Because we paid the $20 deposit last Sunday 7/14 and arrived on time for our 12:00PM reservation just to be seated in silence while waiting 15 minutes just for drink order and did not receive our food until 1:05PM. Sooo y'all pressing for $20 just to have your customers wait a hour for service not making sense to me. This establishment needs a bit of work because holding customers accountable to show up for their reservation when your staff need to be held accountable to make it to work on time to prepare the food for your paying customers. Their chef did not walk in UNTIL 12:45PM. Secondly, it's literally a shame this establishment is ran so poorly because food is, BOMB....minus them waffles. We did not walk out because we were personally aiming to ONLY support small Black Businesses that weekend but how can people support if you lacking on staff, service and manager even being present to run spot....But shout out to Renee for having to serve the only three tables of people solo, and shout out to the people at those other two tables also for having to sit around even longer than our hour wait for their food. Sooo, it's a pass for me right now for visiting again....that $55 Diamond Platter does not out weight the lack of customer service for me."

B R. "I really like this place and the food is quite good. The woman owner is lovely. I first met her more than 20 years ago at their grand opening. I left Virginia for a number of years. Now that I am back and was so near, I stopped in for a Saturday brunch treat. The menu (and there is a QR if you like to order on your phone) is not huge but provides enough choices with many breakfast items and drinks. This is a great place for vegetarians and even has some vegan offerings but also some traditional meat dishes. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner.I had the breakfast dish with eggs, Kitcha fitfit, and fu'ul. It was delish and ample. I also had the organic flaxseed drink (smoothie with soy milk base) to go. I asked for it without the honey and it still tasted so good. I saw people next to me eating french toast and it looked fluffy and super delish. The only down side to this place is that there is so little seating and it is lively -you will be sitting close to others and hear a bit of their convos even if you don't want to listen. That shouldn't be a deterrent, though, because the food is worth it and the ambience is still nice and friendly. I would say there is table seating for about 25 people plus an additional 10 barstool seats at the counter.Everyone up in the joint while I was there was probably Eritrean or Ethiopian with a couple of exceptions, including me. I say that in a good way, because it means people are going there because the food is authentic and good. If you are not familiar with Eritrean food, I highly recommend it.This cafe is a bit of fushion, bringing together American and Eritrean fare that has something for everyone (vegetarians, vegans, and carnivores). Besides breakfast/brunch items that are offered all day long (yay!), they offer salads, soup, sandwiches, pasta dishes, pastries, and traditional meals (veggie only or chicken, lamb, fish, or shrimp based dishes). The have a nice drink menu that includes a variety of coffee items, traditional tea with cinnamon and cardamom, and the organic flaxseed smoothie which I recommend.I would give this place 4.5 stars, because it is tiny and can be crowded during peak times. It's too small to have more than one waitress with the owners assisting. I am not criticizing anyone for that -it's just a small business. It's casual with a good ambience, clean, enjoyable, and the waitress/owners are nice. More importantly, the food is very good and it is clear the owners care about healthy and tasty meals. I highly recommend for breakfast, lunch, or a casual dinner... and for take out. Lovely cafe and I wish the owners another 20+ years of business success. Great addition to the neighborhood."

Ericka G. "This place deserves an update from me. I've never been to the restaurant and I was harsh in my initial review. No, it is not owned nor operated by W Africans but given the W African restaurants are readily available in this area (nor are they good), I order from here. Often. Very often. It's worth it. It is. No lie. I always order a few stews, the jollof, the pounded yam, the ginger drink and a couple different proteins and eat off of it for the week. It's delish. It really is, although it's not perfect. I do have a few issues... the containers for the stews aren't always filled, sometimes, the jollof is sometimes dry (it would be so nice to offer a lil condiment container of red pepper stew w/ the jollof), sometimes the efo riro is too spicy and not made w/ enough crawfish. I've ordered maybe 30x since this review (maybe more). I'm not a hater, I promise. I just prefer authentic cuisines that are made by those of that culture. Given no options, this is close enough."

We went to TasteMakers first, but most of their restaurants were closed and as we were leaving, we spotted Petit Afrik, a West African food truck. We decided to get one thing to split and tried the Bakassi Steak Sandwich and OMG! It was Phenomenal!!! Definitely a unique sandwich and very flavorful. And they make their own bread which was also equally delicious. Couple the sandwich with the pineapple hibiscus drink and we were thoroughly pleased. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back again. You can find them on Facebook and IG @petitafrikdc. Give them a call to see where their food truck will be that day. We caught them right across the street from Right Proper Brewing Company in Brookland, but they also said they frequent H Street, Howard University and a few other places. Finally found the right time and place to try out African food in DC. They have various types of fufu which was awesome. I tried pounded yam and fufu with egusi and oxtail. Either Egusi you can either get the vegetarian option or with any meat. I love meat so I ordered egusi with goat. Goat was nicely cooked and very tender as it should be. Egusi had nice balance of heat and very flavorful with lots of green veggies. Goes so well with fufu. Oxtail was great. It's cooked in their hot tomato sauce. I wish it wasn't as oily as it was. That's the only negative. But I drained the oil and mixed it with the kibbles and gave it to my pup. She loved it. Now she expects something to be mixed with her kibbles every time. Serivice and ambiance were great. Great value for money."

Austin G. "There are many reasons to visit Hedzole- the food, the drinks, the atmosphere, the owner's story, the neighborhood. Stopping in for plantains on a Saturday afternoon, here's my experience.1) Food: Serving Ghanaian American food, the main concept is building your own bowls using foods like coconut rive, jollof rice, plantains, and more. They have plant-based options. Or you can order one of their bowls- salmon or stewed oxtail. They sell sides like cabbage, plantains, "red red," and groundnut soup with fufu. 2) Drinks: They sell bottled water, soda, and a hibiscus-based drink. 3) Service: When I walked in, the owner was there serving the food herself. Leaving a career in corporate America, she started with pop-ups, farmer markets, and a residency before opening this spot in April 2023. She's kind and happy to walk you through the menu.4) Space: It's small, but cozy. There are several tables in a brightly-decorated space on the bottom floor of a 1935 brick apartment building.5) Area: It's along a commercial area in Sixteenth Street Heights. Moreland's Tavern, a local bar, is across the street. Rock Creek Park is within walking distance. There's free street parking close."

We were asked about "our relationship to spice" and when we hesitated he offered to put the spicy sauce on the side (good move since it was really hot to me, kind of hot to my husband). The fish was so good that my husband barely touched the plantain and that's one of his favorite foods! We had jolof rice and as well which was pretty good (it doesn't compare to the amazing fish). One piece was edible. The soup broth was ok but the fufu was so mushy. It literally had no texture. It was like eating some soggy Mashed potatoes. For the cost of the soup. It was not worth it. It was tough, bland, and served in a ridiculously small portion. I need to emphasize the portion size again--it was tiny. When I cut the beef in half and took a bite, I immediately realized it wasn't good.I went to the counter and politely asked if I could swap the beef for fish instead. I was told "No."--unless I paid for an entirely new plate. The reason? Because I had already taken a bite. When we walked in, they sat us at a table, then the owner, TJ, came to us and asked, "what do you want here?". It was a really weird question to ask customers. We were like "food!". Then he was, "do you know what you want?". We were not sure what we wanted because it was our first time there, and he did not even give us a menu yet but asked us what we wanted. It was a bit weird. We told him that it was our first time here and we wanted to try to food out. He finally gave us the menu. The menu was a one-page paper. He asked us if we wanted to try the food out, he will provide us with something different from the menu. We asked for chicken, fish, and meat as our main dishes. With the drink, they gave us a punch that tastes good and very gingerly. He also asked us if we wanted anything while waiting for the main dishes. He told us to try their kabob. The kabob tastes like beef jerky with a spicy powder and onion pickles on top. We are all like the kabob.I personally like the fish the best among the main dishes. The fish dish has plantains, I like the plantains, but my friends do not like the plantains. The chicken was okay, and the meat was assorted, so it tastes a bit weird to me, but one of my friends likes the meat. The price was pricy there. It was more expensive than we expected. And because what he gave us was not on the menu, we have no idea if the price was right. He told us he gave us a bit of everything to try out. Customer service was a bit weird when they asked you want do you want here but did not give you any menu. Lol. This place is fun to try once, but I don't think we will come back again."

I had a stressful workday so I decided to reward myself with some delivery for a late lunch. I ordered via Postmates and it arrived 5 minutes sooner than originally estimated. The food was still hot when it arrived. Jollof Rice with Fish: The rice with the tomato stew was just the flavor profile I was craving. The inside of the meaty fish was cooked perfectly. However, the outside had lost its crispiness by the time I started eating probably because of the steam generated in the container. I do wish I had more of that stewed tomato sauce as well. It was just a lot of rice and meat with not enough stew. They serve a portion that is big enough for two to share. I ate half and saved the other half for later.Pepper Soup with Goat: The pepper soup is spicy! Not just "pepper spicy," but also "spices spicy." There was plenty of goat and a lot of tendon-y, tender pieces which I love! There was nothing else in the soup but goat, a pepper, and spices. We needed to wipe the area prior to settling in. The tables are on the smaller side, so it made eating a little difficult because of how far you needed to reach for your meal and the limited space to spread the dishes (Full disclosure, a child was present). The food was good. We ordered the double portion of Beef Suya, Egusi soup w/ fufu, and Jollof. I usually ask how the dishes are prepared because of the different styles. The waitress had to check in with the chef because apparently the preparation differs depending on who is cooking that day. She also spent most of the time at the bar with the two other customers, so our service wasn't as fast (considering the lounge was near empty). The portions were large and filling. I think it's a bit overpriced for the portion size because a lot of west African restaurants are a bit pricey which is normal because the time and effort it takes to put the dishes together. I understand the process. Maybe I'm just greedy and want more food. Service is a bit lacking and that's my only complaint. You have to walk into a hot, smoky kitchen to order and there's an expectation that you already know what you want and there's not much explanation about the dishes. It's not the kind of place that you come to learn about the cuisine, just to consume and that's fine but not winning the owners/proprietors any bonus points. The bissap didn't hit well especially for the price. The plantains would've been better if they weren't overcooked. He also could've told me that the dish would have plantains on it and I could've saved myself from ordering a side. That was a little shady. "There's something nostalgic for me about being at Rahama that takes me back to Ghana.Perhaps it's the service that feels like a welcome home from that one aunt or uncle that you just know us going to have something to say or maybe it's the smell of ginger and spices that greet you the moment you approach the door. What is undeniable is this: you wont find Ghanaian food at this quality and taste anywhere else in the DMV. Theres so much range in the food offerings that it would be a disservice to come here and just order jollof. Try something served with soup, try the juices, go for the waakye and i promise you wont be disappointed."

Janae H. "I wish I could've recorded the interaction between me & whom I assumed was the owner when I walked into this establishment. He was sitting in a chair, very relaxed so when I walked in I was waiting him to greet me, ask me what I wanted to order...but I got a WHAT! OK, so I said I would like to order a jerk chicken sandwich & champagne cola. My total was $9.54. I gave him a $20 (mind you this was just like within seconds) he turned to me & says what did you give me...a $20...my food was ready in seconds, OK you gain points for that, but you lose points for my sandwich being slightly hot (temperature) especially when I was dining in. Overall the sandwich was OK. My bestii came & got a small cassava leaf stew with rice and she let me taste it...it was actually pretty tasty but I've never had it anywhere else so I don't have a frame of reference.Don't take my word...try it for yourself"
