Los Portales - Burgess

One of the newest restaurants to open in Burgess. There's already a Mexican restaurant so I was really hoping for a different cuisine. Anyways, we end up trying their food and drinks. As we entered, we were greeted by our host with a smile. 5/5 for the reception. Ambiance looked great and fresh interiors with comfortable seating. 5/5 for ambiance as well. Menu has almost everything you see in a typical Mexican restaurant. I was looking for one thing I have not had in any other Mexican place. So I chose the sautéed shrimp, scallops and chicken served in half cut pineapple. For drinks we ordered classic lime margaritas. Service was great! They also have free chips and salsa. Do get their spicy salsa. It's pretty good. Well, I wasn't very impressed by the entree. Scallops tasted fishy. Chicken was dry and overcooked. Unfortunately, 4/5 for the food for me. It lacked the flavor I was hoping I would get from sautéed food. I just hope it's a one thing. Definitely like to try it again when I am in the area. The place gets packed. We drove by this place a couple of times in the evenings around 6 pm. Hardly any space to park your car. I guess people love the traditional dishes they offer. I might try the fajita next time.

Ice cold margaritas and piping hot delicious Mexican food! It sounds simple, but not every restaurant in the area can accomplish that simple combination. Was a big fan of Los Patrones just a couple blocks away, but they lost my business after several visits following their change of ownership. Los Portales is the new kid on the block and they are doing everything right. The menu looks the same as their Callao location - and it helps that they've borrowed some seasoned staff from Callao as well to help get the new location established. Everything is just better here - from service to drinks to their food.

What a surprise gathering place in Burgess, VA, of all places.Wonderful food, large booths and friendly staff.We even get take-out sometimes and it is just as good as the sit down. Even give you a bag of chips and salsa with the take out.Recommend.

I will never return to this restaurant again! I came in with my family to eat and the hostess Maria was very rude. When we asked how long the wait time would be, she responded, "i don't know" instead of giving us an estimated wait time. Also, a group that had the same number of people as our group came into the restaurant 10 minutes after us and she sat them before us and said to us "you can wait or you can leave" We left feeling very disrespected and discriminated against! Very, VERY rude. Me and my family will not be returning there and will make sure everyone knows what our experience was there. Unacceptable!

10/10 frozen margarita. Huge portions on all dishes for reasonable prices. Will go again

Los Portales opened this year in Burgess, Virginia. A little town on a long spit of land known as the Northern Neck, sandwiched between the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers, a land that time seems to have forgotten. And that is Northern Neck's charm. The people are pleasant, and most restaurants reflect the bounty provided by the Chesapeake Bay. That's what sets Los Portales apart. Quality Mexican food here seems exotic as there are few ethnic eateries outside of Kilmarnock many miles away. Los Portales has incorporated seafood on the menu along with go-to favorites. The staff are friendly, the prices are reasonable, and the margarita pitcher selection over the top. The parking lot is always filled on weekends, but the wait is short and there are plenty of bar seats. Highly recommend for all.

Food wasn't heated all the way through throughly. Like it was microwaved. It had hot spots. I liked the sweet tea. The chips were good but not salted. The salsa was ok. It wasn't very busy, tables about half full and yet they were slow to refill drinks and food came out slowly. One person didn't get their food until about 5 min after everyone else. Awkward. Don't know if I'd return or not.

We have eaten here half a dozen times and loved the service as much as the food. However we went last week and had 2 issues. I love the Del Mar mixed seafood meal. It was completely lacking and scallops??? They were the best. I was waiting to tell waitress but she never returned. So we finished eating quite disappointed. We they waited over 15 minutes....still no waitress! I called another waitress over to get them to find her. She returned to tell us our waitress left and failed to line us up with another server...she didn't even tell us! We paid the bill and left good tip for the server that finally helped us because she was so apologetic. I send an email to them telling them about the bad service and requesting they contact us about it. I have been totally ignored for a week so just thought I'd pass it on to Yelp. We live close but will consider not returning due to this treatment. Hope others get better service. If not there is always Rancho Viejo Bar & Gril nearby. Not as nice a looking place but good food and service. Good luck! If I ever hear from Los Portales in Burgess, I will update my review.
