YMCA of South Hampton Roads

I don't go here often...but looks like I will start coming here more. It is one of the smaller YMCA. Their cardio theater is gone but they replaced it with a functional workout equipment which is awesome. Love the new area and equipment! And the bathrooms are really clean and seem like much bigger than Mt. Trashmore.

Nice convenient little gym. I don't usually opt to go here but it's near the interstate on Indian river road making it a very convenient place to work out even though it's not the nearest to my house. Despite its convenient location, It wasn't my choice gym because of how outdated it felt. The locker rooms were really old, there was chipped paint everywhere, I felt leery of the showers and some of the lockers wouldn't even open. However, since returning ... I discovered that they finally updated the place and renovated some parts of it. I think they even added more cardio equipment as well. The locker rooms look great & even feel pretty luxurious in comparison to how it used to be. Also, the family restrooms are really nice as well and they contain their own showers too. My little brother used to come here for their day summer "camp" & he really enjoyed it This gym is still pretty small compared to its counterparts in Mount Trashmore & Damneck but it has a very nice neighborhood feel to it which I've grown fond of. Also, if I'm feeling hungry during the middle of my workout .. I can just walk to 7/11 and grab a taquito. Lol. Just kidding (or am i...) the 7/11 nearby is pretty convenient though

A soon as you walk in they make you feel part of the family. Instead of getting in and getting out (which you can do) you start to want to stay longer. Did not take long for staff to start calling us by name before we even check in. There also is a movie room.(4 treadmills plus stair masters and several bikes) room does not feel cramped and stuffy- Watching a movie on big screen helps time pass while doing cardio. Sometimes get a little more in so you can finish the movie.

My wife and I have been coming here for a little over two years mainly in the evenings. It is very nice being so close to our home. It is a smaller gym than what most people are looking for but has a lot to offer. There is a smaller sized pool with a sauna room, steam room, and hot tub. I have not used any of the child care services but haven't heard of any issues from friends. The personal trainer team is very friendly and they do not hesitate to offer free advice to anyone who asks. Both of the locker rooms were recently remodeled and look great.

So I moved out of the area into Chesapeake and the Great Bridge YMCA has been absolutely amazing! I am surprised at how different these facilities run when they are just a short distance from each other. The only complaint I have is the cost. I honestly don't understand where they get off charging 93 dollars for a family of 3! I came from San Diego and we paid 68 and that was for all of the locations and more! Pretty much the same. In fact, if you do some research you will find this is one of the highest YMCA memberships in the country. I wonder why.

This YMCA has a large swimming pool which you can view from the lobby. There is a pretty decent size hot tub as well. They have awesome daycare services. The staff members do a great job of keeping the children entertained and properly supervised. Their cardio and free weight area isn't cramped. They have plenty of cardio and weight machines to choose from. They also have plenty of free weights. After I complete my cardio, I like to do my weightlifting and toning and then I follow up with abs on the mats. Unfortunately their mat area is rather small. It seems like I always have to wait for folks to finish before I can get over there to do my ab work. I need space when I do my abs, especially when I'm using the large exercise ball. My recommendation would be to provide a larger mat area. You'll find a very friendly atmosphere here. The staff does an excellent job of maintaining a clean environment.
