Surf rider is a good place for good seafood at a fair price. Debra and Sean are good employees who have provided me service throughout the years.I wish they offered the corn pudding everyday. The seafood is good but better options should be provided for the side dishes.

First time at this location. When I used to live in town we'd go to the Newtown Rd or Greenbrier locations. For an app we got the crab dip. This was good, very creamy and the pitas were good. Meals: My partner got the fish tacos and he said they were alright. I could see the chips were very greasy. Unfortunately their steamer was down which meant anything I would have wanted I couldn't get. They also ran out of she crab soup the day before, and don't offer much in the way of toppings for their fish (example no crab top style, lemon butter, or sauce other than the soup). So I went with their special for coconut shrimp. I don't realize how big they'd be, so I ordered too many, but honestly they were just ok. They definitely didn't taste like coconut, instead more like a hush puppy batter. Also the "marmalade" wasn't a marmalade but more like a flavored mayo dip- not something I would expect with coconut shrimp. The coleslaw was good but the stewed tomatoes tasted more like sugar than anything else and I couldn't have more than a bite. Drinks: my partner got the ocean breeze which he says was good. The espresso martini I tried and although good, it wasn't what one would expect from an espresso martini as it was light on espresso taste and more creamy than they usually are. I know my mom enjoys this place, but I wouldn't return or recommend it.

We went to Surf Riders for dinner. When we got there we were promptly seated. We got there right before the restaurant started filling up for dinner. The waitress gave us the menu and read off the sides. It was just a little aggravating because it was several sides so we had to remember what she said. That should definitely be listed on the menu. The person I was with had a stroke so her memory is affected. So hearing the waitress repeat the sides several times got old fast. Omg. Please write them down somewhere. I ordered the pork chops which comes fried or grilled. I asked to have gravy and onions added. There was an upcharge for that. It wasn't a problem to pay it because it was reasonable. But smothered pork chops are something people eat all the time. It should be included with the dish. I got mashed potatoes and green beans with toast. It was only $10.99 so the price was right!!! My friend got the she crab soup, scallops, and baked potato. Her meal was pretty pricey. It was about $30 for those mediocre scallops that weren't even hot, and $9 for a tiny cup of soup. But on the other hand the soup and potato were SO hot they burnt her mouth. I had to watch her spit it out. Obviously the microwave was used to reheat this stuff. I did enjoy my pork chops though, it was very tasty with the gravy. Without the gravy they were bland. The margarine they serve has a weird after taste. I would order the pork chops again, but I don't think I'd have anything else off the menu. The desserts are listed on a chalkboard. But you'd have a hard time seeing it depending on where your sitting. They should definitely figure out how to incorporate this stuff into the menu. It seems like a restaurant tailored towards an older crowd. The staff was friendly and the manager was very attentive and did try to resolve issues as they came up. All in all it was an ok visit, with good customer service.

This was my first and last visit to this location. The restaurant is easy to find with clear signage. Inside was very clean. I was with a group for a birthday dinner. I ordered the broiled seafood platter with tater tots and mashed potatoes. When the food came out it appeared everything had been brought out so I let the waitress know I didn't have my tater tots and received a snappy response that she was getting them. I wasn't advised of that when my plate was set in front of me so didn't think she knew. As I looked at my shrimp I noticed it wasn't cleaned and some of my scallops appeared to be cut in half. The mashed potatoes came with gravy which wasn't noted on the menu. I asked to replace the entire platter with the fried platter and that I was willing to still pay the higher price. The manager advise she can't just take it off. She was willing to replace the shrimp since she can see what I was stating and bring more scallops but that's it. The explanation for the scallops was that they weigh them out. That doesn't explain why they liked mangled. So my food sat waiting for tater tots then even longer for replacement items so it was cold. This was a disappointing first experience that I feel could've been handled better. The fried shrimp is fantastic - highly recommend! As you can't see in the pictures the replacement scallops look as I would expect vs what was on the platter.

I have been a loyal customer of Surf Riders from when they first was on Newtown Roads. I have ate at all their locations so this one being closer to me is a win-win!! Since the location is new, the restaurant is newer in terms of table, seatings but the look-decor is still their signature look. If you know, then you know. Still great food and great service.

Today is the first day that that Surf Rider Kempsville was open, and it did not disappoint. There is no sign on the outside of the restaurant yet, which was kinda funny, cause we felt like we were going into a secret restaurant that nobody knows about. But they opened May 4th (may the 4th be with them), and I have watched as they have been renovating the restaurant. Some friends and I decided to check it out for supper, and once we walked in we were greeted and seated in a booth. The inside has a nice bar area, and then a regular seating area. There were a lot of guests there eating already, so I'd say it was pretty full on a Thursday evening. Our waitress (Onalise I'm not sure of the spelling, I just remember she said it starts with an O) was our server and she was just great! Really enjoyed her company and her humor! There is a laminated drink menu as well as a separate laminated food menu. My friend ordered a dirty martini and the rest of us ordered the 32oz crush bucket ($15). There are 4 flavors and we tried them all, blood orange, caribbean, texas grapefruit, and regular orange. They were all good but the blood orange was probably my favorite. The martini was nice and strong as it should be. After looking over the menu which is one page back and forth, we decided on calamari, a couple soft shell crab sandwiches, a seared tuna dinner, a crab cake sandwich, a burger with half a crab cake, and tots, fries, onions rings, and a baked potato. The calamari was fantastic! Light and crisp, and so tender, not a hint of chewiness. Served with a chunky marinara sauce it was a perfect starter and cannot wait to eat it again when I come back. The crab cake sandwich was served with pickle, tomato, and lettuce, and was just full of lump crab, and the crab cake burger was a nice medium rare burger with a half sized lump crab cake ball perched on top also served with lettuce, tomato, and pickle slices. The soft shell crab sandwich was served with lettuce, tomato, and lettuce as well, and I added Mayo and some of the marinara sauce to it and it was crispy, plump, full of crab, and delicious. The tuna was well done and she asked for it to be rare, so it was corrected and the flavor of it was really savory, and tender. Overall, we had such a great experience there for supper, and for it to only have been open for a few hours, they were doing great. The steamers weren't working yet, so no steamed food can be ordered yet, only broiled or fried food for now but I'm sure it will be up and working asap! I cannot wait to come back for delicious drinks and seafood!!!

The kempsville location does not compare to the original locations- I have ordered the flounder twice and both times the fish was overcooked the broccoli was also overcooked, for the price point it's a disappointment
