The Blue Lagoon

What's up VA! It's been a while. So I'm from Virginia and when I was coming up, a very popular Caribbean food place was the Hummingbird. Amazing food, right by Norfolk State University. And I'm talking about back in the day, like the 90's. The two brothers F&S, who owned that place, now owns this place The Blue Lagoon. And the food is right! It's best to come here and pickup the food yourself. I did last night, my mom order a Large Chicken Curry with rice, bean and cabbage. They opened it up to show me, stream was coming out. I believe the order are cooked fresh, not to setting under a heat lamp mess. The inside is tight! Once people get back out to eating in restaurants, I know this place will be packed. Right in downtown Portsmouth. You know that area is being build up. So this place is an excellent addition to the area. I'm eating a chicken patty now as I'm typing this review. I got 4 chicken patty's, 2 cheese cakes and the Large Curry Chicken. I should have gotten more food, like the fish or shrimp. Hands down these are the best chicken patty's I've ever had. And as you can see from my Yelp, I'm all over the place. But I will be coming back through here for sure!!!

This was my first visit and it recommended to me. I felt like the pieces of oxtails were all knuckle sizes so I was disappointed. The cabbage and rice and peas was very bland.My friends come here frequently and when I showed them my plate they were even disappointed. I may give it another try since I did like the customer service once I arrived.

First, let me say I'm glad there's a full service Caribbean restaurant downtown Portsmouth. It's been a long time coming. from what I was told the owners of this establishment used to own hummingbird in Norfolk. so like any other spot you got to go with Old faithful. jerk chicken rice and peas with cabbage. now I wanted the chicken patty but they didn't have any so I got a beef patty. all I can say is they will have and see a big chunk of my money every week. The jerk Chicken was perfect. nice heat even though I'd like a little bit more. the rice and peas were top notch I can't complain at all. I'm happy with what they did with this particular spot especially if you knew what it was prior. it looks real nice on the inside. they have a nice bar and plenty of seating... I think the next thing I'm going to try is the Escovitch Snapper...

The venue is nice. It's big too so bring your friends and their friends. The staff was attentive not fast. Catch the difference. Plenty of parking. I didn't notice any folks loitering the spot. The food is a good idea, execution is subpar tho. The jerk chicken is kind of spicy and not that smokey flavor associated with the jerk process. It was butchered as you would expect from a Jamaican restaurant. The rice and peas weren't great. I got it from the lunch special so the price wasn't bad but the food is underwhelming. They didn't have any patties to go with the cocoa bread that was delicious. I would come back to try the patty and cocoa bread and experience the happy hour (the drinks and prices looked worthy).

I can't say enough how much I am growing to love the blue Lagoon Caribbean style food restaurant!!!This review is of my 2nd visit to location:Father's Day 2021. in response to a flyer as well as the great experience of my 1st visit to try the Father's Day brunch Special of Akee and salt fish, for what I thought would be a lunch special...a little confusion easily addressed by owner/cook/staff I don't know But "Sherman" resolved the issue.In conclusion I was very happy with my experience!!my companion and I (her first visit) Were at the close of the experience very satisfied. there were a few kerfuffles to be addressed, of which the staff did handle patiently courteously and very kindly. we ended what was a grand eating experience both looking forward to our next opportunity.Anaya, Sherman and all the other staff present provided Awesome and Service!!

This was what they call a Large Jerk Chicken, I call it a hot mess. Macaroni tasted worse than Kraft in the box and the chicken was burnt and inedible.

I had the pleasure of eating lunch there yesterday, the server was very pleasant and checked in on me frequently. I had the Red snapper, Plantains and Rice and Peas. My food arrived in a timely manner, it was hot and freshly prepared. The fish was a small catch, but was cooked to perfection. The presentation was awesome, as you can see in the photos. The Plantains were sweet , hot to the touch and were cooked perfectly. The Rice and peas were good and I could barely finish them.

The jerk chicken was good. The yams was good. The Mac and cheese tastes horrible. Tasted like mayonnaise , sugar and sandwich sliced cheese. Could use alot of work. They also could of packaged the food better.All of my food was in 3 different containers for no reason. The club scene there looks nice though. Nice TV and bar area plus dance floor.

Couldn't even tell you what the food tasted like. Ordered a side order of fried dumplings during lunch and never got it. Waited 45 minutes and I left. Told em to give it to the old man sitting next to me. Got me late getting back to work ‍

First time ordering. Curry Goat and Cabbage, delicious!! The best I have had in long while. Thank you!!!
