It's a beautiful venue! I was there for a gala and it was really exquisite. It definitely is a place I would like to host something in the future

Though still having the Hotel John Marshall badging on the room it's really been turned into a top tier ballroom/highrise condominium that sparkles. From the attentive staff out front and in the gorgeous lobby that makes you think Vegas to the amazing ball room host to amazing weddings it's a simply great facility.Though only here for a few short hours for cocktail hour and a wedding reception I fully designed my own condo on their huge 80 in touch screen in the lobby fully giving you the lay of the land in your new beautiful high rise condo. The lighting is great with huge chandeliers, the carpet is elegant, but rugged, the upper balcony and staircase is detailed nicely, great ventilation and a large stage for performances of all kinds.Did I mention all the marble in the lobby or the bar as well. I've been to dozens of weddings, but this my first here in Richmond, but for an indoor reception and the happiness of the newlyweds along with the cocktail hour, food and drink I have to say this place is a treat and a beauty and something any prospective couple should look at if getting married in RVA.

Everything about the quality and service from the John Marshall Ballrooms and as well as the Catering by Suzanne was superb. The John Marshall was a perfect venue for our wedding. We used the lobby for cocktail hour. With the high ceilings, marble, and tasteful sofas and chairs, it was perfect for guests to relax and mingle. The ballroom is classic and a beautiful space with great architecture and chandeliers. The John Marshall includes tables, chairs, and linen which reduced our headache for planning. Bathrooms were spacious, large, and clean, easily accommodating our 130+ guests. Because no one had booked on Friday, we had the flexibility to set up some of our decorations ahead of time (instead of day of) which relieved tons of stress. The upstairs bridal suite allowed us to lock things up there before, during, and after. The service was exceptional. Waiters were always present during the cocktail hour for food and drink and the staff during the seated dinner was on top of everything. Our point of contact was Amy. From the beginning, and throughout the whole process, she was incredibly friendly, warm, and responsive. Her expertise showed as she offered up ideas and things to consider that ended up playing out really well. During the planning, she responded to our emails very quickly and had changes to our proposal done fast as well. The food from Catering by Suzanne was extremely good as well. Our guests commented on the quality of the food and that everything came out in a timely fashion as well as hot! We went with the beef tenderloin (cooked perfectly), salmon, and zucchini noodle pasta. Everyone raved about the passed hor d'oeurves and that there was enough to go around. Instead of cake we did a pie bar which went over fantastically. Amy and her team had 5 incredible pies that our guests could choose from in a buffet style. We set it up so that people could mingle over there at various times and get pie, ice cream and coffee.

The venue is beautiful and the catering staff and food wonderful--but sadly, a bad apple can ruin an entire experience. READ THIS BEFORE BOOKING A WEDDING. It seems that Amy (the person who assisted my friend and family with booking the event subscribes to the mentality 'once i have the sale my work is done.'). Why? On the day before of the event she was providing tours LONG after we were scheduled toarrive for the chaotic, pre-wedding preparations) and when we asked for basic necessities she acted annoyed. Her entire attitude was phony, snooty, and all around nasty. We were not even provided with WATER OR ANY DRINKS in the bridal suite pre-wedding. Clearly this woman knows zilch about planning. When people are shelling out THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND YOU CANT PROVIDE EVEN A FEW DRINKS FOR THE BRIDAL PARTY.Like most wedding establishments...they're in it for the money. They could care less about your day.

Just returned from a wedding/reception. This venue is beautiful. The staff was friendly and efficient. The move from the wedding room to the ballroom was seamless. The John Marshall staff was professional from the bar, servers with the appetizers while we waited for the reception room to be set up to the dinner servers were 5 star. The food was great too. I highly recommend this venue for your party needs.

I had the worst customer service experience ever with this venue. I was working with Amy and received a contract from her only to find out that our date was already booked. The explanation that we received via e-mail from her was that her co-worker had already booked the date for other clients and that she was unaware of this. All wedding venues that I know of block of the specificied date in the contract, so she must not have communicated with her co-worker. This was a horrible experience for us and we will never recommend this venue to anyone. Perhaps, they may consider giving the staff mentioned above additional training on wedding coordination and customer service etiquette.

RUN FROM THIS VENUE! Amy Loving excels at sales. However, her customer service and follow through is HORRIBLE! 1) After numerous discussions about the groom's serious tree nut allergy, salads were served with walnuts causing a huge disruption and medical drama eating up 40 minutes of the reception. 2) We were told we had use of the bridal suite, but didn't. 3) After candles/holders were bought and carted to the JM, Amy said they weren't allowed. Candles are a very popular table decor item and we should have been told! 3) Amy had not given her staff the latest seating chart (from a week prior) and it was screwed up and the MOH and her BF had no chairs at their table. (She says the planner gave her staff the wrong one. Maybe SHE should have given her staff one.) 4) During family picture time we were supposed to have apps/drinks for us but didn't. The groom eventually asked for food, but we never got so much as water! 5) The JM screwed up the ceremony seating, making our planner have to reorganize the decor after it was done, even though Amy denied it. Amy said our planner must have done it, which was absurd since now all the seats had programs (placed by our planner) except for the front row, which the JM added for no apparent reason. Hard for Amy to deny JM's fault since she was far too preoccupied by the wedding going on in the other ballroom, which is why we hardly saw her. 6) After numerous requests, we still received no monetary compensation for all these mistakes. My daughter only asked for a refund on the salads (JUST THE SALADS!), which is what had the deadly nuts. But Amy never budged. The only compensation we received was late night nibbles and champagne toast, which we never wanted anyway and didn't agree to. (Amy said she mentioned it to the groom, but after 4 benadryl, was he really the best person to speak to about this?) We did get an 1/2 hour of the reception, which we were clearly entitled to for stalling the reception for about 40 minutes while the doctors monitored the groom and administered drugs/care. But it was extremely little compensation for seriously ruining the couple's wedding. They were planning on using that 40 mins to an hour to go around and greet each table as opposed to a receiving line. That way they could party and dance the rest of the evening, having already thanked each guest personally for coming. But that never happened, and I know some of the extended family and out of town friends certainly felt slighted. What a horrible feeling for the newly married couple to have that hanging over their head! Amy was hardly present and I spent too much time trying to find her when all this was going wrong. She had to be told eventually by me, the MOB, to go apologize to the bride and groom. To think that never occurred to her in the 30 minutes following the medical episode is just appalling. Thank God doctors were in attendance to monitor his breathing and pulse, as this was the first time he hadn't used his epi-pen in this situation (which then requires a trip to the ER). And he really, really didn't want to go to the ER on his wedding day. ALSO, another guest informed us of a tree nut allergy on their RSVP. Thankfully, his wife noticed the nuts before he took a bite. This REALLY could have been a disaster! Neither the bride or groom ever ate, and the groom was unable to consume alcohol after all the meds. TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! She's all about the sale, but that's where it ends, sadly.

We recently had a wedding ceremony and reception at the John Marshall. It was a pleasure working with the staff from the desk clerk to Amy Loving. Amy answered all of our numerous emails in a timely fashion. The cocktail hour in the lobby was lovely and the staff flipped the ballroom from ceremony to dinner in a record time. The food was outstanding!! Many, many guests complemented us on the venue, the food and the convenience of having a hotel to stay the night within walking distance. A perfect wedding venue with reasonable cost compared to other Richmond venues, they do not nickel and dime you. Wish we could have my second daughter's wedding there:-)
