Guys & gals over at Freshfit took this over and couldn't be happier. Admittedly sugar shack is way better than its sister restaurant (may as well be two different places) , food is fresh & what you come to expect from the outer banks. Order at the counter & to find your table, look at the bay & enjoy the view. Don't expect fine dining, this is either a grab and go or a sit & enjoy. You won't be disappointed unless you have unrealistic expectations.

Love the views, service is good. We ordered 4lbs of steamed Alaskan snow crabs. They were $28 a lb! At home in md we can get them for about $15! I wish they would put some apple cider vinegar in their pot though when they cook them. It really helps balance out the fishy taste. They also mixed in some king crablegs in our meal which I didn't care for considering I don't like them nor did I pay for those.

The food was good but the prices in relation to what you're actually served...aren't proportionate at all.

Came here one day for lunch in between beach time. They offer both inside and outside seating. It was a little windy that day so I sat inside. I ordered a platter of shrimp and hush puppies. It came with coleslaw and kettle chips made in house. I also ordered a side of hush puppies. Very good and fresh!

So good. After years of eating at a variety of restaurants my friend and I tried Sugar Shack out for the first time. We both ordered the tuna steak sandwich. I got it with fries. My friend had the okra. Both were good. The steak was huge! I tried the she crab soup which was good. The best part was the service. So attentive and friendly. Can't wait to return. I even brought home a pound of tuna steak. It was so drag.

This place isn't fancy, you seat yourself and order at the counter. But, the food is great. If you want delicious seafood without paying insane prices, this is your place. We will be back. We had the grilled mahi, ahi and crab cakes. The clam chowder was a Smokey kind I had never tasted before but it was delicious.

My mom needed a break from my dad so I took her for a ride up the island just, to get her out of the house. I'd been to Sugar Shack in the past and thought she'd enjoy lunch there. Unfortunately, her first impression was really bad. She is quite disabled and uses a walker. The handicap parking spaces weren't really paved, I'm not quite sure how to describe it but it was kind of a honeycomb of concrete with the holes filled with sand. Getting her walker over it was nearly impossible, though somehow, we managed. I had to pull out and pick her up in the center of the parking lot on our way out. Also, the handicapped ramp was rather steep and was difficult for her to get up. While significant, I'm glad to say that this was the only glitch during our visit. The indoor seating area is small but there is plenty of room outside on picnic tables. You order at the counter - the menu is on a chalkboard but they also have printed menus if you'd like. We were told the fish of the day then given a couple of minutes to decide. I opted for the shrimp and flounder with okra and my mom stuck with just the flounder with fries. Both of us were thrilled with our meals. My mom's meal had two pretty good size filets, a giant pile of fries and some slaw. The fish was fried up perfectly and the fries were different in a really good way - I'm not sure if you'd call them battered or what, but they were soooo crispy and absolutely delicious. The slaw was fresh and crispy and a nice complement to the meal. My meal came with one filet and a good portion of nice size shrimp. They also were just right. The okra was fried crisp - no hint of sliminess that you sometimes get with okra. Next time though, I was going to be sure to order those wonderful fries. We finished our lunch and continued on with mom's break from dad. But, that's not the end of my Sugar Shack story. The next day, I had to leave my beloved Hatteras and head back home. I was all packed up and I planned on grabbing lunch on my way off the island. I was driving right past Sugar Shack so my lunch stop was a no brainer. This time i ordered a shrimp plate. I can't tell you how many shrimp there were - I was going to count them for you but I was eating while driving so thought it better to just let that pass. The shrimp were awesome, they really were. And this time, I did get those extra crispy strips of potato we call fries. Everything was delicious. I hated leaving my family, I hated leaving Hatteras, but at least I did have a good send off. Hatteras Island is my "happy place". I think Sugar Shack may just become my "happy restaurant".

Our waitress, Savannah, was wonderful. She was kind and attentive. The food was phenomenal. Highly recommend the salmon with risotto. HOWEVER, the ladies that do the seating need to be more conscious of where and how they seat people. We were a group of 7 and got squished into a 6-top table. I did ask if they had a better table for 7 was told no. As a I was sitting on one of the ends of the table my chair was CONSTANTLY being bumped from the back by not only the customers sitting at the table behind me but also by waitresses trying to SQUEEZE by with plates full of food.

Beautiful view of the sound. You order at counter on your way in. The she crab soup was served in styrofoam bowl. I love she crab soup but this had a fishy taste. Drinks served in plastic cups. Food is served on styrofoam plates. The coconut shrimp was very good and the serving was large. The cole slaw was probably the most tasty thing I had. The beet salad was shredded beets and apples. Couldn't taste the apples but something else was with the beets. I love beets but didn't care for this. Found it a contradiction that there were signs everywhere re: protecting marine life but food was served in styrofoam with plastic cups and utensils.
