I love a small, independent, locally-owned grocery store, especially a walkable one in a neighborhood without many supermarket options. I love the eclectic feel and the friendly, personable staff. It's generally clean and organized even if the layout is hard to follow. I appreciate the variety of ingredients I can get here, from fresh nopales to cashew milk to tamarind to canned ackee. The huge number of fresh tortillas, both flour and corn, is also awesome. The only thing that would make Avenue better is a more diverse selection--it's missing some basics like nuts and tofu and fresh herbs (besides cilantro and parsley). If those gaps were filled this would be my regular grocery store!

Five stars for convenience and customer service.Produce is fresh and prices can't be beat. Lots of Goya products I can't find anywhere else close by or in regular markets. Badia spices galore! This markets address is actually at 5010 New Hampshire Ave. The dry cleaners are next door and a liquor store is next door as well. You can also purchase beer and wine at the market.Limited amount of "health food" items, but you'll find soy, almond and coconut milk in frig. If your looking for ice cream, the selection is pretty limited. But if you're srsly jonesin' , you'll find something in the way of Breyers, Turkey Hill, Greens, and a random "premium" pint here and there.

This market is a neighborhood gem. It is clean, well maintained and well stocked. The management works hard to keep the store stocked. The staff is friendly and hard working. I always see employees and managers stocking and cleaning during EVERY visit that I make; especially in produce, which is a welcome sight you don't see in many bigger stores. Even during the height of the DC Shut Down at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic response, this store kept up with demand. Bleach, detergents, ammonia, cleaning supplies and other "newly" in-demand staples remained in good supply, even when the large chain stores were sold out for weeks. The produce department is VERY good, and their prices on produce cannot be beat, even when considering the convenience of the store might lead you to think they would be tempted to over charge like CVs or 7/11. They don't. In fact, we specifically buy our potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, onions, and just about every Caribbean and Asian spice you might want, from this store. I have become an addict to Serrano and jalapeño peppers and cook them in almost everything now. Seriously, we will never again put up with spoiled produce from Amazon and Giant/PeaPod deliveries when this store is 1 block from home. They sell almost every imaginable type of fresh and hard cheeses for Central American cuisine. Seriously, there's 10 types and brands of queso fresco, crema, and frying cheese--it's all there and well represented. They also have good household items. I buy the large outdoor incense sticks here (3 for $1)--our front porch stays fragrant and crisp, which is very pleasant in the summer!Need a mini molcajete to make guacamole? They've got you covered. Looking for fresh caught, whole fish (red snapper, whiting, trout) that they will cut and clean on demand? Done. Do you love getting live blue crabs--they frequently have those during the summer. Of course, like any store, everything isn't perfect. I am a bit underwhelmed about the deli cases (lunch meat and sausage), but that's just a personal issue because I am extremely picky about selection and freshness. However, it is all suitable if you're in a pinch. If you want a HUGE selection of dried beans, rice, corn meals, corn flours, and canned goods--you're in luck!Over all, I'm a huge fan of this store. Very happy it's just around the corner in my neighborhood!

Fantastic place, great prices! All food and drinks essentials are in place, it's around the corner and has great produce prices. The Ethiopian bread and spices and the Latin American spices are a bonus. They even have dried hot peppers that are traditional food in the Balkans! The produce is better and cheaper than the farmers markets in the neighborhood. I don't use it for meat or beers though as I buy cheaper from Costco

employees here are extremely rude , witnesses a customer reach out to a cashier who was on the far right next to the ice machine asked if they had something in stock , the cashier looked at her coworker and stated "I don't like when they ask me questions when I'm busy " her coworker started laughing , the customer walked away , since the cashier did not acknowledged her. if you're miserable working there then please look for a different job instead of letting your anger out on customer. the cashier was Latina , her hair was up in a bun. this isn't the first time I witnessed her being rude to customers.
