Stopped in for a drink with friends. The place was packed, and had a nice vibe. The crowd was young, 20s and 30s with a few older folks (like me and my friends). It was loud and it was hard to hear what others were saying. Still we had fun. The music was great (I commented that some of the music was older than most of the patron lol). We did not try any food but the drinks were great. I had a French 75 and loved it.

Butterworth's is a great place that I can highly recommend. The food is great (really great - not just good) and the service is outstanding! We wanted a new place for dinner and Butterworth's came up. Man, are we glad that we found this place! We could only get a reservation for 9:15 pm and, when we arrived, the place was ROCKING!!! So active and lively and busy! Our table was not ready when we arrived so the very friendly and capable host/owner (Brent) seated us in the waiting area AND provided us with free drinks while we waited!!! OMG - that has never happened to us before anywhere!!! A good sign of good things to come in my book.We waited half an hour for our table and, during that time, various staff members stopped by to see how we were doing, to see if we wanted anything else, etc. They even offered us some tables that we did not want (near the cold front door for example) and they were very good at saying it was fine for us to wait. When our table finally was ready, it was a corner booth in the back - the BEST table in the entire dining room according to Brent. I agreed! So, let me take a minute to talk about the service at Butterworth's. Everyone we talked to was friendly and knowledgeable and willing to take time to have a conversation with us. And it seemed genuine! I am not sure how Brent has been able to gather a group of people so good at their jobs - but these are truly people who understand the hospitality business and they take it seriously! Accolades to the entire staff including owner and managers! The service at Butterworth's was top notch. A real reason to return all by itself! Now the food. So, the dining room is an eclectic mix of brick walls, mis-matched furniture, vintage elegance - but nothing high brow. The ambiance is friendly, chatty - loud even - casual and bistro-like - just as advertised. However, the quality of food OVER-delivered given the dining room. Each dish was excellent. Our appetizer was a scallop dish that was inventive, fresh, different and delicious! On the small side perhaps but it really left an excellent impression. And, given what our main course was, we were quite haeppy that it was small. What it lacked in size, however, it MORE than made up in flavor and impact! Now the main course. We ordered a big old ribeye steak (with the emphasis on big). We shared it, thank God, since the cholesterol level in that meat would have made my physician very unhappy! The steak was prepared just as we like - medium rare. The ribeye was perfect - chewy in that way that good beef should be. The bernaise sauce came in a charming cut glass bowl with a cute little cut glass cover on it. So cute! The fried potatoes (pomme frites) were the best I have ever had - and there was a whole mound of them! The course also came with a side salad of baby carrots that included the carrot greens, fennel, onions and all sort of other salad stuff. The beautiful vinegar-y dressing was a perfect foil to the robust and luxurious steak. We gobbled up the entire dish - steak, pomme frites, bernaise and salad - all of it!!! And we did not even feel guilty (just full). For dessert, we had the beignets which were small enough to finish. Powdered sugar and cinnamon pillows of fried dough to fall in love with! The coffee too was really good.I rarely walk away from a new dining experience where I think all the stars were aligned. But, here at Butterworth's, it happened. As we were putting on our coats, Brent came over to ask me how he had done. Where in DC does that ever happen? And I think that he genuinely wanted to know too (whether that's true or not, only Brent knows). All in all, Butterworth's is a great casual dining room that has a SUPER PROFESSIONAL AND FRIENDLY STAFF and some SURPRISINGLY GREAT FOOD!!!I recommend Butterworth's to one and all.

review is for dinner - unfortunately had a poor first experience at butterworths all around. will need to return after they have more time to smooth things out and fine-tune the menus and service. walked in on a weekday and was able to grab a table by the door. there are two doors that open constantly and given the weather in january, we had to keep jackets on - try to sit at the bar or a dining room table.our server was eager to help, but unfortunately didn't guide us very well on the menu or how much to order. the dishes here - even the largest plates - are small portions. we split two small, two medium, and one large plate and left hungry. for the food - favorite dish was the braised tardivo - served whole with a comté sauce and caramelized onions. good tasting and balanced dish, but was a little difficult to eat given it was served whole and tough to cut into smaller pieces. the other favorite was the foie gras tart tatin with pearl onions - great flavors, just on the small side as it was about 4 bites total. the other dishes were unmemorable (scallop en croute), or memorable for the wrong reasons (the $36 beggars purse that was only a few bites - stuffed with a wild mushroom farce where flavors and textures of the mushrooms were lost, served with a simple side vinaigrette salad; and the cassoulet ravioli which was so salty we could only eat one bite of it - and I typically have a very high salt tolerance). for service - we (and other tables) had trouble finding our server at times for refills, drink orders, check, etc. we had to flag down the host stand or others walking by to get help. we unfortunately sent a drink back - a main flavor component for this particular cocktail was not listed on the menu (campari) which my dining companion does not like. they addressed it however and made her a bespoke cocktail based on what flavors she was looking for which was nice. we also ordered an add-on house uncrustable, which never arrived even after we brought it up. it took about 30 minutes for the first dishes to arrive, but timing was consistent after that. The inside/decor/vibe is great, just needs to improve on other areas of the experience, but I can see this becoming a great option in the neighborhood. Unfortunately we don't live nearby and given the initial experience aren't rushing to travel out of the way to give it another shot soon

Butterworth's is a newer café and restaurant (as of last year) that opened in Capitol Hill. It's well decorated and the overall vibe inside is very intimate and nice. I came here for an early lunch with a friend and would be interested in coming back more for dinner as the restaurant seems to offer some interesting drinks. For lunch / breakfast, I tried their toasted oolong tea which came in a tea press. For $6.50, I was able to get 2-3 smaller cups of tea from it, which felt like a fair deal. The flavor was ok - it wasn't very intense, which I wondered if there were enough tea leaves or if it was intentionally a bit lighter. The smoked salmon toast was wonderful, and pretty traditional with its cream cheese and capers. The menu said it had kale but when I got mine, my order had carrots on top. I don't recall the server noting the substitute when I ordered, but it was really good regardless. Service was kind of slow, and we had trouble alerting someone to give us the check. However, everyone was very kind and polite!

Had the best steak sandwich I have ever had. You have to see Lee the bar manager when you are here. Makes a great old fashion.

Literally steps away from the U.S. Capitol, Butterworth's transports you far from the Nation's Capital to Paris. With an antler chandelier, old picture frames on the walls, and hanging plants on shelves, the decor is impressively French. My friend and I sat at the bar for drinks only, but their food menu was tempting. (We'll be back.) To drink, they have classic cocktails like a French 75 with bubbly in it and a version of a sour. I found both refreshing, familiar, and inviting. Service was excellent, especially by Bart, who runs the show. He greeted us with a genuine smile and even asked us how we were doing (and he meant it). We'll be back!

FABULOUS CAP HILL ADDITION!! The staff was soooo welcoming and patient as we had some vegans with us and LOTS of questions about the menu ! REAL CANDLES and dim lighting make for a great dinner ambiance. Our server was so honest about his favs and it was appreciated. Cabbage lamb roll up was so delicate and tender, fresh made buns a delight, HOME MADE BUTTER, one of the best pieces of salmon I've had in a long time- and a green salad made ad hoc that NEEDS to be on the menu. An excellent French 75 made with tequila, and finishing off with a FABULOUS warm pear cake ! Will be back for the ribeye and frites for sure !

Butterworth's is a cozy English restaurant on Capitol Hill. First, the vibes are great. Delicate china, eclectic wallpaper, and comfy seating all help set the tone. The service was incredibly friendly and helpful. I have a gluten intolerance, and while they didn't have a ton of options for me, they were happy to accommodate giving me potato puree as a side in addition to the ratatouille. The ratatouille was deliciously rich - perfect for a freezing night in the city - and the potato puree was silky and luxurious. I also had one of their house cocktails with Mexican coke, fernet, and orange. Very good. The only reason I hesitate to give it 5 stars is that I wish the gluten-free options were a bit more extensive. So this is a 4.5/5 star review, rounded up!

Being new-ish presents issues for any enterprise. In the restaurant industry, good customer service can conceal or make up for deficiencies related to growing pains (in most cases). Unfortunately, when customer service fails, other issues become more apparent and less forgivable.Food. We opted for the soft scramble toast which, in our opinion, was just okay. It is a Gordon Ramsay style scramble with creme fraiche on top, instead of mixed in, topped with shaved black truffles. The eggs were salty to the extent of overshadowing the truffles or perhaps the truffles were lacking in flavor. (FYI, I am a truffle lover.)Service. Spotty to absent. The coffee orders took roughly 30 or so minutes to deliver, arriving after the meals were served even though we ordered coffee first. The server did apologize for the tardiness, but there were only two other tables seated when we arrived, so the reason for the long delay was clearly not a rush. We entered and left with little or no acknowledgement.Ambiance. The digs are nice, albeit a bit dim the further you get from the entrance. The setting is on the intimate side, with cool shabby chic decor that may get lost in other less complimentary facets. Parking is easy to come by close to opening time on the weekends.Happy eating, foodies!
