Most of the reviews were from many years ago. My husband and I go to the gym almost daily. Everyone who works there is wonderful. Some machines have been broken for a while but I am sure they will fix them. Maybe I shouldn't give a good review then some will stay away

Review is based on using the Y for the fitness center only. While on vacation, it was great to find the Y offers a weekly vacay pass. It's a tremendous value for anyone that wants to stay on track with their gym workouts. The weight room has basic dumbells, cable machines, a few benches and cardio equipment such as a row machine, stair climber, multiple ellipticals and treadmills.

This is our family YMCA when visiting the OBX. We have used it for over 7 years. In that time nothing has virtually changed which is a tip off as to the A-OK rating. Located at MM 11 in Nags Nead off the highway. Signage is good, but just like anything else along the highway you need to know a mile marker or you will zip by at 55 mph. The parking lot has always been spacious enough for our family. The lot and walks always tidy. Outdoor lighting is good. The primary reason of use is the pool. They do have workout rooms and a gym along with Y programming. The front desk staff has always been helpful and friendly. I will go on record now to say that I don't think I have ever been to a Y with the staff has not been friendly and helpful. The lobby has on many occasions been pretty rough with regard to cleanliness. Unfortunately swimmers in wet suits sit on the chairs and a lot of wear occurs. Also the chlorine and moisture create a foul smell. This is typical of every Y I have ever gone to. The furniture needs replaced annually, but never is. The five lane pool with hot tub and lockers is located in the front of the building. It's a 25 meter pool. The OBX swim team operated from here for years, but recently disbanded. The Y picked up swim programming in its absence. However, at this time there is not a competitive team. I will continue to use this YMCA and hope that they decide on an investment with upgrading furniture and equipment. This is not your typical Y you would find in Hampton Roads and I don't mean that in a good way.

Recent change in Director has increased my opinion greatly. The new director (I think his name is Todd) is very hands on. I see him often in all areas doing many different jobs. Any safety concern is immediately addressed. Supplies especially for water sports have increased. Lifeguard coverage has improved, and they keep careful watch on kids, even those whose parents have their eyes glued to a phone instead of their own kids. During a recent thunder storm they had everyone exit the water, and two parents actually argued with the lifeguards. Really parents? It's no fun to do CPR on a kid.If I had one wish, I wish the outdoor pool could stay open in September as it's really warm in OBX then. So thankful for this great, fun , safe place to work out.

Visiting from PA & went to workout at Nags Head facility. Very small cramped workout space. Returned another day & told we'd have pay $10 each because summer months and out of state. Front desk lady rude! She would benefit from customer service training class! We have a family membership and did NOT expect to be have to pay a fee to exercise on our vacation!Shelly PeterHanover PA

Todd abs his staff are super friendly. I had an incident at the y due to nothing but me not paying attention and they went above and beyond to help me. I see Todd all over the gym nearly every time I am there. Staff is friendly and with new renovations the gym is going to be clean and super nice!

Condo came with a guest membership while vacationing in OBX. There was a surf advisory while we were in town due to an off shore tropical storm, plus my kids are little and they can't really "swim" in the ocean yet. They have a good sized outdoor pool with a shallow splash area. Separate entrance and parking from the rest of the Y with special needs and infant parking! Wasn't overcrowded at all in mid-July and staff was very friendly. We did not check out the indoor amenities.

Staff first accused my young niece of wearing a "sketchy" swim necklace (she EARNED this necklace by passing her swim test at the Y, she's been swimming since she was 4 years old); she was next accused of using her older sister's swim necklace. Neither accusation was true. Staff member NEVER spoke to either of my niece's parents, both of whom were present, choosing instead to humiliate a little girl to tears. Our family - visiting for Father's Day (!) - decided to leave because the staff was atrocious. Unforgivable. If I could give this place negative-stars, I would; it doesn't deserve the one star needed to post "not good".

I have been so impressed with the lifeguards at the outdoor pool this summer. They are so professional, on top of things and still dealing so well with the children. From pool tests (can use the deep end) to encouraging the children to follow rules to keep them safe, the life guards are just phenomenal!

Was ok. A few of the items, like the cable rope triceps extension needs to be re-tightened. 195 pounds feels too easy compared to the gym I go to now.
