are non-meat eaters (fish is ok), and spouse cannot tolerate spicy peppers like jalapenos/chipotle etc. So there were culinary challenges to overcome. Very patient server (shout-out to Jimmy!), and the solution was to leave sauces on the side, and to create a simple viniagrette dressing for the salad. We ordered drunken mushroom sopes, brussels sprouts with mole, fish tacos, and a beet salad (ensalada de betabel). Every item, every bite, was delicious, unique, flavorful, innovative. I love the spicy sauces and each one was better than the next, absolutely marvelous! The atmosphere is festive, including wonderful Mexican music. 5's across the board for atmosphere, service, food. Location: parking is a bit of a challenge but not terrible, and value: a bit pricey but worth it.I would love to return to try their cocktails, they looked fabulous!

STILL AMAZING!!! I can't rave about Cielo Rojo enough and it's even better than it was when I had it over a year ago in their old location! First and foremost, the customer service is fabulous! Are waiter was super attentive and so knowledgeable! The restaurant itself is warm and inviting with an authentic ambiance! Now the true winner of our brunch was the food! We started with hibiscus mimosas and margaritas where were delicious! The trio of salsas packed a punch with the heat but wasn't overwhelming and the homemade tortillas were the icing on the cake! I had the Gordita's w/chorizo and honestly I have never had anything like it before! The potato and corn masa was cooked to perfection, avocado was fresh and the sauces that come on it were delectable! I'm so grateful to have an authentic Mexican restaurant such as this right in my backyard! Bravo to the chef and staff at Cielo Rojo!

Went to Cielo Rojo last night for the first time and was not disappointed! The food was delicious, the service by Linda was excellent, and the margarita was very well-made! While the chips and salsa are not complementary, I highly recommend that you order them as the chips are homemade and the three salsas/dips we had were all so interesting and delicious. We both had the same entrée, Tres Moles Enchiladas with chicken and is was so good! I'm already looking forward to my next visit!

3.5To the surprise of no one, this review is of the old location. This new spot with ample outside seating and spacious interiors... I don't know her. I came to CR when you had to work for your eating experience. Despite the struggle, it still worked out. Sorta.I was doing double duty: I was meeting up with some old friends and getting a vibe check of Takoma Park. Well, thanks to me underestimating the time it too to get from Foggy Bottom to Takoma Park (or maybe I just had a *really* bad rideshare driver), I didn't get as much exploratory time as I wanted in Maryland. No worries, that just means I get more time to eat and hang out with my friends, right? Wrong. This was the old location. Outside seating was scarce and people hung out like they were at home, not at a restaurant. Even though my 'you move now'-fu is legendary, the outside didn't turn over for over an hour. We should have left but by then we had given so much time to waiting it seemed fruitless to leave. It didn't help matters that I spied a vacant 4-top 20 minutes before we were seated. Not that it matters anymore but outside seating was a bit of a chore. I know shabby chic-esque seating is cute and all but it's not very functional. None of my party is/was of the portly variety and we still had some troubles navigating chairs and tables.Seated, annoyed and hangry we got to the important stuff: drinking. Look, if I didn't get a libation in me (after all of the above), it was not going to end well for anyone. I started off with a house margarita (no salt). Satisfied that CR could nail the basic, I took it up a notch with my next order: the paloma margarita (no salt). The added grapefruit to the lime, agave and tequila mix hit the spot and was my drink of choice for the rest of the evening. We started with the trio of salsas. To pair it down to basics, it was a red, green, black variety. The 'black' (charred habanero) was my favorite. The heat and smoke balanced nicely with the spice and overall flavor. The salsa had depth. Layers. The chips that came with with house-made, crispy with a slight chew (my preference) and lightly salted. Delicious. I was starting to de-Hulk. Continuing my flavor journey, I chose the chicken tinga enchiladas for my main. I didn't think it was a big ask but my food came out well after my friends' meals. Yep, it was time for a little 'Hulk smash.' My buddies were halfway through their plates when mine came out. No apology. No drink on the house. Just 'here.' If the dinner hadn't been a reunion of sorts, my response would have been *much* different. Thankfully, the food was delicious. The three enchiladas came with different moles: poblano, pipian (for more pumpkin flavor) and cacahuate (peanut). The moles were distinct and lent themselves admirably to the tinga. All enchiladas were topped with queso fresco and served with garlic rice and pinto beans.I understand why Cielo Rojo is popular -- especially with locals. I'm happy to read that it has a new location with a much larger (and needed) footprint. My food & drink were pleasurable but getting there took more effort than it should have (especially given that I am paying for it all; this ain't food truck pricing). I almost matched the red sky with the Red Hulk and that's too bad. YMMV.

This place is adorable. The decor was amazing and everything was done beautifully. They have mariachis that come and sing around the restaurant. The service was great! We even got free tequila shots! ( I forgot to take pics of all the drinks!). The hibiscus margarita was amazing. The food was just okay. The mushroom taco was really good but the chicken mole taco was not a favorite. Other than that everything was great.

Cielo Rojo has quickly become one of my favorite local spots! The decor makes you feel like you've stepped into your Mexican abuelito's home--warm and inviting. The servers are incredibly friendly and check in after the first bite to make sure everything is perfect. We ordered the Huevos Rancheros and the Chicken Enchiladas, and both were absolutely phenomenal. Highly recommend!

We went to Cielo Rojo on the recommendation of Mexican friends which know good Mexican food. We were not disappointed. First, by default everything is gluten-free (I was in heaven). Then the margaritas were some of the best I have had. The lemon juice is freshly squeezed in house and it just made the drinks way better. The guac and sauces were also great. I had the enchiladas which were great - I love the mole sauce. Everyone in the group ordered different dishes and everyone was raving. The service was great and everyone was very nice. I can't wait to go back. Next time I think I will go for their brunch which I have heard good things about.

I saw this restaurant on IG and was very excited to try it. Not sure if their other food is good, but I only had the vegan menu and found the food lacking flavor.

Boy has this place changed since we first checked it out in its original, smaller location years ago!The space and decor are gorgeous. Modern and airy and fresh while still nodding to tradition and also offering decor details that feel like the actual Mexico I encounter when I go to actual Mexico rather than an outdated Americanized stereotype of Mexico or a contrived TexMex vibe, which is unfortunately the norm in most American Mexican restaurants. An ample, diverse menu that made it hard to choose, which is atypical for me as someone with dietary restrictions. Vegetarian friendly. Some interesting options.Nice drink options.Food itself was absolutely incredible. We had not really liked the food when we went to the first location years ago and boy was this a completely different experience. Sauces that made me want to lick the plate.Service was OK. Nothing remarkable in either direction.Prices were a little high for smallish portions. Food flavor and quality was the saving grace here. I would rather have paid a little more to receive more food. Recommend supplementing entrees with additional small plates. It won't be cheap. This is the only reason it's a 4 and not a 5.We don't get to Takoma Park very much these days but when we are out there this will likely be our go-to dining spot, with the caveat that we will need to go somewhere cheaper/with better portions if we are absolutely starving.
