This place is typical Filipino turo-turo restaurant with seating available for dine in. There's always a line here and the reason is that the customers are allowed to take their good old time to decide and then chit chat (tsismis time!) with the server/cashier. Today they lost 4 customers in line behind me because of the wait! You can choose small, medium or large containers or entree items, not clear if rice is an extra item (unlike other places where you pick rice or pancit with your entrees). I chose beef steak and sinigang (vegetable with pork sour soup). The beef steak was super salty. The sinigang only had a couple of pieces of pork. The turon (fried bananas) are good.

The most authentic Filipino food on the east coast. I took a trip to the Philippines and I didn't have to leave Norfolk. I hardly get to eat Filipino food and I was very satisfied with the service, quality of food and the atmosphere. Well done!

Dropped by to get dessert. The sweet crispy on the outside and soft sweet banana on the inside is really good, we call this Turon. The ginataan reminds me of back home .Made with glutinous soft chewy rice balls, sweet potatoes and tapioca pearls and plantain that is cooked in sweet coconut milk with the right sweetness. Kids approved and loved it. Must try!

I've tried several Filipino eats in the area and Maymar has been BY FAR the most delicious. The owner is so kind and inviting, she really makes you feel welcome. Plan to go early for the best selection, or call in your order ahead of time. There are tables to sit at inside, the usual, basic, set up for a small mom & pop place. Most folks were taking their orders to go, as did I, and my order was packaged nicely with care.

I've only been to the Chesapeake location of Maymar and since I am already around the area, I agreed to a lunch with my coworkers at this location. When it comes to Filipino foods in Hampton Roads, Maymar is in the bottom of the list. I heard raving reviews about this location and how it is better than all the other Maymar so I finally decided to try it. The first thing I noticed was how busy this location is. There was a long line when we first got in and it takes a while before we get our orders. The restaurant was clean and bright. The staff were courteous and helpful. I ordered the Pancit Palabok, Fried Daing (Fried and Butterflied Milkfish, and Kare-Kare (beef stewed in peanut butter) . I was surprised that they put tripe on their Kare-Kare. I already got excited and when I tried it, I was impressed. Their Fried Daing was breaded, but it wasn't too crispy. As for the Palabok, I really enjoyed the taste. Maymar might not be my favorite Filipino restaurant, but it is definitely worth a try. I highly recommend it for Filipino food lovers or for people who wants to try Filipino cuisine.

I've been to the other location in Chesapeake a handful of times which is a more modern feel but this is a classic turo turo filipino restaurant. I got their bicol express and it was delightfully spicy. Their longanisa was a bit mushy on the inside which made me wonder if I just got the last bit that had been sitting for a little but it was still good. The only other downside was they only take cash which I luckily had on me (and there's an atm within walking distance) at the time. Pretty good from what I've tried so far, will be coming back to try more of their dishes.

Great stuff! It's definitely home cooked meals! Go for pancit instead of rice. Idk it was in the back. But I've always been more of a noodle guy. No dine in right now, but at least they take card!

I happened to stop in wanting something quick to eat on the way to an appointment. I passed by this restaurant and made a U-turn so that I could eat while in transit. When I arrived I asked what their smallest order of lumpia would be. The lady behind the counter kept telling me about 12 and I remember pointing out to her on numerous occasions that I wasn't going home and didn't want the food to sit in my vehicle so I needed the small order and I planned to return in the future for more items off the menu. She explained that someone ordered this and never came back for it. She opened the box and showed me the lumpia and I repeated that I wouldn't be going home but she sold it hard so I took the order. When I got in my vehicle I ate one and it was no longer warm, almost cold and greasy. I think that's why the flavor wasn't there. I was glad I asked for an extra duck sauce for flavor but it wasn't flavorful either. She'd made a point of telling me that they had pancit and wanted me to purchase that as well. I could tell that she figured I was one of the people what only knew about lumpia and pancit. (smile) I'm actually very familiar with Filipino cuisine and love several other dishes but I just opted out and repeated that I'd return when time permits. I should've gone back into the restaurant and complained that the food was cold but I was running late. I can't recommend this place yet but I know they've been around for decades at other locations as well so I'll try something else next time. They had a few other items out (already prepared...buffet style) and other customers came in and showed immediate interest. I didn't have time to pay attention to the selection...another reason that I plan to give this restaurant another chance.

I had an unpleasant interaction with the Filipino lady taking orders on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at 12:10 pm. There were only 3 customers in the restaurant at the time and she was rushing me to make an order. I felt pressured and ordered a small pancit. As she was loading the pancit in the tray I saw the lumpia and requested 4 lumpia as well. She rolled her eyes and threw the small tray on the table, picked up a larger tray, and started loaded the tray with my food. I was disgusted at her unprofessionalism and bad attitude. The neighborhood is shady, to begin with, and it appears 95% of the customers are African-American as I've been there many times in the last 2 years. My point is since there's a certain demographic supporting your business DO NOT treat them like crap. I will not go there any more.
