Delicious sandwiches and very cool environment. We ate on the deck where the wind was blowing across the boats in the marina.I adored our sandwiches. Wife and I split the Cuban and a pastrami sandwiches. I can't say which I liked more. So good. The pickle on the side was snappy and salty. Son had a BLT which he scarfed down.During our entire stay on OBX, this was our favorite. It is just across the bridge from festival island, so it was ideal for visiting for lunch before or after a trip there.

We had a good experience at Poor Richard's on our first visit. We had a nice gift card to burn so ordered our meals and some additional sandwiches for carryout to have for dinner. The soup of the day was New England Clam Chowder. It was served piping hot and was very good. So many places over-thicken chowder with flour and make it pasty. This was not that way; it was creamy and delicious.I had planned to get their daily special sandwich of Grilled Pastrami with Cheese. I talked myself out of that when I saw they serve Boar's Head meats. (more on that later) We both ordered The Angry Burger from the specialty sandwich menu, and these were also very good. They were half pound and were served with a generous dollop of homemade pimento cheese, bacon and pickled chiles Jalapeños. The beef had a good flavor, maybe needing a pinch of salt, but all-in-all this was excellent. We each took half home, since we are past the stage of eating half-pounders. We both had potato salad for our side. We were glad we had the good chowder because the potato salad is not something I would order again. The potato chunks were way too large, the potato was mealy, and the dressing was bland and tasteless. All it takes to improve this is to cut the potatoes smaller and dress them with vinegar while still warm, then add your mayo dressing. Thankfully it was not loaded with onion. For our carryout we ordered from the cold menu; one ham and one turkey breast. These seemed overpriced for what they were. There was less than 4 oz of meat on each. $12 for a lunchmeat sandwich is a bit much. I am not a fan of Boar's Head. It is ubiquitous and not particularly good. For items like the ham and turkey it is okay, but I know from experience that the pastrami and corned beef are not delicatessen grade. They have tried to be all things, have driven the smaller producers of good grade meats out of the market, and are producing mass quantities of mediocre products. I can show you a gas station that features their meats. So, I was disappointed to find them at Poor Richard's.I heartily recommend Poor Richard's but advise sticking with the specialty menu to avoid the Boar's Head stuff. If you like Boar's Head products, just go to any market that sells them and make a much less expensive sandwich at home.

Stopped in here to check out "Poor Rudolfs" for the holiday season. This place is extremely small. They had live music going on, but it was honestly too much for such a small place. I think someone with a guitar would be fine, but they had a whole drum set up. The food was okay. I got the Cali wrap, but it was all meat. It needed lettuce or something. The sausage balls weren't good. The service was fine. Overall, I'd say 3.5 stars? Not my favorite.

We arrived at 12pm and the line was out the door. It took roughly 15-20 minutes to get to the front and right as we did we saw a sign that said they ran out of fries and onion rings. Not ideal at all since we were with a 4 year old. After we placed our order we noticed several of the sodas from the soda fountain were also all out. I'm not sure if we arrived after the lunch rush or if they just didn't anticipate so many people on a rainy day. I ended up ordering the pastrami and cheese sandwich which was a 5/5 but the side of chips were just alright. My wife ordered the tuna salad sandwich and really enjoyed it too. Her side of potato salad was much more enjoyable. Since the restaurant was so crowded we ended up eating outside under the covered patio. The tables and chairs were soaked so it took us a full roll of paper towels to get everything dry. It's interesting that they keep these seats open all year round but no patio heaters are present. All in all the food is here is great but the logistics leave much to be desired.

The restaurant has a great coastal dive feel. It was decorated festively for the holiday season. The food was delicious. We had the Grilled Pimento Cheese on White Bread, the Rockfish Wrap, the Greek Wrap, and the Heart Attack wrap. The fries were fresh and crispy. They also have a tasty vinegar based Carolina barbecue sauce. The food was so good we got distracted and forgot to take pictures. The food came out quickly and the employees were nice. You order your food at the counter and drinks are self-served. You pick your own table and they had both indoor and outdoor seating. Overall, we will definitely return and highly recommend.

Food is excellent, eat outside. It's my favorite sandwich shop in Manteo. A part of our history, there are lines drawn inside for how high it flooded in each hurricane

Little, quaint downtown Manteo is soooooo charming - but not a lot of low cost dining options available (non full service places) so you're pretty well captive to what seemed to us like slim pickin's. Poor Richard's was centrally located on the strip, an order at the counter joint which was perfect for us to just grab a sandwich and rest our feet. I know this place has been around for yearrrrrrrrs so there is something to be said for "tried and true." There was another deli whose shingle sign we saw down another side street but when we asked a merchant which one they would recommend, she said Poor Richard's. Bottom line, Poor Richard's was "just okay." Nothing wrong or offensive with it, just really nothing amazing or spectacular. Just. Okay. lol. Thumbs Ups:* Decent prices for what you get...I guess... $30 for 2 people - 2 sandwiches and 1 fountain drink - you be the judge. I guess anymore these days, that's considered a good deal...* Decent menu with something for everyone - hot / grilled and cold sandwiches, classics, specialty sandwiches, burgers, fries (ask for them crispy!), soup du jour, chili, small selection of salads. Definitely something for everyone. * Order at the counter, sit down and they'll bring your order to your table. So you save on having to tip!* Friendly service - it's obvious the workers have been there for a while - they're experienced and speedy. They have a decent number of workers back in the sandwich making area so orders come out without an inordinate wait. * Food is for sure fresh and made to order - they seem to do a brisk business which does speak to their popularity but also it probably means their ingredients turn often - the sandwiches we had were fresh tasting, chips were crisp and portion sizes were decent.Thumbs Downs:* Super tiny seating area inside - they do pack in a few tables and booth seating on both sides - but this is NOT a good option for dine in for larger parties (like over 4 or 5 people) - tip: if the weather is nice, get your order to go and walk across the street to the public pavilion area or head over the bridge to Festival Park (walkable). There are also tables on Poor Richard's also-small back deck overlooking the water but it can get windy and chilly out there. * Not handicap or mobility-challenged friendly at all. * No kids menu * Ordered the chicken salad as a wrap. Disappointed. If you're a chix salad fanatic like I am, would not recommend theirs. VERY BLAND.* When it gets busy, you'll end up bussing your own dirty table - wish they would be more attentive to quickly clear vacated tables so customers don't have to. Not a show stopper but slightly annoying.I mean, 3 STARS for a just-average dining experience including the food we ordered. When I come back to visit Manteo next, I would opt to try some place different. Like I said, Poor Richard's is not a bad place, just ho-hum and really nothing to write home about.

This was a great sandwich shop! My family was out Christmas shopping when we found Poor Richards. We were looking at the board out front when a passerby stopped and told us to definitely eat there. We were sold. There's a menu board right inside where you wait in line (if there is one, there was for us) and choose what you'd like. You order and pay at the register, and then seat yourself. They call your number on your ticket when your food is ready. I got the crab cake sandwich which was a 10/10. Really great. The crab was lump and it wasn't all filling, which happens sometimes with crab cakes. I finished most of my sandwich, but it was a pretty big portion. I also had the cucumber salad which was really good. I could've eaten more if I had room! Everyone else liked their order, too. No complaints at my table. We'd definitely return when we're in the area!
