So this review is of the campground. We went here with our new travel trailer. This was our very first visit. As a newbie, you always get scared of a few things. Delving into the unknown of what you have, etc. However, the win with this place was that it was local, there were still plenty of places around within a 15 minute drive, and the staff were practically always available (seriously - I haven't called and someone not pickup to help me). The amenities at the site were solid. Yes - it was a communal dumping station but that's just how it is for some places. To be fair, this was perfect for us because we came in December (not exactly busy) and we needed the low pressure for us to be able to make mistakes, adjust, etc. We definitely had a great time overall. So much so that we'll be coming back here in 3 weeks. It's just a nice, simple area that is well done.Food Taste: n/aOverall Service: 5Value of product to cost: 5Facility: 5Repeat customer: yesDog Friendly: yes

This is a great park. It feels like a state park honestly. There are miles of trails, lots of public facilities, campgrounds, playgrounds, water recreation, and a nice educational center that is always running nature informational programs on the weekends. It is a wonderful resource to have access to for no charge!

Great place for a variety of activities. I woke up extra early to fish one morning and managed to catch a nice size bass. This state park was roughly 6 min from our Airbnb so I had to take advantage. Free parking, ample bathrooms, trails, and a nature center are some of the highlights of the Newport News State Park. There is a playground for the little ones and it looks like they use paddle boats in the summer months that's always a nice perk. They are currently repairing a few of the boat decks which is also reassuring. The park itself is huge...also very clean so please be sure to take your trash with you.

I came here strictly for the holiday lights. We were not disappointed!! I'm a Southside girl and making a trek to the Peninsula was not top on my list, that was until we were on a mission to see spectacular lights. Let's face it, as much as it pains me to admit, I've learned that Newport News has way better Christmas lights in Hampton Roads. But town center in VB has pretty cool life size snow globes and Norfolk now has the very cool lights on the USS Wisconsin, which I highly recommend. Celebration of lights is really good! There's no dead space in between the various lights and animated lights are mixed in and you don't have the radio station interrupted with ads during the music that you set it to. The lights have a lot of variety and are fun and playful. Most of all the price point is reasonable! There was a long line to get in, which are drive thru lights, but the line moves quickly. It starts out as two lines to get in but merged into one. If I had to rate the drive thru lights Newport News' Celebration of Lights wins hands down, then Norfolk Botanical Gardens ( which I used to like but I feel it's not as good anymore and way more expensive than previous years) and flat last- Va Beach oceanfront's lights just haven't wowed me. Our family had a great time enjoying the lights! You should too!

Very relaxing place, I love renting the water boats and just let the waves take me. Enjoy the sunshine and relax. There's plenty of other things to do but I personally enjoy the water boat experience.

An absolute gem of a park, probably the only thing that Newport News gets right! The campground is absolutely wonderful and the price is one of the best ones on the peninsula, and it's way cheaper than any other lodging on the peninsula as well! Well maintained and all the amenities that you could want to have! Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

Great campground! Reason for four stars? With 188 campsites, and no sewer hook-ups, there should be more bathroom facilities throughout the park. The sites are fairly level, and in the site we were in, C87, we felt we had a good bit of privacy. The employees at both the camp store and the Discovery Center at the main park are quite pleasant and knowledgeable. We enjoyed walking the trails in the park. If the weather had cooperated and we had more time to spend here, we would've taken advantage of the other activities the park has to offer - Archery, disc golf and boating, and much more. We will definitely be back again.

Stay has been poor to say the least. First off this is not our first stay but by far the worst so far the upkeep of the park has gone downhill to say the least. All camping roads and trails need to be repaved and sites need to be fixed as they are uneven cracked a d have roots pushing though. Bathrooms and eh not the worst I have seen but by far not super clean. The biggest issue is the customer service, stopped in to get a second pass for my other vehicle and the employee locked the door and smiled at me. Yeah definitely don't recommend coming here when the kids don't care. Better off finding a different campground that has better service and a better kept park. Not to mention less cocky power hungry rangers.
