God, where do I start?! This place is a little hole in the wall with the best sushi I've had in the 757. The waitress made some great recommendations and even gave a us a surprise roll based on our preferences. Definitely recommend! Can't wait to go back and tru their hibachi!!

Very cozy restaurant, very unassuming from the outside. There were lots of patrons a great sign that this must be the local favorite spot. The servers and staff were very friendly. There was a gentleman talking to customers who seemingly was the manager or owner, sharing the concept behind what they ordered. Food was delicious. I ordered the roll with fried soft shell crab but asked that the fruits be on the side; it came to my table looking delectable and tasting quadruply so. Will definitely come back to try everything. Highly recommended.

This place is very interesting to say the least. This was my first time here, and I came with a friend for lunch. They have interesting rolls that you don't see at other places. The rolls are a little on the sloppy side and they fall apart but with a good amount of fish. The rolls are shorter than traditional rolls with 5 pieces. The rolls taste very good which definitely helps the falling apart issues. We ordered the rainbow roll, black widow roll, tuna to go.

This Old House Japanese Restaurant first opened in 1995 in the Aragona Village Shoppes complex and has proven its ability to stand the test of time.It is tucked away in a hideaway spot at the tail end of the section that runs parallel to Aragona Boulevard. The El Parian Mexican Restaurant is two doors away, whose space was once the original location of Luna Maya before it moved to Ghent. The storefront presents a worn and humble appearance with windows that appear to be papered up. If wasn't for the Open sign, I might have guessed it had closed. The scent of incense hits your nose as you walk in, which is something I have never encountered before in a Japanese restaurant. It didn't really bother me, and its scent was quickly forgotten once I was seated. The interior presents a warm and cozy feel. Some have mentioned its outdated decor, but I didn't really notice or care. It anything, it added to its character. The old menus I have seen in past photos seem to have worn themselves out of existence. Specialty sushi menus stand on end in plastic holders on each table. The server hands you a long thin paper menu when you are seated, on which you check off the sushi or sashimi items you desire. I saw no mention of the kitchen items from their old menu.Whenever the subject of the best sushi restaurant in the area comes up on Facebook, This Old House always gets a ton of votes from their fierce and loyal followers. This is a family owned restaurant, led by their sushi chef known as Mr. Lee. Friendly and outgoing, he projects a great deal of passion for his craft and bends over backwards to please his customers. His son has also waited on me during some of my visits. My tastes in sushi rolls are very simple and traditional. I prefer the old-fashioned hosomaki style sushi rolls with the seaweed on the outside and without any flashy bling. All I want with my sushi rolls are the usual ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce for dipping. My preferences eliminate most of their specialty rolls, which are prepared uramaki style with the rice on the outside. Fillings such as cream cheese and sauces such as eel sauce and mayonnaise are abundant. Some of their rolls are even topped with various fruits such as mango and strawberries. I have tried the following to date:MISO SOUP: The broth tasted a bit weak in the beginning, but its flavor picked up nicely toward the end. I would have liked a few more pieces of tofu. My Rating: 3.5 Stars.THE TUNA ROLL: Also known as the Tekka Maki Roll, this is a traditional hosomaki style 6-piece sushi roll with the seaweed on the outside. Mr. Lee told me: "I make big rolls", and he wasn't kidding. The pieces were huge, and the seaweed on a couple of pieces snapped loose before I even picked them up. This is usually an indication of excess rice inside the roll and maybe a lapse in craftsmanship. Otherwise, the tuna inside the rolls was very tasty and spoke of high quality. The pieces filled me up nicely. My Rating: 4.5 Stars.THE YELLOWTAIL ROLL: This is another traditional 6-piece roll, one which also included scallions for a nice bit of crunch. Once again, the pieces were packed with rice, and the seaweed came loose on a couple of them. Otherwise, the roll was tasty and filling: My Rating: 4.5 Stars.SPICY TUNA COCKTAIL: This dish comes in two versions, one which includes Sriracha mayo and the other with a ponzu vinegar sauce. If I heard correctly, the mayo could not be separated from the Sriracha. Since I am allergic to mayonnaise, I had to go with the ponzu version. The tuna was presented in cubes drenched in a ponzu sauce that presented a thin watery texture with little depth of flavor and no spice. Otherwise, the tuna tasted fine. My Rating: 3 Stars. ASSORTED NIGIRI: I chose three pieces, which included Salmon Belly, Spanish Mackerel, and Yellowtail. Each one was flavorful and well formed with no complaints: My Rating: 5 Stars.BLACK NATTO ROLL: This is an off menu roll with fermented soybeans as its filling. Mr. Lee serves a Black Natto version made with black soybeans, which he cited as superior in quality to the yellow soybean version. He spoke very highly of its healthy probiotic benefits. The beans were full of their fermented funky flavor. Some of them broke loose from the seaweed that held them, which could be partially due to the larger size of the black soybeans. My Rating: 4.5 Stars.BLACK NATTO BOWL: Black Natto is also available as a donburi style bowl dish as well. Mr. Lee whipped up a version that included fermented black soybeans over sushi rice with avocado and wasabi, topped with pieces of tuna and salmon sashimi. It was profoundly satisfying. My Rating: 5 Stars. When I averaged out the food numbers, I came up with a 4.3 star rating, which was not quite enough to round up yet to a full 5 stars. My work here is by no means over. I will be dropping in from time to time, and hopefully an upgrade to a 5 star rating will be in its future.

This hole in the wall is a holy grail of sushi. Amazing food and service. Their sushi rice is to die for and the salmon is melt in your mouth. Order to go and sit down. The restaurant itself has a strong incense smell which may deter some, just fyi. I'm telling you this is some of the best sushi in the 757.

I was seated and completely ignored for the 10 minutes after that. But the person who was seated after me was already able to order and got a cup of water. I left. Not like I was noticed. Unfortunate since I've been wanting to try this place.

Recently, a friend and I stumbled upon This Old House while searching for a new sushi spot. It had decent reviews online, so we thought, why not? Located conveniently close to home, we decided to give it a shot.Pulling up, I realized I'd passed by it countless times without noticing. Tucked away but still accessible from Virginia Beach Boulevard, it had a charmingly unassuming exterior.Inside, the ambiance was unexpectedly authentic and inviting. Despite arriving at 6:30 PM, the place was comfortably busy, yet not overcrowded. The staff made us feel right at home, offering helpful recommendations and answering our questions with ease. Our food arrived promptly, and I opted for the Tuna Good to Go Roll and the Virginia Eel Roll. Both were absolutely delicious, with generous portions that left me fully satisfied. The prices were reasonable for the quality and quantity of food served.Overall, This Old House exceeded my expectations, and I'll definitely be back for more sushi adventures.
