Yellow Umbrella has been a household name for me since I've moved to RVA. I've always been a big seafood person. In the last year, I've realized how easy it is to prepare seafood at home and have been more adventurous with what I'll cook.***LOCATION***This charming market is in the west end on Patterson Ave. They have a little parking lot in front so it's easy to park you car.***EXPERIENCE***I was looking for 2lbs of mussels to make a Giada recipe I'd been wanting to try in my new Dutch oven. I went to the seafood counter and someone kindly helped me. When I mentioned it was my first time, they took the time to show me around the market and explain how a majority of the store has locally sourced foods. I loved that it felt like a farmer's market and specialty market in one.***PRICE***I paid about $12 for 2lbs of mussels. This felt like a great price compared to what I'd get for that at a restaurant. Things are a bit on the pricier side, but that's to be expected from a specialty market.***CONCLUSION***I had an incredible time here and dream of coming back soon. I highly recommend coming here for fresh and delicious seafood. It's a lovely shop with kind people and great food.

We finally made it to Yellow Umbrella and were not disappointed. Whenever we are in the area we stop by. There is a parking lot but it can get full during certain times. The staff is warm and welcoming and are ready to answer any questions. When I was there in October they had blue Maryland crabs and they steamed a dozen for me. They were delicious. Their meats cheeses and seafood are fresh. Their premade meals are also good as my wife got a few for a week that I was going to be out of town and they were a nice treat. While there make sure you get one of their smash burgers. One of the best burgers I have had in a long time. Highly recommend.

There is no better place in the area for the freshest seafood, particularly local and regional fish like rockfish, flounder, shrimp, tuna, etc. we have been coming here since they first opened years back, and are always excited for our return trips. Selection of fresh fish, meats, as well as prepared sides is just unbeatable and the service is exemplary as well. Excellent wine selection, all of the sauces you need, fresh bread and eggs... they have everything you need for a gourmet meal. It's not cheap but I am always confident I am getting the best quality product around.

I have loved seeing their growth and transformations over the years and appreciate how they always improve upon an already fantastic job without sacrificing fan favorites. They carry a wide array of seafood, red meats, poultry, produce, prepared foods, cheeses, and bakery items as well as interesting local, regional, and foreign snacks. They always especially have a huge variety of prepared meals for seafood lovers.Their lunch counter is something you don't want to skip. I remember when they only served lunch three days per week and would sell out of popular specials (e.g., the lobster rolls). Nowadays, the lunch counter is open almost all week.Their store is always bright, clean, and inviting. It's quite small and intimate yet they carry such a wide range of items.

Charcuterie heaven, baked goods paradise, fruit and veggie delight, butchers and seafood utopia! Put this small but mighty gourmet grocer on your list! Not only is every food section in this shop displayed aesthetically, but the quality is without parallel. There is plenty of staff on hand to help you find that elusive item you've been craving! I've now been in this store dozens of times and always find something new! Everything you want under one umbrella! I've had the pork medallions, the steaks, the chicken and the salmon. The meats are from responsible farms, local if possible, grass fed and humanely raised so you can feel good about your choices! It's refreshing to find a true butchery in RVA! The seafood department is quite a catch! Whether wild caught or farmed, they take care to offer hormone and antibiotic fresh fish, and the other shellfish is produced just as conscientiously. I've also stocked up on fruits and veggies, and I love that the bags of spring greens, baby spinach, and mixed salad lettuces are in smaller bags so they don't go to waste in the fridge! The prepared section is a life saver and a time saver! Unexpected guests? Running late for dinner? Pop in this quaint shop and choose from a variety of well thought out, perfectly paired, ready to go meals! There are lots of sides to choose from as well! And I don't leave without grabbing a container of egg salad, the Greek orzo pasta salad, and a few ham biscuits! The homemade soups and pre-made salads are awesome! Healthy lunches for days! Talk about quick and easy!I love the dairy cooler! I'm a fan of the British and Irish butters, the organic eggs, Devonshire cream, and the cream cheese! It's nice they offer a small selection of refrigerated products to you don't have to make an extra trip to one of those huge, bustling chains! Never have I left this shop with some bakery provisions! The espresso chocolate chip cookies, the pies, the brownies and the rice kripsy treats are to die for! So many goodies!! And the freezer carries those incredible Nightingale Ice cream sandwiches!Did I mention the snacks and crackers, baking goods, honey, jams, the wall of sauces, oils and vinegars, canned goods, seasonings and spices or my favorite department... the charcuterie section? The choice of salamis, hams, and cheeses is a charcuterie lovers dream! Don't forget the olives, bruschetta and pickles! Your pantry will be well stocked with everything Yellow Umbrella has to give! The wines will delight any connoisseur and beer & brew selection is sure to make you hoppy. As you can see, I'm gushing about this farmers market, bakery, butcher and seafood shop, mini market, cheese shop, wine and beer spot and dairy bar all rolled into one! Although the prices run higher here, don't let that rain on your parade! Get under the Yellow Umbrella and have a sunny day!

This is a cool store with a lot of cool offerings. I came by here yesterday to pick up some smoked fish items and crackers. The selection here is pretty solid for meat, seafood, snacks, etc. I plan on coming back to buy some more items for sure.

The fish is fresh and tasty. Many options for take home dinners etc. You will be glad you stopped by. The only things to avoid is the fresh fruit and some of the desserts. Maybe they will catch up with the desserts soon as I realize the meats are their key point and strength.

Although the Lobster roll had plenty of meat stuffed inside - it tasted fishy. And it was served on a stale roll. Once home I replaced the dry roll with a fresh one and yet, the flavor was still off. Last visit I bought supper ( prepared food) and I swore I'd stop wasting my money. It was up to expectations. What was once a local legend is now myth. I'm sad! ( That said they can't go up on prices any more. Halibut at 32 bucks a pound!! Inflation was fashionable before Biden - at the Yellow Umbrella!)
